1. Hi Beams or Fat Beams for SS. D'Addario XL for nickels. SIT Rock Brights too.
2.
Now don't get me wrong, I love the aesthetics of a Jazz bass, and I love the sound when I play them alone (as you do when trying them out in a shop...) but whenever I turn up to play with a band and get one of my JBs out, they always ask if I've brought a P bass with me, as no matter who I play with, they always prefer the sound of the Precision. So I have a Fender Classic 60s Jazz, nitro finish, lovely beast, and a new US Standard Jazz both sitting in cases upstairs and I never get to use them in anger. Is this a common experience? I suppose in an ideal world I'd meet someone with a pair of little-used Precisions because they always play Jazzes and we could arrange a swap! Glad I got that off my chest, now back to learning tomorrow's set....on a Precision!
?? Every single time I've had an audition, I have bought my Jazz. More versatile than a P and everyone always remarks on how good it sounds.
3. I would go for 45-100 flats if I were you. La Bella, GHS for thumpy tone, Chromes, Fender 9050s for bright modern tone.
4. Sounds like flats in that vid to me.
5. Black silks old flats. Green silks new flats.
6. In the video below, he is using a white Jazz with hi mass bridge. Red colour string silks so either TIs or low gauge La Bellas. Using an Aguilar rig too. https://youtu.be/fI2jABvHe9o
7.
Sorry, but even after googling the name, I have no idea who he was. Sorry to hear of his passing, but not a clue.
Why comment on this thread then?
8.
Bollocks.
Spot on.
9.
No it isn't, the whole point of an active bass is to provide a buffered low impedance output to the bass so that the capacitance of the lead doesn't cause high frequency attenuation in the cable. Having active tone is just a by product of it being powered
Bollocks.
10. Just buy a passive bass? The whole point of active basses is er, active EQ.
11.
What else is there to making a tone like that? As far as I'm aware he only plays with fingers.
Two Ampeg rigs, one for clean tones, one for dirty tones. A/B pedal to combine them. Probably one of his own overdrive pedals on top too on certain tracks for heavy bits.
12. This one too, fave song off the album:
13. Evil Empire is one of the best bass tones ever heard on record in my humble opinion.
14. I would definitely try gear out for myself before blowing a huge wad of cash on it, good review or not. Never think it's good to buy blindfolded...
15. I like steels but I tend to find when they're dead, they really are dead. Nickels just keep going.
16. Strings Direct are the best string suppliers in the UK bar none.
17. Just search on YouTube for 'And Justice for Jason'.
18. Hi Beams and Fat Beams are as smooth as it gets for SS. Unless you go the coated SS route but then you won't get that piano sound steel strings are known for. Or you could actually grow some callouses on your fingertips?!
19. Oh look... another Richard Bona signature head...
20. Why on earth is the Genz Benz Shuttle in this thread?! Warwick ProFet 3.2. Even through a 4x10 it was too quiet and still couldn't get a decent tone.
21. Rotosound customer service has always been great for me too. Installed a set once with a dead A, got in touch with them and a week later, the single A arrived and on top, a brand new set of strings.
