1. Christmas Greetings to one & all and may you all have a tuneful New Year. Balcro.
2. I tried the same as you but ended up with a minus 0.77cm. Is that really a port? So, I changed the port length to 1.8cm, the thickness of the front baffle, and the tuning dropped to 73.93Hz. The frequency response peak is now about +3.5 at 80.5Hz. That's a punchy unfretted Lower E. With a 120watt input signal it reaches xmax at about 60Hz and power handling dips to 227w @ 93.0Hz!! Less than half the quoted specification, but it's still a normal response. Mind you, with 120w input it's turning out nearly 113dB(a)! The pattern of your Maximum Power graph is very much the same. That dip you report at about 100Hz is the dip in power handling that I've mentioned above. It's slightly different because of the change in tuning. Balcro.
3. Hi Luke, Nice to see someone else who also finds WinIsd results occasionally surprising. I presume that the SICA units were in there from new. I tried a different tack and re-ran WinIsd using the "super boom-box" option under the Choose Alignment option. That produced more conventional results as far as the response curve was concerned. WinIsd left to its own devices came up with a 41 litre box tuned to 54 Hz. If you tweak that up to 65 litres and a tuning of 68Hz the graph looks smoother with very slight rise near 85Hz (a square vent 6cm x 24cm). Probably average for a bass guitar cab - just around the frequency of Low E or F. Check out Maximum Power & Cone excursion! These things sure ain't hi-fi! Balcro
4. The SICA speaker is on their website. A Neo magnet version rated at 250w. Fundamental resonance "Fs" is quoted as 54Hz. The horn is probably also by SICA as the letters N and TW appear under the heading "Studio Monitor tweeter". Tecamp also refer to an NTW1 horn. I had a play with the main unit in WinIsd and it has an exaggerated upward twist in the lower end frequency response. Tuning is probably in the 60's (Hz). I've no idea about that small quantity of foam. Balcro.
5.
I was thinking about Hoffman's Iron Law and was wondering if anyone was producing a really small, very hi-fi very low efficiency cab for use at home. I'm thinking that, with the relative cheapness of power available in micro heads into a really inefficient but high quality design, something could be made that would have a micro head footprint, sound great, and not be too noisy to upset the Mrs and neighbours...
If you fancy a spot of DIY, you could consider this 8" Monacor unit available from Wilmslow Audio. http://www.wilmslow-audio.co.uk/monacor-sph-8m-1114-p.asp http://www.monacor.co.uk/products/speakerbuilding-hifi6-9/vnr/101630/ Nominally 100w power handling , but I would limit it to about 75. Only 89dB(a) rated output for 1w input, so quieter than the usual shop bought speakers such as the MiBass. Seems to measure quite well in a 22 litre ported enclosure. Footprint could be about the same size as a Shuttle 6.2. Balcro.
6. Uriah Heep Live '73. Absolute monster!! The 68 minute slice on yuotube leaves off the rock 'n roll medley. As an alternative check out the "Live in San Diego" video. Balcro.
7.
I have a GK MB210 combo and I want to get an extension cab for it but I'm not sure what sort of output I'll end up with from different combinations of my combo plus various ext cabs. My combo's output on it's own is 350w @ 8ohms and it says full power 580w on the back. Can someone tell me what sort of output I can expect from the following cabs if I pair them with my combo: 8ohm 200w cab 4ohm 600w cab 8ohm 400w cab Can I use an 8ohm cab with a combo already rated at 8ohms?
You should connect an 8 Ohm cabinet. Once connected, the amplifier will "see" 2 pairs of 8 ohm cabinets. This will result in the amplifier working into a 4 ohm load. The amp will be capable of delivering equal power to both pairs of speakers, i.e 250 (?) watts for each pair. The matching GK 2x X whatever will probably give you the most even match in terms of tone and equal volume. If not, then from your examples above, I would choose the 8 Ohm 400w cab. Balcro.
8. Good job you checked in here first before "ruining them in". No that's not a misprint. As BFm says, the pages & pages of threads on this subject must now add up to a saga. So much so, that we need a pinned "Read This First" sub-forum. However, you may be lucky. You may not be so lucky. We shall see. We need to know detail. Tell us the exact description of the speakers you've bought - are they the Sovereign 12-500LF as shown on the Fane website? Secondly, as a crude starting point only: the 2 H&H speaker boxes. We need the dimensions and a description of the ports or slots. Pictures would be helpful. Balcro.
9. There are quite a few who have done a build-it-yourself as well as those with the technical knowledge to match a speaker drive-unit to its enclosure. If you haven't already, take a look at the "DIY cabs" and "lightweight cabs" sub-forums. Why not elaborate on what you have in mind and we'll get you started. Advice will soon come flooding in. Balcro.
10. I know it's a long time back, but I'm always losing stuff and in this case I had a substitute so didn't worry immediately. Did anyone find a stray hand-held off-white Korg tuner at the June Bash? I think it was a Korg CA-1 or very similar. Thanks, Balcro.
11. They can argue a lot of things, but they may have you by the short & curlies! Presumably your faulty unit is new this year. Last years' Kappalite LF model had an Fs of 37Hz. the latest model is listed with an Fs of 44Hz. I think the 2013 Kappalite is a revised model and is indeed described as they say, for full-range or mids, but for MOST (not all) bass applications it would be OK. Adding an octaver pedal may put some stress on it if you were really turning up the wick AND if you had installed it in a mismatched enclosure. That last bit is questionable because those speakers have a wide range of acceptable volume for the enclosure. In the case of the current Kappalite it's between 51 and 144 litres. However, towards the top end of that scale the power handling is reduced to below 360 watts. If 400+ watts is fed in, then the speaker will exceed "xmax" (between 50 - 60Hz) and could with sustained use, possibly cause some damage. There are so many variables it's impossible to prove you're in the right. Unfortunately I think the other stuff they mention about gain settings and volume is true. Balcro.
12. If you only play at home and there's no immediate prospect of gigging then my choice would be the Perfect 10. You have a headphone socket for silent home practice and a line-in with a "Mix" control for a CD or other music source so that you can play along to tracks. It's very definitely a home practice amp-combo. It may also be adequate for coffee bar or restaurant work. The EB220 doesn't appear to have those facilities, but has adequate power for small gigs in pubs when playing with others. It has a more sophisticated EQ section as well as a D.I for output to a mixing desk, or P.A. Balcro.
13. Hi Skidder, This is slightly left-field question, but from which of your two speaker boxes did the Kappalite fail? The Kappalite is usually very robust and in the right cabinet will handle the full rated power of 450 watts right down to 40 Hz. Most speakers are nowhere near as good in the lower bass octave. However, with a few extra Hz it's power handling drops dramatically. At 35Hz it's power handling could be under 200 watts. I'm also slightly suspicious about the reply from your retailer when they refer to "fitting a high pass filter to prevent very harmful low frequencies reaching the driver". I wonder where that came from? Maybe here?? If you check out the plain Kappalite info on Eminence's web-site and select the Cabinet Design PDF, there's a little note at the top. How useful. Balcro PS. The huge power handling down to 40Hz followed by a very sudden drop may explain why you didn't hear it farting out.
14.
Noah and the Whale are from Twickenham and featured in the last series [?] I keep watching. The occasional jewel still turns up.
Thanks cybertect, Yes, that looks like them. Balcro.
15. Thanks for the heads-up spongebob. I suspect most of us live in hope. I saw most of the last series but only found one unknown (to me) act that made me want to hear more. They were "Gasp!" playing a pop song. Then I forgot who they were. Age creeping up again. Anyone remember a band from Twickenham with 2 brothers? Balcro.
16.
Ok, so not technically me... but a genetic clone, two years old, with pretty much the same barnet, dress sense and eating habits.
Wow, I can't believe it. It's Ian Hunter before he was permed! :D Balcro.
17. I've served enough notices on breweries and managers to know that many of the older devices were put in following complaints from residents. The old units with just the "electronic orange" were also poorly specified with limited tweaking allowed, so they usually appeared over sensitive. I've known them be set-off by audience hand-clapping without music. Crazy. They're usually fitted too close to the band or screwed to a low ceiling, sometimes both. An impossible & impractical situation. The newer models have adjustable A, B or C "weighting" switches inside the box, so Environmental Health Officers or Acoustic consultants can set them to best match the likely noise. If those guys aren't there when the box is installed, then they're probably not set-up at all. For any rock-pop group you need "C" weighting. Light-music/folky stuff should be OK with "B". "A" weighting in a musical entertainment venue is a waste of time. Since the 2005 Licensing Act, a few new units have been fitted as part of a requirement for a Licence because Environmental Health thought it likely there would be a problem, so no definite complaint history had been established. Some pubs etc., are so close to houses and bedrooms that IMO they should never have been granted a licence. The situation is ridiculous for all concerned. If the manager/landlord shows you how to by-pass the connected socket, then that's down to to him. The council can act against him. It's always the manager's fault unless he can prove that he didn't know the noise controller had been by-passed. Even so he could still get "done" because he's supposed to know! Even when there's chewing gum residue over the microphone or sensor! Balcro.
18.
I think that's a model 250 valve guitar head.
I think you could be right. They date from about 1981. The place to go for info on this "Brown" series is a guy called Pirk in Czechoslovakia. The impression is that the model 250 is a renamed C160T. Try this link - http://www.pirk.estranky.cz/clanky/acoustic-roster---reference-of-the-model-numbers-__.html As it says, send him an e-mail. Balcro.
19. Thanks for that Clarky, Wacky and beautiful bass. Lovely contrast in the wood tones and sounds really good in the hands of such a player. As you say, such clean & rich chords. Balcro
20.
I can get one of ebay for arround 10€ with shipping included from UK, that's a price i'm prepared to accept. Can somebody answer just the question about cleaning the voice coil gap? My mind says yes but would be reassuring to hear it from somebody else. Cheers
That brownish gunk you've found is probably not a lubricant but the fluid designed to cool the voice-coil! So if that leaks out the cooling will be even further reduced. This doesn't look good. I think you need more than just a diaphragm!! See here - http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=290-532 Balcro.
21.
I looked for MI 1x10 and 1x12 cabs info on Ashdown home page but there is no frequency range of both cabs. Does anyone know What are frequency ranges of both cabs and what is impendance? On page says 1x10 is 4 ohm and 1x12 is 8 ohms but here it says different. http://www.session.d...chparam=ashdown http://www.session.d...hparam=mi%20112 Help me please.
You are correct. It does look unusual. Ashdown's reference on the web-site to pairing the Mi10 with the MiBass 2.0 Amp head doesn't look practical as the two speaker outlets are 8 ohms? Putting two 8 ohm cabs together will give the minimum specified load to the amp of 4 ohms. Send Ashdown an e-mail from their "Contact" link. They will confirm the impedance of the two speakers. As for "what is impedance" have a look at the pinned thread - Amps & cabs - Impedance etc. Balcro.
22. Hello helmn, As a matter of interest, which loudspeaker drive unit did you use for the project? Balcro.
23.
Oh and Balcro, you need to to go get yourself a Fuzzrocious BDPG Check out www.fuzzrociouspedals.com Si
Ooohhh!! Sound samples and demos on the web-site. It'll have to be a "custom" finish for my BDPD. That will save them from sending it wrapped in a brown paper bag. But first, buy a new piggy-bank. Cheers, Balcro
24. The library of avatar-to-faces has expanded and I've had a grand day out. Thanks to theGreek & co for the organising and fixing the two seminars. Just 2 pictures to show. Unfortunately I can't put full captions to them. In pic 1, Bluejay is holding a camera, Happy Jack is guesting on another Basschatter's rig, Clarky is holding an ultra compact ATS speaker cabinet. Apologies for not knowing the guy playing Happy Jack's Status. Pic 2, turn 120 degrees to the right. Hapy Jack's rig getting another workout.
25.
You meant Saturday ....right? Or have I got the day wrong ?
At the time I didn't. Did a double take on Monday. Panic. Had to buy Mrs B a multi-pack of Cadbury's Flake and a packet of Jelly Babies. Saturday shopping rearranged. Balcro.
