Hahahaha, it's a viscous circle isn't it?!? I'm sort of the same with a Jazz too tbh. One minute they're too nasal, the next I love them. Maybe a P with a J neck is the answer? I'm sure the classifieds will help you out with a Steinberger in the not too distant! 😂

I'm fairly new to the world of flats, but so far..... I thought I'd experiment with a relatively cheap (for flats) fender set for my first pair and whacked them on a Precision. I'm not a fan really, the tension is too high for me personally and it feels like I'm playing with cables. Over the past few years I've become predominantly a pick player (I've been playing in heavier/louder bands), but after playing with fingers (in a blues band) in a 3hr rehearsal I found my fingers were hurting with the fender flats. I still have calluses, so don't think it's a case of having wussy fingers, but I am quite heavy handed. A few months ago I out some TI flats on an SG and they're a dream to play. Really easy to fret, really easy to bend and they sound great too. Although they're a bit more expensive, they'd be my first choice.

I tend to fall in and out of love with P basses, I can't decide whether they're 'meh' and boring, or exactly what you need. Part of me thinks you're not a bass player unless you own a P, then I pick one up and within a couple of years year I find myself playing it less and less and thinking about selling it. I'm currently in 'meh' mode and thinking of selling my MIJ PB70US. It's easily one of the best basses I've played and I know if I sell it that I'll be looking to buy a P in the next couple of years. Ah well, it's a good job the classifieds are here 😂

Brill, thanks very much. I generally don't use pup covers as rests, so could get away with it. Or I'm thinking of looking into how much it'd cost to chrome the current cover.

I did, it came with the original one it was sold with. I've tried putting the DC in it and it doesn't fit. The curve for the horns on the DC are nearer the neck and it doesn't even squeeze in. I'd guess a SG guitar case might fit your Antoria? Thanks for the heads up about the gator case, I'll add that to the shopping list! The soft case it comes with is pretty decent, but I don't like that you can see the neck break angle and wouldn't really want to take it out of the house as is. I do love that the case candy includes a photo of the guitar in the factory being checked. I suppose it could be any blue DC, but it's a nice touch!

There are so many great tunes and not that many obscure ones. On top of what's been mentioned, I'd chuck 'We're gonna groove' in there.

A couple of things to note after having played the DC for a bit longer.... When playing sitting down, ideally you'd have a right angle jack as the socket is on the bottom of the bass. If you're playing on a stool or chair without arms it's not so much of an issue, but I'm generally sat on my bed if playing at home and could see it messing with straight jack's in the long run. The slab body takes a bit of getting used to and moving around of my right arm to find a comfy spot. I feel different basses ask you to play them in different ways, so I don't mind changing to suit the bass. It's not a bad thing, just something to think about when playing it. I still haven't played it at volume and in a band situation, but am digging the coil tap so far!

I've just ordered from Bax over the £135 threshold and there wasn't any extra charges for me. I paid the VAT on purchase and I think any other handling fees are partially dependant on who the product is shipped with. I did read an article on the charges different handlers have and Hermes were one of the only companies that didn't have any extra charges. I know they get a lot of stick, but the bass turned up a day earlier than expected and in top condition. I've just had a quick look for the article, but can't find it. I'll post it when I do 😃

Sorry, I completely missed this! I think it was after I had already picked up the SG, so was in a hazey honeymoon period and didn't catch the reply. I know what you mean about the ergonomics of the DC, the slab takes some getting used to, but i think I've cracked it and am used to sharp corners with my Ric 😃 Really like the mods you've made to yours - especially the chrome pup cover. Did you pick that up from a UK shop?

Turns out the answer to this age old question is......... Get both! After playing and falling in love with the SG, I've decided I'm going to sell my P and have replaced it with the DC. The P feels like a boat in comparison now and the shorties are so much easier to noodle around the neck, I'm really loving them both! The DC only arrived the other day, but I'm really impressed with it so far. The back of the neck is a lot rounder in your hand, but its by no means a baseball bat and is still very comfy. I've just spent the last hour or so trying different playing positions with my right hand and have found what works for me, so colour me impressed! I think I'll play around with it for the next month or so and then chuck some TI flats on it 😊

Good question.........it turned up yesterday, but I've been pretty busy with work and then out in the evenings, so I've only managed to get about 20 mins on it so far. When I get a chance to put it through its paces I'll let you know! One thing to note though is that it's a coil tap as opposed to coil split, so isn't really going into single coil mode 😊 I can't fault the way it feels or workmanship though, it's a lovely bass. And yup, this forum is dangerous on the wallet!

I picked up a Gibson SG at the start of the year and it's a fantastic bass, feels great and has a big round tone that sounds great with flats. It was my first short scale bass and it's to much easier to get around, so much so that I'm now going to sell my precision and have just picked up another shorty - the Gibson DC Jnr. I think I'm a convert! The precision feels like I'm driving a family estate at 50mph on the motorway and the shorties feel like I'm ragging an XR2i down a country lane, it's so much fun! 😂

That makes sense that there isn't any additional charge. Admittedly, I have zero knowledge on how this all works, but if I've paid the VAT on purchase then I can't see how I'd have to pay any other handling costs. I might give Bax a shout and see if they can confirm it!

Apologies for the potentially stupid question.......does this mean there'll be no extra costs incurred when buying from Thomann once they start collecting the 20% VAT? Has anyone bought anything over £135 from other retailers doing the same? I have my eye on a bass from Bax and notice they include VAT, so am just wondering if there'll likely be any extra costs involved?

Buy it, buy it, buy it!! 😂 I've a JB tribby and couldn't be happier with it, the build quality, feel and tone are all fantastic. I'm sure you'd be very happy with yours!

Here's a couple of boards that I use for my bands. First up, for my noisy band we have this....the rusty box is my always on, has a clear and massive grit tone that cuts through anything and then the blower box and bobba fuzz make an appearance on a couple of tunes. And then I've been playing around with a few pedals since the new year for a blues band and have something no way near as orrible sounding! I'm digging the Beta and it's an always on for a fat, round, tone. The SFT them makes an appearance for tunes that need a bit more oommph. Annoyingly, I thought the fuel tank would fit under a nano, but I can't get it to fit when the leads are plugged in. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

True, I've had a go at slinging it that low just to see how it feels and I can't see how he manages to play like that. Still, he gets a good tone and plays some great lines!!

I sling my bass pretty low and find if comfy to have my right arm fairly straight when playing. Not as low as Tatsu Mikami though!!

Part Chimp are always loud, to the point of it being painful unless you have earplugs. I've got tix for their next London show in November and can't wait!!
