  1. There is another bias. What format is used for recording and playback : mp3 or wave ? Or in other words, compressed or uncompressed file ? The mp3 is compresing, so the bass will always sound stronger and hard to recognize, the high will be less affected, but again, only good reproduction system will help... I'll listen to your sound files tomorrow through my hi-fi system and through headphones and I'll give you my answer(s).
  2. Had an early model with the original HazLabs electronics, wasn't that light... Liked the sound, but wanted something more focused, so I put a set of original Q-Tuner pickups on it and it sounded even better. Than a year or two later, I sold it for peanuts to a friend of mine who still owns it. By the way, Ned Steinberger was close to bankrupt at the beginning... Because he simply couldn't build enough instruments according to the orders until he found a new facility. In fact, as a furniture designer, he thought he could sell his design.
  3. Yes, it's certainly one of the best, but ETS runs out of stock almost all year long. Bassparts who was their official distributor/retailer in Germany doesn't want to work with them anymore because ETS can't respect their delivery time...
  4. Did you do a comparison with the Thomastik JF ? When yes, what are your thoughts ?
  5. Let the notes ring, it's so delightful ! And congratulations for your fretless bass. Good choice and terrific price. The flater the relief of the neck , the mwaher the sound of the bass and roundwounds do it even better, but the TI's are the best flatwounds with enough mwah. Use the pickup you prefer, but if you don't know where to start, use the bridge only, cut completely the tone and boost the mids to max on your amp with a pinch of treble and adjust the bass a bit lowe : instant walk over cat tails sound.
  6. I'd rather say Pino Palladino. Hope you've got an octaver. Here is your first free lesson, you'll enjoy it, for sure. https://www.scribd.com/doc/206193698/Wherever-I-Lay-My-Hat-Paul-Young-download-bass-transcription-and-bass-tab-in-best-quality-www-nicebasslines-com
  7. Anyway a gift is something someone took the time to look for and therefore shall never be (re)sold. Then he could discover what a bass really is. Ok, there are 2 problems here too : 1. He is a guitar player. 2. It's a Rick. I know the first is a curse, but the second could be worse.
  8. Link to Luminlay : http://www.luminlay.com/productsen.html
  9. Yes, Luminlay with the special LED light charger is also to consider. I have this on my Stradi Symphony fretless 5. Great too and Michael Tobias uses them too.
  10. So, what do you do when a LED burns... Deglue the whole fretboard ? I had a bass where it happened and not a cheap one...
  11. And then, you'll break strings every day because of some bad filing (burrs) and it will take you way more than 10 minutes...
  12. Simply route 5mm under the bridge and insert it. Easy to do by yourself or can be done in 10 minutes by someone knowing how to use a router. It's the best solution.
  13. Buy some length of optic fiber of your choice and then check before gluing if you need to route more, that's the best I can tell.
  14. Depends on your routing possibilities, but on my Aries these were the basic ones like 3mm diameter.
  15. You are another man of good taste. I own 4 Leduc 6 strings basses (2 fretlesses, 1 U-Basse fretted and 1 EUB) at the moment, but I've owned over 20... And I also do love the Ned Steinberger work.
  16. Use only one LED in the electronics cavity with some optic fibers going directly to the side dots nor fretboard dots, so when the LED burns, it will be easy to fix...
  17. As Ped has good taste, some views of my Leduc UMM6.
  18. ABM parts are great, but sometimes hard to find : https://abm-guitarpartsshop.com/ABM-GUITAR-PARTS/Headless-Systems/Bass:::256_2_28.html Hipshot is making great parts too : https://hipshotproducts.com/collections/bass-hardware/products/4-string-headless-bass-bridge
  19. You can hear it here :
  20. And terrific sounding basses. If you are into trades, just let me know and we'll discuss in PM.
  21. I'm basically a fretless player : sixers for the ego, one of them having 31 positions ("frets") for even greater ego. I'm also playing a 6 strings 3/4 EUB : ego, I told you. They all are unlined and my intonation is always good as I play with ears not eyes as everyone is telling it. In fact, I hate side dots at the fretted position as they are just confusing me when I take a look at the fretboard. The problem with the lines is that, in the beginning, you'll have a tendency to play right on it which will make you sound sharp. You'll also notice that your fretting fingers will not have the same hardness from day to day so you'll have to correct it by ear. There are four tricks for the beginners and others : 1. Use opened strings to check your intonation as they must be perfectly tuned. 2. Play chords from time to time, again to check your intonation : this is unforgiving. 3. Use a very good tuner like the TC Electronic Polytune in strobe mode to check if you are perfectly in tune. 4. When playing a fretted bass, play on the frets to develop your muscle memory. Use your ears, then lined or unlined won't make any difference. And don't forget to have your fretless bass perfectly set up by a real luthier as it's the key to perfect intonation. I would also add to play as often as possible in the higher positions to develop your ear precision.
  22. Never heard of fakes ? The first well known being the one owned by Slash... At that time Gibson had a strict serial system, so the quote is correct, the rest is only because it's the more sought after model and that they are very easy to fake. Money, money, money...
  23. This is the correct link : http://thebassgallery.com/bass/6-string/original-6-string.html These Sei basses are really terrific instruments.
