  1. Ive been using these for years. Ive never noticed them being brighter than other nicks, like Fenders, but im so used to these now that i cant really remember what the others sounded like. I would also say these sound pretty much the same as the Slinky's.

    Which Helix?

Assuming your running order doesn't changed, and you can remember where each patch is before the next song starts 😁

They have their uses i guess, i just dont need that much control yet. I do prefer to treat the patch as a pedalboard though. I like the idea of turning things on and off as and when, but i do have a few 'hidden' blocks that get activated (or deactivated) when other blocks are used.

Ive still to try using snapshots, but you can assign the foot switches to alter various parameters for a certain block. I have one patch set up with 6 variations on the BDDI, just using one block. Some will also add in EQ from an EQ block. Admittedly this is overkill, but it shows how versatile the system is.

Its a nice upgrade. Also the Stomp has a few things built in to each patch that the Effects doesn't, inc noise gate, and also has a global EQ (inc HPF and LPF), so you can save a few blocks right there.
  6. Standard 'Long' is fine. I use D'addario XL's and they work really well on my basses. I had a set of Ernie Ball Slinky's on my P34 and took them off after a couple of days. Not sure why i didn't like them, but i didn't.
  7. To use an overused (in this thread) phrase, horses for courses. We are in a thread about an amp that can cost well under half of what a lot of high end heads cost, and yet most people here love it. Proof that you dont need to go over the top with spending.
  8. At least.....and even then don't listen to me lol My issue is i don’t gig much, or at least haven't been, and rehearsals aren't too regular. Ill get something but might have to wait a few weeks to try it out with the band. As we know, most, if not everything sounds great at home. Then it depends on the room we rehearse in. These are the only times i get to tinker with things in a band environment. Could be by the time i gig i have realised its not for me (as in the case of the BB800). I went through two heads over the past 12 months that never even made it to gigs. For me being comfortable at gigs with my tone is the top priority. It might not be a great tone by other people's standards, but if I'm constantly thinking i need to adjust this or that, i feel its not the right thing to own. The other night with the Fender was the first time in months i just plugged in, left most of the EQ on the amp at noon and just enjoyed the rehearsal. This to me says i have found the right combination......for now. Potato bass. Thanks of the recommendation, but i cant see me ever spending that sort of money on a box of 'magic dust' 🙂

    Which Helix?

Heads up, next year we are going full Helix floor. Just thought id warn you now 😁 EDIT: You as well Paul 😉
  10. Must admit my BB425 is one of the highlights of the year. Amazed at the quality and playability at that price. Agree about them punching above their weight, although the low end market has made huge advances over the past few years. I also got a Stomp this year, but the FX tops it for 'best'.
  11. No problem, i didnt mean to sound rude, just wanted to clear things up and not come across as anti-Quilter.
  12. New gear is always 'the best ever', when you first get it, but once its been tired and tested in the right context, you get a proper understanding of it. If you read my posts in this thread, i said i was really happy with it and couldn't wait to gig it. I then sold it after the gig, so no, not strange at all. I never said it was great or any thing like that as far as i can see, I just said i was happy with it so far, and i dont think i even mentioned the sound or tone, other than i commented it was clearer than my GK, and definitely not as being great. You ned to read a bit more carefully so you dont get the wrong idea. Still, its that last bit that didnt work for me, and the band noticed this as well. It was not a tone i cared for or felt worked well. Various Fender type passive basses were used, playing general covers. I record all my rehearsal and gigs, and it definitely sounds lacking something in all of them compared to with other heads. Should also add, ive had private chats along the way with other members, so although i didnt post any of these concerns ion this thread, it wasn't an instant decision. In fact i started a returns action with Thomanns a week after i got it, but held off as i was still trying to give it a chance.
  13. Maybe Santa can bring them, he seems to have a way of avoiding customs 😭
  14. I got my son (12 at the time) the cheap G4M £150 kit. He loved it at first, but he is also having drum lessons at school, and found the way the snare is sitting was not comfortable and now he doesn't use it at all, other than to hang his uniform on it. He still has drum lessons but never plays at home. Every now and then he asks for a real kit, but the floors in our flat are terribly thin. I cant even use a bass amp at home. Shame as he is quite good, but he has a couple of guitars, which i try and encourage him to spend more time playing.

    Which Helix?

A block is a slot in a patch. A patch in the Stomp can have 6 blocks, 9 in the Effects. The blocks are the components of the patch. Could be amp sim, single effect, mixer block, eq block etc.
  16. As i dont think ill be buying anything else music related this year, i think my best has been the Helix HX Effects. Really happy with it and it makes me smile when i use it. Worst is hard to say, i have drawer full of effects i used maybe once or twice and wont use again. None of them are bad though, i just dont need them.quite a lot of wasted money went in to buying them. Same with the 2 amps ive brought and sold this year. I just didn't like them but there was nothing i hated about them. So although not bad in anyway, my biggest regretful purchase is my Yamaha BBP34. Wish i hadnt bothered, as it made life a bit more complicated, and although there is nothing wrong with it, i just cant settle 100% with it.
  17. We've just started playing Bartender and the Thief. What a great song,
  18. Ok, ill go first. There are plenty of them here already 😎
  19. Mine is just the 800watt head, going in to a Fearless F112, not the combo. Agree, we all like different things, lucky my band also hated me using the BB800 😉
  20. First rehearsal with my new Fender rumble head. Same room ive been using for months. It was like night and day compared to the BB800. The band noticed it straight away. A lot more authoritative and with a nice low end kick. Filled the room with low end much better than the BB800, and the upper notes had the punch i was told the BB800 would give me, but didn't. Its more coloured, but i think this is what i needed to get the F112 sounding bigger. Still clear, but with a depth to it i hadn't had since my GK. A lot more tone options as well. Horses for courses i guess. I sometimes think playing with a pick brings its own problems that finger style doesn't suffer from.
  21. Nah, its too big and heavy. Everything just fits in my old camera bag, and i do this for a reason. I even gave up using a pedal board for the same reason. Anything larger is automatically off my list. Maybe if i was gigging more regular things might change, but what i have now is more than good enough for all my gigs. ..........😂
  22. Yes, i still have my GKMB800, and that too worked better for me over the BB800. I wanted to get something less coloured than the GK, but still with a usable EQ (so not going direct to the power stage) and the Quilter is definitely flater, but i found it a bit too flat. The Rumble is much more to my liking, being in the middle of the GK punch and the MarkBass warmth. At least, to my ears based on 3 hours at rehearsals.

    Which Helix?

I own both a Stomp and a Effects, but chose to vote for the Effects as to me its the most suitable, and the one ill use all the time (at least for live and rehearsals). I did briefly look at the LT, but like you i found the lack of Scribble strips a bit of a negative, mainly as i was looking to get the Effects for these.
  24. Its the BC way..... 🙂 Put it this way, its not perfect, but its definitely a step up from my previous heads. In fact the reason i went for the Quilter was for the added punch/thickening on the notes. I never found that, but the Fender has it in spades.
  25. Ive not seen many Rumble 800HD users posting so i took a chance. Happy i did, although it's still early days.
