I keep going between Jazz and P. While i prefer the Jazz bass i find my D and G string get a bit lost in a band mix, especially up to the 5th fret. Playing a open D and a fretted D on the A sting gives me quite a different volume. Ive always found this to a certain extent and only on Jazz basses. EQ helps though and its not something that would put me off for life, its just something im aware of and is probably the one reason i stick to my P most of the time. Ive had a PJ but the problem there is you dont get a true Jazz tone as you only have the one single coil bridge pup, and i like the slightly mid scooped tone of both pups on.
I tell you what though, I do miss the portability of the 1212L sometimes for small, low volume gigs. The 410L, much as I love it, is overkill for a lot of situations with PA support.
Yeah, the size of the 1212L is perfect IME. 99% of my gigs are without PA support and ive never had to turn my head up past halfway, to me this means im loud enough (normally too loud gong by some of the recordings) so this has meant no need for a bigger cab. The biggest cab ive ever owned was a Epifani UL212 and that was nowhere near as loud as my 1212L, and i really had to push that do to the lack of punchy mids. This experience is whats making me a bit cautious about changing cabs, although the posts ive read recently about the Compact have put my mind at ease. In the past ive felt that as long as i can be heard without having to push my rig to distortion or too hard im happy, but now i realise i want a different tone and no matter how many heads i go through its the cab thats the restricting factor. Even if i do need to turn up more with a Compact im sure ill have plenty of volume but a more pleasant tone as well.

I always wanted a 410L but never really got around to getting one. I always thought my 1212L was ideal (and its worked really well over the past few years). i did borrow one for one gig and was very, very impressed with it. I preferred the tone over the 1212L, even when my 1212L was still in favour with me.

Thanks Lago. Ive heard a 410L and its not really as in your face as the 1212L.

Nice one Chris. Glad it worked out for you. Im probably going to go for one, its just working out the logistics of getting it. Im at a gig at the moment and my 1212L sounds so in your face, without sounding smooth or deep. Ive got both heads hooked up and the Streamliner is doing a better job, ive got the 660hz cut quite a bit as well as the lows but its not much better than the F1.

Cheers guys. Im not sure if we are a loud band or not. Im guessing we arent as i never have to push my head hard and whiel the drummer is loud its more cymbals rather thna pure power. It does sound like a Compact is the way to go though.
Not sure I get that reference re the recommendations etc? However, it is working well so far. Needs gigging though. And I will only fully recommend it after this - otherwise it goes back under Alex's policy. We shall see,
Back in your what to get thread us non owners of the compact took a brief, slight bashing for recommending something we didnt own. Glad your happy with it Chris. It looks bigger than i expected. Thats a good thing i guess, and part of the reason it sounds (apparently ;-) so good. When is the first gig with it?

Dont forget to check the sizes. Sometimes the bridge pup is a bit longer than the neck pup. If your only going to buy one pup for the cheap bass make sure you get the right one. Also watch out for the fact that different makes can have the hot and earth wire colours reversed. Its not a big deal, just some thing to watch out for. If the volume drops when both pups are on just reverse the wires from one pup.

Does anyone have the TAB for these chords?
t-did-twelve-bars-of-32nds kind of mentality and ego. And she's young, and has her whole career ahead of her to become 'great' - I think she's acheived a lot in such a short span of time already. Ian
...and she has a nice right tit
Got it, I'll give that a go next practice. Does is make much difference if you use it as a preamp?
One thing i will say is be careful with the Blend knob. Too much and you loose quite a bit of mid range.
I must admit that UL115 is very tempting!
My old UL115 was the best cab i ever played through. The only negative point was it didnt quite cut through at our bigger gigs.
I've had my Compact for a couple of years now Dave. It has a less tiring-on-the-ears sound than the 1212L (much as I love the 1212L too) More weight to the sound, smoother and far more versatile than the 1212L. The Compact doesn't seem to go quite as loud as the 1212L, but it's close, and the sound is fuller and just lovely. Plus, it's lighter. You don't see many Barefaced cabs for sale and when you do, the seller is usually selling to buy another Barefaced product. I prefer a carpeted cab, but the Compact finish is proving to be fairly tough and I can always touch up the finish when it gets well worn. Best part is how other bass players are disbelieving when they see the size of the cab making all that noise. You know you want one. Frank.
Thanks for that post. It sounds like i "need" one, not just want one. Thats not how things normally work is it? Now the toss up is between a compact or OHM's UL115. I know what you mean about the 1212L being tiring, sometimes it sounds a bit to full on. i think i can get away with a cab that quieter although it will take some getting used to as ive been using 12xx cabs for 6 years almost exclusively. Chris. Hows the new cab?

I had one of the original JV serial number Squiers but sold it (well, traded it in at the Bass Centre) a few years ago. The guy in the workshop, (Chris) told me that it was the neck thats the valuable part, apparently they were made in the same factory as the real Fender necks. For what its worth i got £300 trade in, and this was for a bass that cost me £199 but had all the hardware changed to gold Schaller (well, it was the 80's) and a different pup in it. I think the next version is the SQ serial number, not sure what they are worth. My view is that while the basses have definitely gone up in value, from their initial price, they arent worth stupid money like some people have been asking for. The competition in this price area is huge and you can get better basses for less money now. Then again, if some one wants one they will pay for it.

Ive used a BDDI most of last year and this year, until i got my Streamliner. I love the BDDI/MB tone. Unfortunately i dont use my CV Jazz bass much these days as it has my CV P neck on it but its nice to get it out every now and then.
Yes I also had a typo bleeding Ipad too clever...... I found that with the 84's too, but they are great for Dubby type choones I sometimes cover and three piece kind of power trio band I am in. They fill out the bottom in the music, they have a big low end wack and loose no definition. I have not found that with any other pickup everything else always goes muddy.
Yep, im on my iPhone so typing with a finger tip while walking. I think my main issue was the bass rather than the 84's. Ive had the same set of pups (84's and 74's) in both the CV Jazz and a HW-one Jazz and they sounded a lot more articulate and open in the HW-one. To be honest i really only noticed a small difference in the CV between the 84 and 74 but it was a nice difference.

Ive just noticed a typo in my post. It should have read "When i put 84's in my CV Jazz i felt it was a bit too dark" and not 74's.
Cheers bro, just sent him an email now, the 74s sound like they could be winners, are they the same price as the others?
Yes, same price (or at least mine were). I had the 84's and spoke to Andy about not really liking them and he said send them back and he will post a set of 74's out. All he charged me was a bit of postage to get the new ones out to me, he even had them waiting for me before the 84's had arrived back. Great service. Right, this thread has again reminded me i still haven't put my Thumper back in my CV P. Ill do that tonight.
When the bumf says it's a dark thick tone - what exactly does that mean? I have a Squier CV Jazz and could do with a bit more oomph and definition at times. I play in a salsa band so I want a woody, upright kind of sound - so I've installed flats, but I'm wondering if replacing the stock pups with a pair of Wizard 84s might help. I can't find any you tube vids of people showing off their new Wizards so I can't tell what difference it might make - I don't want to buy them and find they're the opposite of what I wanted.
When i put 84's in my CV Jazz i felt it was a bit too dark. To me this means too much low mid bump and lack of sparkle. I felt i lost some definition in the harmonics. The bass itself is quite warm sounding IMO so this didnt help (the same pups in my HW-one sounded very different). Have a word with Andy and ask about 74's . These are in the middle of the 84 and 64. Still with a nice low end thump but with more going on up top. Im also playing weddings/functions etc and i find they work well with this bass.
I sometimes have a problem with gigs that just don't sound right. The consistency - or lack of that you have experienced - concerns me. Have you tried something like a Gramma pad? That might help.
Yes, i always use a gramma pad. To be honest ive always found an inconsistency with whatever rig i use, after all, no two rooms are the same. My problem is the lack of EQ to correct it, plus my cab isnt the ideal partner for this head (apparently). I have no idea if my F1 would have copped any better with the poor sounding gigs, and ive had many poor sounding gigs my other heads so maybe im over reacting. What i can say is that every Marquee gig ive done (6) with the GB its worked perfectly, plenty loud, great chunky tone and good solid low end, and this is whats keeping me with it. Saying that, i doubt ill have many more of those after the wedding season finishes. If i keep the GB ill certainly be looking to get a BF compact to replace the 1212L.
Thanks all and food for thought certainly. Dave, I notice that you happen to have your Streamliner up for sale. Send me a PM if you still want to sell and I will certainly consider yours!
It is still for sale, all the details are in the add. To be honest I keep changing my mind so I'm not actively pushing to sell it now, I'm just going to see what happens but I'd anyone does want it I'm happy to sell. It's a great amp but quite a bit different from my usual MB heads. When it works it works very well but at some gigs I'm finding a more solid state amp works better, especially one whith more EQ for the trickier gigs.
Opinions like the ones expressed here seem a little silly, when she could probably outplay most of us at any given genre. *edit: I didn't mean that. I just meant... imagine yourself on stage next to Tal in front of Jeff Beck, and you're asked to take a solo. She's definitely on it. What does your opinion matter at this point?
Well ive already stated i think she has talent, its the music i didnt like, and yes, she could outplay me with just one broken finger but so could most people on here. I've heard some fantastic playing from members on here that have been much more enjoyable but that doesn't make Tal's playing any less impressive to others. I admit i do have a problem with virtuoso bass playing like in the video posted, i think its boring, and clichéd, a bit like slap. And i count Jaco, wooten etc in with that lot as well, just so you know where im coming from.
