EDIT: I've quickly realised playing about with simple circuits is actually quite addictive! What starts out as a little, cheap hobby soon becomes a huge, expensive past time... More components... rarer components.. bigger circuits... more components...
This I can relate to! Proto rig looks ace, nice one!
Having had a TU-2 and now a Pitchblack, my problem with the Polytune is that it feels... cheap. Doesn't feel bombproof like the other two. I really dislike that cheap, easily scratched plastic they use for the screen, as opposed to the sturdy thick glass or whatever it is the other two use. And, I also prefer the Pitchblack's display. And poly (on the big version) seemed unreliable on bass for me, thinking sometimes I was on a 5-stringer when there were only 4 strings. It is faster though, I'll give it that.
Funny you should say that, our old guitarist had a Pitchblack and I was thinking about shifting my TU-2 in favour of one of those, but I just felt like I'd break it, it didn't feel very sturdy to me at all. The Boss is bombproof though so maybe not a completely fair comparison. Used a Polytune Mini and found it very nice indeed, easy to use and it tells you what note you're playing, but there's just no need for me to trade the Boss in at the minute.
It is a Bass Fuss. Would you put a blend before or after the cap?
Cap blend? Check THIS LINK and you want the Deluxe version just above the Buzz Box. Simply place another cap and a pot wired as a variable resistor in parallel with the input cap. Keep the caps at least 1:100 ratio apart from each other (the values on there are decent starting points) with the larger cap in series with the pot
Recently decided to have a go at making pedals from scratch. Finished prototyping a simple fuzz pedal the other day. Finally got a chance to see if it works. It does and I like it. (the biro is my DIY audio probe) Recorded a quick sample. http://soundcloud.co...erette/fuzztest First part has LED clipping, send bit is a 1N4148. Next stage is to add a blend section and a switch for the clipping selection, then get a board to solder it on to.
Bazz Fuss? Input cap blend is a nice one on this, I found I didn't need a clean blend once that was on there, worth a look if you've got it on the breadboard!
I've been mulling over an idea... Like quite a few folk here I really like the sound of my Ashdown hyperdrive, but not its size. Had looked at cloning it, but having traced out most of the circuit it seems overly complicated to me. So my thoughts turned to a work alike design. Blend/bp filter/distortion. Then my mind wandered a bit further. Why blend the distorted bandpass signal back with a totally clean signal? Why not add a nice warm valve-sounding drive option instead, like the sft I've just built but with a mid control too. Also thinking of a DI out. All in a Hammond 1590BB. Any thoughts?
Do it. DI may be overkill unless your rig needs it, and if not I'd probably leave it out. The older Ashdown pedals are deceptively sized! Once you've got anything bigger than pancake jacks on the side of a 1590B it isn't much smaller than the Ashdown. I'm starting to favour portrait 1590BB boxes with all jacks north-mounted.
This can be an issue, but a lot of the time it isn't. Most speakers can't reproduce those frequencies anyway, and those that can will only produce a very small amount of them. What you're hearing is harmonics sometimes a couple of octaves higher. You'll find that you'll be able to turn the amp up louder without hitting its limits, and saving the speakers!
^This^ Great product. Only bit of sound processing on my board built by someone else! You don't notice it until it's gone. If you get chance to try one out then I'd recommend it. If anyone wants a loan of mine they're more than welcome!

Do distance selling regulations apply to used gear?
TG Flatline replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
All sorted, NKRV/Rick dealt with it all very professionally C
Glad to hear that! -
The meatball clone still didn't work due to my inability to tell anode from cathode - had the LDRs installed backwards! Hoping to make some "bow-chicka-wow-wow" and "wiki-wiki-wah" noises with it tonight though...
Octave and fuzz in the effects loop for a winning good time!
Hey guys, Not normally a lurker on the effects side of the forum but I've been adding pedals to my gear list recently and I fancy having a go at building some DIY stuff. My first foray into pedal building was a Woolly Mammoth clone which wasn't my cup of tea really. I've currently got (in order) a Bass Big Muff Pi, Boss CEB-3, into a SansAmp Paradriver. What I'm looking for is a small overdrive to sit at the front of the chain to bump up the level into the Muff, as I have found that OD into fuzz works much better than fuzz into OD. Ditched my ODB-3 as that was waaay too 'fizzy', if you understand what I mean by that. The Paradriver is there for DI and tone shaping with just the merest hint of drive going on. So, I'm looking for a schematic for a one-knob OD that is bass-friendly and will fit into a Hammond 1590A enclosure (yep, the really tiny micro pedal-sized one ). I have heard good things about the Earthquaker Devices Speaker Cranker and would like to emulate something like that on bass, but smaller too..... Just wondering if I've bitten off more than I can chew? Ta muchly, Bottle
HAO Rust Ride, minimal Screamer (remove the buffers) with set gain and no tone control - they both spring to mind, though you may want to reduce the gain on the HAO. If it's just for boosting a Muff, try a simple LPB-1 circuit rather than an OD. This is essentially what the Blackout Effectors Musket is. SHO isn't a bad call either, but you may find it overly brightens the muff afterwards.

Ace board dude!!! Compressor always on?

I think "assembly" is something that can be confused for being "made" in Britain, and is a bit of a grey area! Depends on your definition really, I'd imagine there would be some variance among us. Nicest cab I've ever heard in the flesh was a Barefaced Big Twin. Absolutely unreal. I don't have the monies but that would be the only thing that would shift me from my BFM cabs.
Dunno yet. I'll be building it stock and then take it from there. What are the best mods? I'd reckon changing the input cap to let more bottom through is pretty much a moot point. It's probably best left as stock methinks...
Adding a filter on the octave (like the Aguilar) is a sub of two resistors for a dual-gang pot and gives a nice variety of tones. I wouldn't change the input cap, but by all means experiment with a socket! You using the Boss bypass or another option?
Buoyed by my recent successes in making and modding pedals I placed a big order with doctortweek.co.uk last night and will be attempting an OC2, using the same old school chips, diodes and transistors. That should make for an interesting week...
Grand! You adding any mods or building it stock?
I'm all about simplicity. Just ask Shep!
Room for two of those boards on even the tightest of stages
-
External power supply is a winner. Diago and GigRig would be the best places to start IMO. If certain effects need battery power then again GigRig have you covered. I am slightly biased though as I stopped using batteries a long time ago in favour of power supplies. Simpler to set up and maintain your board.

Do distance selling regulations apply to used gear?
TG Flatline replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
All the above. DSR protects consumers who have not had a chance to fully inspect the goods and to satisfy themselves that they fully meet their requirements, unlike when you can handle and test the goods when buying in a shop. Don't let it drop and don't let them bully you. Write clear letters/emails in a manner that can be used as evidence in court (if it ever comes to that) and keep all copies. If you choose to name and shame, be careful to stick to verifiable facts.
Excellent post, I would go by that to the letter! Fingers crossed for you bud! -
Sold Ian a CE-2B clone a little over a year ago. Zero hassle and a good bloke!

Point them in the direction of that to start with. Companies can and do have returns policies, but they must also comply with Distance Selling Regs. Good luck with it, let us know how you get on! -
little change to the PT mini... room for one more, but so far this is working very nicely
Nice. Excellent choice of dirt!

I agree, they don't sound great. I had hoped for more honestly. Chance for them to get smaller, more pedalboard-friendly boxes and that sound great, but it's not happened. The knobs are too close to the footswitch and they just don't cut it sound-wise to me. Shame.

LED side Fret Markers for dark stages .....??
TG Flatline replied to Mark_ii's topic in General Discussion
I've got side LEDs on my Shuker. Worth every penny to me. Particularly useful when there is someone with an itchy trigger finger controlling the smoke machine. I generally turned them off outside as they didn't really make a difference. I chose white so they would just look like brighter fret markers, and unless you're looking at them straight on you wouldn't know they were there. I'm not a fan of the front-mounted ones, but that's just me. Battery life will depend on the wiring scheme and LEDs used. I've only changed my battery once, and the only reason I had to do that was the LEDs accidentally got left on after packing up after a gig. Next time I opened the case was a good few days later, and they were still on! Very dim, but still on. -
A lot less than I should!! I'm 29 next week, before the last band met it's demise I was doing two 3-4 hour rehearsals a week plus around 5 hours a week alone. Child and child on the way (poor wife not having the best pregnancy!) combined with no band quickly led to about half an hour a week if I was lucky!!! To rectify this I now have bass no.3 (I got it free and it is worth about that) in my living room at all times so I can pick up for even five minutes if need be. Reckon I'm getting an hour a day in now, which I can live with considering everything else I've got going on!

line selecting/mixing channel looping on a budget.
TG Flatline replied to Prime_BASS's topic in Effects
I would stop being a girl about it, but its always on the back of mind I'm not too fussed about the dirt in one loop, but I still want the option of it being off and not effected by anything.
Often that doesn't go with cheap though, unfortunately. I'd agree with the others here, stick with the LS-2. If you really want uneffected then leave the LS-2 on all the time but put that in it's own TB loop (two loops within a loop). Alternatively, pick up the true bypass circuit from Jack Deville and you get the LS-2 but with true bypass. Shep's right though, true bypass isn't the be-all-end-all. -
Frequency specific bass distortion; a dream...
There is this from WMD which is a beast - http://www.wmdevices...ustictrauma.php However if you are in Tom's hands then I'd say you've found your answer. Tom (TGFlatline/Cog Effects) is a friggin' genius who needs to start shouting about his abilities far more than he currently does!!!!! Amazing stuff. http://www.sheponbas...og-effects.html
Very kind! Looking to meet up with Gareth in the week to discuss this further, if there's enough interest I can look at making a batch once we've finalised details...
