1. HH were amazing, I've been using a 30 year old Bass Machine for a few years now, with two matching cabs. Best head I've ever used, and one of the best designed/constructed amps I've ever come across. Used a V/S head at a local rehearsal space, LOVED it, would love to get my hands on one of those too. Would never sell my current amp though, not even when I'm too old to lift it lol. Laney has revived the brand by the way, here. I've been in touch, and it's coming on the market soon, supposedly they are just sorting out their distributor network for worldwide release. No guesses as to how long that will take though. Anyway, the new stuff -looks- good, especially some of the PA stuff, can't wait to have a go on it.
 2. that is an absolutely beautiful example of its kind. whoever buys that, shall be very lucky indeed (i wish it were me!).
 3. ha, nice one mate, love that sort of stuff. only reinforces my desire to get an M9, too.
 4.
Cos they have a hard life, usually discoloured, and its a common problem with a lot of amps. I'd check or change the 1K Screen feeds to the EL34s as well, cos if one or two are O/C you might not notice that the amp is not running on all of the output valves. Only my opinion, based on experience though.
No, seems perfectly sensible. I've not got a huge amount of experience with valve amps myself, mostly solid-state and/or small-signal, so I shall keep this in mind too.
 5.
The (usually)100K Resistors (Brown Black Yellow) connected to pin 1 & pin6 of each ECC valve. http://www.soundcitysite.com/sc_webpages/sc_120_1.jpg
I think he meant, why would replacing them make a huge difference.
 6.
Haven't tried it at serious gig volumes yet - this is aimed more at a recording/re-amping setup to give the rec. engineer a lot of flexibility at the mixing stage. Just trying different stuff out to see what works and what doesn't - mostly planning out what I need to do to isolate cabs from each other during trackig etc. It does kinda work in a live environment, but I'm taking on board the phase issues as well.
hmm, I'm not sure that it's as helpful as you might think, IME if anything it might make mixing more difficult. For mixing flexibility, a full-range dry signal (like a DI) and a full-range effected signal (mic'd up bass cab maybe) are really all that you need. From these, anything else can be re-amped or filtered. obviously though, do whatever works best for you.
 7. holy phase issues, Batman. Still, if it sounds good...
 8. They say they are using B&O modules, if anyone is curious these are probably the modules they're using: I.C.E. Power They really are fantastic modules, I'm not surprised at all if they're the ones Ashdown have chosen.
 9.
I'm pretty sure this would do it, if you wire up a 4pdt switch as follows, the send to fx and return would be common to both keyboard and bass sides of the switch, when fx is not on in bass side the signal goes clean to amp, and signal diverts to fx for keys, when u press the switch the bass signal goes to fx then back to amp, the kyb goes clean to DI
I concur, this should do the job just fine.
 10.
Are you telling me I can't hear every note?
The off-axis response of any pistonic driver is governed by a first-order Bessel function, and thus diminishes as measurement angle increases away from the surface normal. The rate at which it decreases is highly dependent upon frequency, with higher-frequencies having lower off-axis response for a given angle and driver radius 'a' than a lower frequency would. This off-axis response is also governed by the relationship between the wavenumber 'k' and driver radius 'a', with larger radii having worse off axis-performance than a smaller driver at the same frequency. Of course, at high frequencies, drivers will stop behaving pistonically and start behaving in more of a distributed mode pattern, making the approximations here imperfect. However, the theory still holds. TL;DR -- what this means in english is that whilst you may be hearing every note you play, many of the higher harmonics of your playing are being directed squarely at your bottom, and odds are you will never hear them. However, on a raised stage, the cabs are likely about head-height with the audience, and thus the audience will hear a different bass tone to the one you hear. If your cabs have tweeters however, and assuming you don't stand directly in front of them, then it probably doesn't make a massive difference. But I'm sure you are already aware of this phenomenon.
 11. i wouldn't worry about something being 'too loud' for home practice. surely, that's what a volume control is for? my 'practice' rig is the size of me...it's also my only rig. i would leave the SWR combo at the rehearsal room, as it saves you having to lug something there. a lightweight 2x12 or 2x15 with a head should sort you for everything else, i'd imagine.
 12.
trying to persuade my guitarists to stack 2 2X12's vertically rather than use there 4X12's. Tis not working at all.
bet you wouldn't have much difficulty convincing them to stack two 4x12's though. mind you, the bass and drums would never be heard again.
 13.
When I lived with my parents, we used to have one of those old Philips reel to reel tape recorders with the green 'Magic Eye' recording level light. It was all valve driven and dated from the sixties. There was a DIN socket on the side for plugging in an extra microphone so I wired up a cable with a DIN plug, switched it on and.... out flowed a fantastic angry overdriven sound. I could really use that sound in pedal form. That was my first practice amp.
I'm no expert on this era, but I believe many of those devices used EF86 or similar pentode valves for the pre-amp stage. You can still find EF86's, maybe try making a pedal out of it (or having one made)? Not sure it's been done yet.
 14. moog mf101 with a sprung expression pedal?
 15.
Are those cables time aligned so that the bass and treble arrives at the same time?
Actually, copper and other cable materials are a dispersive medium to electromagnetic waves -- waves of differing frequencies will have a different propagation speed. However, it only makes a difference over great distances (several to many miles) -- one of the reasons why the landline telephone system is so bandwidth limited, in fact. (You may have already known this. I couldn't tell from your post.)
 16.
A fellow Maybeshewill fan! I waas going to post something from them aswell, or something from ASIWYFA's Gangs. It's a great time for Post-Rock in the UK at the moment.
agreed!
love this band, and this bass tone: [BMRC Video]
completely forgot about them! another great bass tone off of the same album --
 17. Matt bought an EHX pedalbag from me -- paid quickly, excellent communication and does what he says. Great guy and would definitely deal with again! UPDATE 01/06/2011 -- I said I'd deal with him again, and I did! Matt bought my EHX compressor off me this time, and once again was a top bloke and an absolute pleasure to deal with.
 18.
i use one of these, great piece of kit. brilliant for recording into a computer with a dynamic mic like a 58, and of course for making your bass go donk
cheers, yea i'm sad to see it go but it's just not getting used -- lots of uses beyond just bass guitar, hopefully it will serve someone else as well as it has me
 19. EHX Black Finger Tube Compressor, 75 pounds shipped -- NOW SOLD
 20. I used one of the 4x10's once, powered with a Behringer 300 watt head -- ran my sansamp direct into the power amp input of the amp, and then into the cab. Not the worst bass sound I've ever had, actually very usable, but nothing to write home about. Can't speak for reliability, but that cab has been at that venue for ages, and is presumably still there being used, so make of that what you will.
