1.
Having learned a bit of Chris Squire recently, I've started taking a pick to rehearsals. I am absolutely loving it! So much so, the only reason I feel I want to use finger-style is when I need a bit of rub-a-dub or classical/flamenco style, which is rarely. I love the almost complete control I have over fast runs, tone, attack, pinch harmonic accents, and most of all damping. I can't really see me going back to fingers.
I have come to the same conclusion over the years, I do the flamenco stuff with pick & my other three fingers. Sometimes waver back to more finger/doublethumb style, but not for long. As Anthony Jackson says the Bass is a type of Guitar... Hey you will be trying a six-string (bass) next B
 2.
No idea if this is the correct forum, cant make my mind up which one to post in sorry. Anywho. The famous track Love will tear us apart. by Joy Division. I looked it up on one of the many bass tab sites and find that people not even 100% sure that its a bass doing the main groove. Certainly sounds like Hooky to me. However apparently he appears to be playing chords on the bass in many instances ie: hitting E & A together i think, on the intro. Can anyone out there confirm this? I tried it and it sounds like my efforts on an old acoustic i used to own ie: awful. Can anyone tell me whats going on in this track. Even better would be if anyone has it in bass clef instead of tab.
He used an 8 string Sheargold for it I think B
 3. The band and the music sound great (post-modern ELP) but that bass sounds crap! Get some proper strings on it!! B
 4.
52-110? Wow, he had tough fingers. Man's strings!
I've got 65 to 115 on my acoustic bass -- Cool I must be a man!!! LOL To the OP I think La Bella do a JJ signature set (seems self defeating as purists would only ever buy 1 set!!) B
 5.
Possibly a bit of very-subtle envelope filter too? Bit of distortion? It's an odd sound.... Whenever he plays this type of fingerstyle, he wears his Stanley Clarke influences on his sleeve for all to see (and hear!).
Yeah For an example of Stanley's version check out "Someone to come home to" by Animal Logic B
 6.
not very helpfull but kinda on topic... Marks little brother was in the year above me at school and was a good musician too was told it was his brother anyway
If his name was Nathan then it was B
 7.
IIRC, one is born either right-handed or with the potential for right or left-handedness. So bind your nippers left hand early on, force them to use the right and avoid having to pay over the odds for lefty basses. Simples.
Educationalists tried this in the 60's (forcing kids to write right-handed) -- F*&ked up a generation and caused massive educational problems Treat individuals as individuals!! B
 8.
Wow, you've wrote some really great music! Very powerful!
Agree; Rajan it sounds great powerful & emotive Do you play live (as in do gigs)? Brendan
 9. Big bumps to big Chris Brendan
 10.
I was going to suggest Columbus, but the board inlays look too high quality.

+1 - I was playing my old Columbus (bought new in '76!) last week - the bass in the pictures looks close (especially the nut) but the inlays on my bass aren't as figured or elaborate. Could it be a CMI or Kasuga (some nice basses from around the period)?
Yeah agree the blocks look better quality than on my old Columbus (also one owner '76!) (most of the components are the same, shapes are the same -- however the truss rod on mine is in the head-stock end) So probably a higher spec job from the same factory Japanese 70's B
 11. Looks like a Columbus -- rounded pick-ups & used to have small machine heads B
 12.
That was all good until this point: Carpet sucks the high frequencies out of a room and makes it sound even more dull and boxlike than it already is. Carpet is bad. As for eggboxes, well, their great... for holding eggs. As acoustic treatment they are hopeless (if not worse). Am happy to provide advice on acoustic treatment on down the line as required. Much of the requirement for acoustic treeatment will be reduced if you get the design right from the outset.
So is it best not to carpet the floor? (I am just about to carpet my studio room floor, its laminate at the moment) would save me some money... Brendan
 13.
It's the Line 6 Pod Mount. I bought it for £16 or so on eBay. It's powdercoated metal and comes with 4 little rubber feet which fit it to the Pod itself. The mount itself can be screwed down or put through the handle of an amp. Well worth the price.
Thanks I will get me a couple of them Brendan
 14.
Some might think that Studio Porn is a bit sad, but it's really helped me. Thanks Guys.
Agree this thread is a real help -- What is that you are standing/angling your Pod on?
 15.
... You can buy a big bag of rockwool from Wickes and make some DIY panels for about £50. (believe me, it'll be the best 50 you ever spend.)

+1 to all that, those panels are really easy to build as well.
Sorry to hijack donutman's thread but is there an Idiots guide to making sound panels anywhere or can you expand here or in another thread? Brendan
 16. Hello Hello it's back again!
 17.
I don't see them as tired or drunk...where do you get that ? The same attitude in the comments as with McCartney for instance : just some undefined criticism and vague references to age as the only solid reason. These "old" people certainly made my life more pleasant and still do. Luckily they won't care less of what people think...
+ 1000 B
 18.
Apologies if posted elsewhere. Anyone listening to Jazz Library at the moment.
Thanks I had forgotten but listening now on iplayer --- How can anyone say Jaco had a bad tone?! Brendan
 19.
Yeah Carles is great - as are the rest of that band. Saw them about 4 or 5 years ago at the Barbican I think. Really taken by his style. To say I'm not impressed by the technical ability of Marcus's solo here would be a lie. It's just that I'm so inspired by the fashion that everything else takes a back seat. Since first watching this video my wardrobe has gradually seen an influx of saggy wifebeaters and massive trackie bottoms. Also, whenever I'm on a gig with an alto sax player, quite without realising it I often end up next to him doing the same weird grooving leg dance during his solo.
LOL I was thinking of going for a style that encompasses the two greats in those videos (Carles & Marcus)... So if I had the long hair, grey beard with the wife beater, joggers & porkpie hat Do you think it would improve my playing???! B PS very jealous you caught that Chick Corea gig!
 20.
Definite need to build up some calluses. I haven't played properly for about 2 months now so mine are gradually disappearing. Don't seem to stay as long as they used to I would have thought it would have been the other way around: older=callus stays longer. But not it would seem.
+ 2 Build calluses. In the old days (when I were a lad!!! LOL) we used to rub surgical spirit on the ends of our finger to help harden them! In them days strings were barbed-wire and action was what you got at the weekend! B
 21. No one voted for this guy yet so here is the great Carles Benavent:
 22. Very sad Love to all Brendan
 23.
+1. I have a feeling a few of us on here won't fit your demographic!
+2 What, where, when --- Age range?
 24.
yep, thats the one, forgot to mention that he sings as well while he's playing it, thanks for the clip, will have to see if there is any more out there, mike b.
I have got the whole programme -- On Beta-Max!!! In the Loft
 25.
+ 1000 Colin is the man -- Even Stanley Clark says so! B
Here is a bit of the programme that wrinkleygit saw: Brendan
