Helix Floor/LT/HX/Stomp/PodGo owners' Club - Tips, Ideas & Patches
dave_bass5 replied to Al Krow's topic in Effects
I received my external pedal today. Not a bad purchase for £12. Even came with a short lead. I like that this one is quite low profile, so wont tip over. Fully working with the Stomp (B7K on/of a distortion on/off), and takes up no room in the gig bag. -
One good thing about the Stomp that might not be obvious is you can hook up a cheap (like £10 on Amazon) two way foot switch, which gives you 5 foot switches, all configurable. You can even assign more than one action to each foot switch. This makes it a lot easier to use live. Particularly useful for controlling different aspects of an effect. Ill be using the extra two switches to turn on and off the B7K sim, with the second switch turning on and off the distortion part. Very cool IMO.

I feel the B3n is the better box for live use, other than lack of DI of course. What i really missed was battery operated though.

I had the B3, have the B3n and also the B1on and B1-Four (not really a fan of zoom stuff :-). The B1-Four has been my main home practice box since getting it. The quality of sims and effects are on a par with the B3n, and both a bit smoother and cleaner sounding than the B3 and B1on. More noticeable when using headphones. Having recently got a Helix Stomp the first thing that i noticed was how much more 'real' everything sounded. Im not talking about how close to the real thing they sound, but that everything was cleaner and with more depth to it. The rigs sound more like a real rig rather than something that will pass for one in a mix if that makes sense. Even in headphones there is a nice punch to the rig sim's, and a definite improvement in quality with the effects.

The best thing about my Yamahas (well, one of the best) is how they do the P bass thing well, but without the Fender ‘mud’. The slight modern twist on the P tone is really what’s keeping me playing my P34. It has the character but also a slight bump somewhere that gives my pick playing a bit of finger thump. The 425 sounds slightly more aggressive, but both seem to have the same character in the low end. As for necks, I’m a lover of narrow necks, so when I saw the P34 is only 40mm at the nut I was very happy. After playing it for a few days, and then my Fender P, which is wider but still what I would call narrow at 43mm, I do find the Fender more comfortable to play.

Its to go in the TCE bag, so just needs to be protected from scratches more than anything. It will be in the pocket with leads and other gig 'bits'. My TRS lead is always in the bag anyway 🙂 This is the sort of thing i was thinking about. Just need to measure things up. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Khanka-Hard-DBPOWER-Portable-Player/dp/B0787Z3ZWX/ref=pd_sbs_147_1/260-9369431-7656544?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0787Z3ZWX&pd_rd_r=0822b071-314d-4f7f-8433-db55f958aaa9&pd_rd_w=yx6AL&pd_rd_wg=dqUu7&pf_rd_p=7f9048ad-9bda-4493-8578-13e4eff8da65&pf_rd_r=STXJH754HPC1AX5QXBZ9&psc=1&refRID=STXJH754HPC1AX5QXBZ9 -

Cheers Bas but i think that's too bulky. it doesn't look like it will fit in the front pocket of my TC Electronics bag, along with the few cables in there. Thinking maybe this one though, although ive not checked dimensions yet. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002VPE1Q6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 -

Cheers John but im thinking cheap Chinese case for around £10. The Roqsolid stuff is nice but ive always thought they felt over priced for what they are. -
I agree with @Al Krow, neither of my Yamaha's sound as 'fender' as my Fender. I know its different woods and pups etc, but still, i think think Yamaha has a signature tone that can get a P bass tone, but not a traditional one when put up against a Fender.
-
Well, you were questioning the fact that i didnt like something. Not quite 'asking' but its all good with me.
-
Ok, to clarify, both Squiers had stock pups at the time. Didn't like the VM. Put EMG;s in the VM, still didnt like the tone. The reason i brought this up was in case anyone (actually, just you) says the pup is not to my liking. I have the same pup in my Fender P bass. Now i know its not exactly apples to apple's, but its as close as i can get.
-
Eh? i already said i put a set of EMG's in it and still didnt like it. For the record i have the same EMG in my Fender P bass and love it.
-
I didnt have a bad one, i just didnt like it and all the glowing reviews are obviously based on people liking them 😉 As an example i compared just the neck pup on it to my CVP and the CV had more body to it, and just sounded more 'P' like. It was only the tone i didnt like, the bass was well made and had no quality issues (other than i thought the neck edges were a bit sharp). But if i didn't like it i couldn't possibly recomend it.
-
Haha, no, i wouldn't recommend the VM, but i think these are a different line.
-
Are these the VM PJ basses you guys have? I had i one a few years ago. Never liked it, not even with a set of EMG Geezer Butler PJ pup's in it. To me it sounded quite lightweight with no real body to it. Anyway, the point of my post is to recommend the EMG's lol.

Yeah, I have a few of those hanging around, but after posting g above I think I’d like something a bit thicker, just to give the knobs and screen a bit more protection. -

Getting to grips with this thing now, and still not downloaded the editing software yet. Has anyone got any suggestions for a thin case for the Stomp? Looking for something that will stop it getting scratched when it’s in my gig bag rather than a self contained carry case for it. More like a skin I guess. -
Good result. Always nice to feel appreciated at the end of the night.

New to you, new as in never been owned by someone else or played. To me both those say new bass. Sitting in a warehouse for 3 years, still new. When someone sells something on here and states ‘as new’ , they are talking about the condition, not that its been on a trip in the TARDS lol.

Actually, while we are on the subject of latency and the Stomp. I have no issues with a wireless and the Stomp, but yesterday I plugged the Stomp in to my Megaboom BT speaker (using a cable of course), the delay was horrendous. Totally unusable. Ive used the MB load of times with my Zoom B1-Four (and B1on) without any real issues, so I have a feeling the Stomp has a much higher internal latency, albeit still under what the human ear can hear under normal circumstances. We just need to be careful what’s further down the line
-
Ive just tried this, although I used my Boss WL-20L as the second link. I did noticed a bit of delay. As i play with a pick it’s easy to hear the click acoustically and then the amplified click. Only minor, but it felt like it wasn’t worth doing. The Boss has less latency than the Xvive2, but not by much.
-
I’m really not to fused at the moment, as I’m used to it and still thinking about moving it on at some point (not just yet though), so dont want to mess too much with it. In fact it plays just fine until i pick up a gloss necked bass, and then I notice the difference.
