1.
As far as I know, Ashdown ABM cabs have always been made from birch ply.
That was my understanding too, until the one I opened up to line with wadding was MDF
  2.
So what experience do you have of these Ashdowns, TG? I thought they were rather new. Interesting that they are using side handles on the top, which looks weird. Plus point is that they are using proper birch ply.
UK built and pirch ply rather than the MDF they have used on previous cabs, a good start in the right direction. In all honesty and to answer your specific question, these are the only ABM cabs I'm yet to play, so while I am speculating I just can't see how there will be a massive improvement over the older models. Happy to be proved wrong though, should I have the opportunity to play through one of these newer models, but I haven't played through a single Ashdown cab that has come near doing what a Barefaced can.

    What effect?
You'd run another OD pedal alongside the valve channel on the head? What does that bring to the party?
Depends on what your amp OD does and what gain-based pedal you're looking at. I like options, and would very rarely have a board without three different dirt boxes on. Chances are that a Rat and a Mammoth, for example, would add completely different sounds to your amp OD and expand your options greatly. It depends on the need of the song as well. Sometimes, a particular dirt box on your board might sound fantastic in one song, but not so much in another song where you might find a more complementary sound from a different dirt box. Also, if you've not got to it yet, stacked gain stages can be just magic.

    What effect?
Is it still true that dedicated boxes are better than their programmable counterparts?
General concensus is distortions, OD and fuzz are better from single units, and anything else where you want to retain the "analogness" of that particular effect. Analog octavers and delays, for example. Getting even a modest multi-effect is a really good way of finding out what you like and what you don't, and what you'd like to hear more of and explore (here's where the singles can come in), as well hearing what things sound like together. You might not like fuzz, but stick an octave and/or filter and/or phaser in there and all kinds of sounds become available. To answer your original question, if it were me I would add a chorus or phaser in one slot, another gain-based pedal, and an octaver. I'd echo what Kev says though, and overall I'd probably suggest a multi-effect initially. Good luck
  5. Spend a bit more, go Barefaced. EDIT - Sorry, worth putting that I say that because you've already mentioned it! But definitely the better option
  6.
Pre-gig last night Looking a bit messy at the mo, but it sounds amazing! :-)
The patch leads have changed since the last photo you posted Al I bet you can have a lot of fun with that board!
  7.
I'd start with a less noisy amp.
To expand on this, just how noisy is the amp? If you ground the signal (connect your bass straight to the amp and turn the bass volume all way down) is the noise level the same? What have you got in between bass and amp normally? Have you tried different cables? I'd look at what you're doing/using first before looking to add anything else in, and look to prevent the noise (if possible) rather than fight it.
  8.
I really don't get what folk hear in that kind of bass tone? IMO it lacks bass & ends up sounding like a gui**r. But I suppose if we all liked the same sounds then music would get boring.
I know what you mean. I really like that sound, but I can't imagine ever wanting to dial it in myself.
  9.
i can't help it - i've checked it 17 times today!
Ha! I do this. Particularly good when the journey has many steps and the tracking updates with a new location. I get particularly excited when DHL tell me my parcel is in Leeds being loaded onto the van, and have been known to make excuses from the day job to go home and be there for arrival. Don't judge me!
  10.
I had the same with an Italian dealer. I bought an EBS HD650 and they sent me a Fafner instead. The Fafner was worth a lot more but they said it was easier / cheaper to just let me keep it rather than pay for two additional shipping charges
Result! Aye the shipping quickly jumps up as soon as the Channel presents a barrier. Mind you, it's jumped up a lot for domestic shipping too
  11.
This sounds lovely!
Cheers! I think Hamfist has covered what it's designed to do in his video very well!!
Can't wait to get my hands on our cheeky little dirt box creation Tom ...
Etching the next batch of enclosures on Monday and Tuesday, so coming along very nicely!
  12. Post this in the DIY sticky at the top of the Effects board and I bet you'll find a fair few lads happy to take this on for you
  13.
For all you ladies and gentlemen, a demo video of my new COG Effects Tarkin Fuzz. It is a custom one, with added blend and mids knobs, although I believe Tom may be going to start producing this as a base model in the near future.
Correct! Too many people asking for pretty much an identical setup so things are afoot...
  14. Aye, fessing up is the right thing to do here. I had similar from a German supplier, who told me to keep the goods as it was their error and the cost of collection and then their time re-processing it all when it got back wouldn't make it worth their while.
  15. Do it, that'd be a great build diary. Shep and I have talked about a similar project, currently on the back-burner, but very much along those same lines!
  16.
A work in progress... The unboxed circuit is a mammoth clone with the input impedance control of the mastotron. Originally I was going to put it in a 1590a (mooer sized enclosure) and use it as a preset fuzz, but think I might rehouse the chord octave pedal so I'll put it in along with it and bring a few of the controls out front. Don't know what to do with the groove regulator. Sounds brilliant, but there's no way to run the octave and fuzz in its loop and have access to them without the filter effect.
Relay or CMOS switching is your friend here... Grab a pen and paper and draw out the signal paths you're after: 1) Octave and Fuzz in effects loop 2) Octave and Fuzz in series with the GR. Once you've drawn that, look at what you'd need to switch to be able to get both. You'll end up with another box on your board. The GR will sit in an effects loop in that box, and the GR effects loop will be sent and received from this box also. You then have another effects loop from this box that contains the Octave and Fuzz. A single footswitch will shift the position of things. You could add another footswitch to bypass the whole thing, too, so you could set which way round things were while bypassed, and then kick it in. The additional box would have: In, Out, Send to GR, Return from GR, Send from GR Effects Loop, Return to GR Effects Loop, Send to Fuzz/Oct, Return from Fuzz/Oct. Eight jacks in total. Not the smallest box in the world, but definitely do-able. Massive use of the term "effects loop" in this post, apologies, but hope that helps you in some way!!
  17. I still maintain that Drop C is the best route to go for the OP, followed by the pitch-glide mentioned above. An octave, used in the normal sense, wouldn't do what he's asking. Obviously you could use a POG with -1 at full, and dry all the way off, and just play the whole thing an octave up on the bass. It's a very synthetic tone though. Plus, Drop-C is the tuning of kings! Stick on some 50-110's and you're winning. As for octaves that do +1 as well as -1, the Pearl OC07 is grand. Hard to find, but Madbean do a PCB for it, and with a few mods you can bring out a very nice upper octave (you do need the mods though, it's a bit weak stock). If you don't have the means yourself, post in the DIY Effects thread as I'm sure someone in there will be happy to build it for you
  18.
doesn't sound right to me at all, you shouldn't need to true-bypass the boss pedals. Have you tried them on batteries? When you wire them back up are you swapping around patch leads? It's worth checking all your patch leads as well as different power options. I like the ODB-3, for massive low end it's perfect.
Best way is to set up a few and see the difference, real world. Personally, I've had bad experiences with them (my TU-2 is kept out of line for this reason), but have seen other people use an entire pedalboard of Boss with no problems whatsoever. I'm not a die-hard True Bypass fan boy, but I'm not keen on Boss bypasses and, personally, would modify them for true bypass and remove the unneccessary extra components if I used them. Just my opinion though.
  19.
Current simple set up, modded the B3 with a footswitch. Temporary enclosure until I find/make the right one.
Always good to see DIY on boards on here nice one!
  20. Same product, re-boxed and re-badged by the looks of it. Crazy cheap.
  21. Aye have a play around with various orders! You may be tempted to put your tuner at the front of the chain, but try it without the tuner as well. I put my tuner in a loop at the start of chain as it sucked the life out of my tone when in line - others haven't had this issue with the very same tuner (TU-2). Have a look at how buffered pedals (Boss etc) can affect your fuzz/OD/distortion pedals before and after. Depending on how dynamic a player you are you may well notice a difference when you put it before. While I subscribe to the "there are no rules" rule, you will almost certainly get no joy by putting a Fuzz Face derivative (Woolly Mammoth is the most likely on bass) after a buffered pedal. For what it's worth, when it comes to drive pedals I found that going from highest gain to lowest gain was my preference. Again, not all subscribe to this either! If you've not had chance yet, trawl the Post Your Pedalboard thread for some ideas about what others are doing. You may come across something you've not thought of yet!!! Oh and post a pic when you decide what you like best when you're done
  22. Drop-C Save yourself the cash. Octave pedals are great, but from what you've said I don't think it would be the answer to your particular issue. Hope that helps!
  23.
Always wanted a full toned bass distortion pedal that didn't lose any bottom end. A good friend of my who builds pedals occasionally recommended the Ezekiel 25:17 for a clone option Used it a last week at probably one of the biggest shows I have done and it sounded awesome in every sense. Loads of low end a pretty cool Blend on the right hand side as a foot control to take the distortion in or out.
Great pedal. Really like your take on it as well!
  24.
hmm your pedals look so nice oh and btw i've recommended you to a friend (after looking at feedback from others) as he wants a russian muff clone and i told him to keep your pedals in mind and if he gets one i will try it out (probably end up ordering one myself)
Thanks very much
