Wizard Thumper. Anyone Have Trouble Fitting One?
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
I used to be very sceptical about pickup changes but the thumper made a real difference to my bass, far more than I thought it would
Same here. Ive been very impressed with the Wizard pups. I al so have some in my HW-one Jazz. -
And the risk you are getting a bit near the delicate bits
Yeah, one slip and i could write off the pup. To be honest if this bass was in a colour i liked i would make sure i sorted this out, but all this to get a black PG on to a bass im not really in love with (colour wise only) is a bit too much hassle. -
2mm sounds like it might be a bit much but I had success sanding down the pickup casing when in a similar situation on a jazz set. Would that be an alternative?
Unfortunately not. As an example if i hook the PG over one end of one half of the pup, it covers part of the opposite screw hole, as well as the edge of the case. Another idea i had was to file down the lip around the coil. I figured this might help me squeeze it in to a smaller cover but it all seems like a lot of effort. Thanks anyway. -

Thanks very much for the offer but I think I'll just keep things as they are for now. Your covers sound about the same as my squier covers but I know the thumper won't fit inside it. -
What you could do is to nut a new set of Fender covers as the cover is not fixed to the pick up, so perhaps a genuine fender cover would fit without filing £5 from the states or I think I got one a while ago from Oasis in ringwood
I'm not sure that would work. I still have the Squier pups that fit but the coils from the Thumper wont fit the cover. Plus, Andy has already told me that these are standard Fender cases (size wise) so i think I'm stuck unless i do some filing. I did have another go today but its too much hassle. -
Here's an interview with Pat Park with the mint green Ray34 CA. Not particularly interesting.

This is about 2mm longer so theres no chance of easing it in. Its more the screw lugs rather than the main body, alothugh it is still slightly longer. I think im going to try a different pup first. I know thats not the cheapest route but i dont want to keep filing these things down. The only real experience ive had with this sort of thing was with Changing the PG's o nmy 2 Duck Dunns and changin gthe Hanson for a Fralin in my last one. No issues at all. -
If you get the sunburst and want a rw board... do announce it here, I'd be even more tempted for the green one if I knew I could get a maple board to swap (I forgot to add: if I bought, I'd buy used, I don't feel like paying £600 for a Ray34 represents a good investment)
Hmmm, considering the amount (or lack of) second hand Ray34's that have been on here i think you will have a very long wait to pickup a secondhand classic. I would be up for a swap if i didnt like the maple, but im hoping i will.

Thanks bumnote. Andy did say he uses a standard allparts case, same as Fender, but maybe i need to get sometihng just that bit smaller. I can file the new PG down but im fed up having to do it each time. -

wow, that was quick. I had considered this but the coils are a bit too tight to go in the Squier cover. Cheers. -
Ive posted a few times about having to file down my Squier CV P pick guard to get my Thumper fitted. I put it down to the Squier PG not being standard. Ive just received a Standard PG and im finding the same thing. The Thumper is too large for the cut out. Im just wondering if anyone else has found this. It could well be both PG's are slightly undersized but i doubt it.
Huwberry awesome video! this is my first videotake ever covering a favourite for years, killing in the name of from Rage against the Machine. For me it was more experimenting with sound while recording a video. Pleece x-gooze my rage at 4:00 to 4:18^^ Hope you enjoy it
Nice deep growl you've got going on there.
Hello! A friend took some video of us at our last gig in O'neils - Liverpool on Sunday, so I thought I'd stick them up here... Bear in mind, this is probably my 6th gig ever and I'm still pretty nervous, I was just trying to keep it solid, no flair whatsoever! Anyone else find it weird seeing yourself on video? I've noticed that I have this horrible smirk on my face most of the time, stand like a right weirdo and make silly facial gestures to people I know in the crowd?! I must smile more!
I also enjoyed those. I do find it quite shocking how bored i look in some of our live videos. I guess i know i am but im always surprised it comes across to the audience as well. Must try harder this year to smile.

New Squier Transformation Project Now 100% Completed
dave_bass5 replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in Bass Guitars
Sure Dave, the thread I discussed this goes way back when I first modded the Moo- moo and this P Bass. however I got my Fender original P/guard from a private eBay dealer, it was in a sealed Fender branded shrink wrapped packet, you just need to make sure it's a 13 holes one and that matches these specs: Incidentally these people (who I have used before and can recommend to you) could get hold of original Fender parts, so send them an email, see what they say http://www.axesrus.com/AxePlatesBass.html
Thanks very much. I had a look on the Axesrus site and they have them with the same dimensions as in your post for £18 so ill take a chance. -
They do seem to sit in the middle but they do have a lot of differences to the HW-one. I cant tell if they are below or above the HW-one as the price is pretty similar. Discussed here New Fenders
Yes, we've been over this in a previous thread, Squier CV pickguards are cut exactly as the original Fender ones. They fit nice and flush, no extra drilling required. The only problem you might have would be if your truss rod adjustment is at the end of the neck and not on the headstock, in which case you will need to chisel out a small indentation to allow for the screwdriver to access the recessed truss rod slot.
Sorry to go over this again but could you point me to the thread that has discussed this, or could you tell me the exact PG you used. There are many Fender PGs and im assuming its not the MIA one you used as the TR cut out isnt there (like you said). Ive read a few people have put on various Fender PG's only to find the curve up by the jack socket is slightly off and can leave a small gap. I'd love to get a black one but dont want to risk getting the wrong model. The bass is looking great now. Im tempted to get a MM neck at some point as i too would love a maple neck on mine. Cheers. -
Bassist with McFly uses Stingrays, you dont get a higher recommendation than that ;-)
John Deacon was partial to a Stingray for a while and used to record a lot with it. He used the P bass more live for the look.
It was seeing John play a stingray live on tv end of last year that got me interested in the MM tone. And funny enough it was waynes sub that became my first MM.
