1. Well i dont think im getting anywhere with this. I tried another pup connected to the bass, but not actually screwed in and the result was the same. I also tried an old set fo un coated strings and the result was the same. I forgot to try connecting just one wire, ill try that this week. One interesting thing was at the gig on Sat, a couple of times i noticed the buzzing wasn't happening when i touched the pup by mistake. I use a wireless system so i wonder if that's got anything to do with it. Like i said, it would be nice to get to the bottom of it but its not really an issue. Im having second thoughts about keeping the P Retro anyway. As good as it is i think i prefer to use my Paradriver to do the tone shaping, and having both seems pointless.
2. If it said "A sh*te tone" on the tin then yes it did ;-0 I play a P and its my instrument of choice but that tone last night almost made me ashamed to play one. Bloody awful, then again i've always felt my 8 year old son makes a better noise than SG.
3. I've dealt with Stevie in the past and haven't had any problems. I hope you get it sorted. The mods are pretty good at helping with this sort of thing. Im sure it will be resolved quickly.
4. I've never really undertstood if JL sings like an out of tune trumpet up someone's ass on purpose, or he really can't sing in tune to save his life. I liked the Pisotls but the repetitive, boring rhythms and noises, coupled with JL wailing over the top is a sound that I really can't listen to.
5. Yeah, it certainly wouldnt be the end of the world but seeing as i can buy the correct one that seems the better option.
6. Cheers guys. Cutting one was an option I was hoping to avoid. I think it would look a bit ugly. I'm not OCD but I do like things neat and tidy if possible. Thanks to Walbassist for pointing out the EBS one, I've got one on order.
7.
Is your bridge earthed properly?
It is, in fact I put a new ground wire in last night, just to make sure.
8. Thanks guys. Mr. Foxen. Thanks, I saw the thread about the wires being reversed so tried that without it making any difference. I am using coated strings, DR Black Beauties but these strings have been on the bass for almost 4 months. It's not just when I touch the poles with my fingers, the same thing happens if i touch them with a screwdriver, for instance.. I've tried all combinations of touching various hardware etc, its only the pole pieces and under any circumstances. I will try a different pup on Monday, I'll just wire it in without installing it and report back.
9. I want to power two pedals off my 1 Spot PSU. All the cables ive so far found have 5 leads on them. I really only want two. I was thinking of asking OBBM but thought i would ask here first. cheers.
10. Thanks guys. I think ill probably go the nail Varnish route, at least on the E and A poles. I do sometimes rest my thumb on that part of the pup if playing finger style so better safe than sorry. Lettsguitars. Im not sure its a faulty pup. It didnt happen before and the pup itself hasn't been touched. As you can see, others also have this issue. Its probably down to how its installed but if it was ok before i don't think it should be doing it now, although as the circuit has completely changed i have no idea what i can do to try and remedy it.
11. Just a quick update. I tried reversing the wires as per the other thread but that made no difference. Im not sure what the next step is but ill live with it for now.
12. I got this from Thomanns back in July to replace a BDDI. Its a fantastic box but having recently put a P retro in my bass i dont really need it. I also find its a bit too versatile for what i need. I find i end up playing with the knobs too much;-). Its in fantastic condition, not a mark or scratch that i can see. Its been used live twice, both times sitting on my amp so the foot switch has never had a foot on it and the rubber feet are almost virgin. Im looking for £160 OVNO including postage to mainland UK. It will come ion the mettle box with the manual and sticker. Happy to meet up in central London if thats easier, and anyone is welcome to come and try it out. As ive just brought a MXR compressor i need money to pay for it, so no trades. Cheers.
13. Fantastic, thanks very much. Ill give it a try tonight.
14. Thanks for the reply. It may be common but its not something ive ever noticed before, on any of my P basses. I guess putting the pre amp in has amplified it.
15. I recently put a P retro in my Squier CVP and this itself works fine. No hums or crackles, no (so far) earthing issues etc. The only problems im having is if i touch the pole pieces i get a loud earthing or ground loop type hum. This happens in both passive and active mode, although in passive mode its quieter I have not heard this before, although it might have been there but very, very quiet, to the point where it was never noticeable, not even at gig levels. Now its very loud. I play with a pick most of the time so its not a big issue, but one i'd like to get my head around it if i can. The pup is a Fender 61RI original, and does have the brass plate underneath it. The bridge and shielding in the cavity are both earthed. There is no clicking etc when i touch the strings or bridge, just the pole pieces. Any ideas what i need to look for, or shall i just leave it. I dont want to spend any money on it or get it looked at. Ive spent enough on this already and i am happy to live with it. Ive rewired basses before but never encountered this so im at a loss. Cheers.
16. Great looking bass. my first ever Lakland was a 5501, it looked very boring compared to your bass but it was a dream to play and sounded great. I was almost tempted to get a 5502 earlier this year but couldn't afford it. Enjoy. Ive never had any issues with new gear at my house. Ive gone through all the colours of the rainbow and never have i heard mention of "is that new", "wasn't that a different colour" etc. I guess that's the plus side of having a partner who doesn't pay much attention to you lol.
17. I'm amazed this didnt sell as well. I wonder if the price in relation to it being a Squier didn't help. Ive found in the past that no matter how much you spend on a bass after you buy it people still want to pay the going rate for a stock model. I bet you could sell the P-Retro on it own without much trouble, then lower the cost of the bass.
18. I got the Paradriver end of Aug this year from Thomanns. Ive used it on two gigs and loved it but have recently got a P Retro so dont really need any other tone shaping boxes, but do want a MXR M87 as i want to do some recording soon. Its in al,ost perfect condition, no marks or scratches that i can see, no velcro etc and comes with box and paper work. So, long shot i know but if anyone wants to do a straight swap (UK mainland only) please let me know. The MXR must of course be in similar condition. The Paradriver is not for sale right now as i dont have the funds to pay the extra for the MXR and although i know there are many other great boxes out there its just the MXR i want. Cheers. EDIT: MXR sorted, Para Driver up for sale in new thread.
19. Thanks also from me Ady. Im glad im not doing this gig. Ill pass your reply on to my mate and let them worry about it.
20. Yep, quite often these days. When i first joined this band almost 10 years ago they gave me a CD of covers to learn in two weeks. This i did but obviously in a hurry. Its only when i hear the originals now on the radio etc do i realise im playing them differently. I do sometimes sit down and re learn them, but its more just for something to do rather than to get them spot on.
21. Can i ask how it went? a band i know are also booked to play this venue next week and are a bit concerned. cheers.
22. Unbelievable that this is still here.
23. Well I considered myself a bass player before I got my first bass. I decided I wanted to play bass as it looked easier than guitar so I went and got one and I was then the bass player. Of course I wasn't a good one, then and now, but from the moment I wanted to play bass I was a bass player.
24.
Seeing posts by multi instument players, it got me to thinking....... When do you consider yourself a player? Personally, it is when I can play with my eyes shut. I can do that on a guitar (electric or acoustic) and an electric bass. How about you?
Well i play bass in a gigging band, so i cant see what else i need to do to qualify. Im definitely not a great bass player but im out gigging with my bass and holding down the low end, i'd say thats more qualified than the bedroom bass heroes who know everything there is to know yet never get the chance to show it off.
25.
Well, it beats Mustang Sally and Alright Now I think!!
no question its a nice list to listen to but I doubt they would all fill the dance floor at a wedding though, and thats a big part of being hired.
