What's the best class D bass amp head you've used?
dave_bass5 replied to thebassist's topic in Amps and Cabs
Haha, i’d never accuse DG of offering value for money, but it does seem like a complete package. I’d love to get the MKII VMT version of these amps. I liked the VMTD i had, and use the B7K sim Ultra a lot in my Helix, but at the price they are asking i doubt I could afford it. I know the first gen is a lot cheaper but i like the EQ on the MKII. The rear panel seems full of stuff I’d never ever need but its nice to havre i guess. -

Haha, I’m trying to down size what i take out so cant see me buying anything Amp/Effect related. I love my Fender Rumble, and also my GK heads, so I’m sorted for that. I still have a BDDIv2 and PBDDI, neither get used these days. I wish the GK Legacy 500 was actually 500 in to 4 ohms like most 500watt heads. I’d get that in a heartbeat. -

Ive always had a soft spot for Tech 21 stuff. Ive had a few DG pedals and while I liked most of them i always went back to my BDDI. Never tired any of these heads though. -

There are amps that have a drive channel which is not really much more than a second input stage that can be driven hard and turned on and off. I like this as you keep your basic tone. What i like about the DG and Tech 21 heads Is that they go much further and you actually get a DG or Tech 21 pedal incorporated in to the head. Obviously you have to like that pedal first, but if you do, these type of heads are great to help travel light. -

I got this in Nov last year from Andertons. I’m sure it needs no explanation so i wont bother. Its in good condition, other than a few scuffs on the top. I can supply more images to show these. These happened because i was transporting it in a bag with other gear. No other damage to it . Been used a few times for rehearsals and 1 gig. No issues and FW is up to date. Still have box and all the bits that came with it. You can also see in the photo it’s sporting some custom knobs. I still have the original back knobs as well. Looking for £280 posted to UK mainland, or £275 for a meet up/collection in central london.

Mark Bass used to insist on putting one on Most of their heads years ago, but dropped it when they realised hardly anyone ever uses it. I think it’s more for upright players who use pre amps.

Have you considered the Ashdown OriginAL head? it looks pants, but when i compared it to my Rumble, and mates MB Little Mark Vintage (through his cabs and my CN212 the Ashdown had so much punch and body to it i was a bit of a shock. Then again the MB was very disappointing as well. in fact my mate sent it back -

Pretty much how ive always used MB heads (ive had 3). I have used a preamp in front though. Ive messed about with amps quite a bit over the past few years, and have come to the conclusion that (in my case) the cab makes much more of a difference. -

I’d love to try a MB Fusion. I had the 800 watt version fort two hours. It arrived from Thomann’s damaged so got sent straight back without me even plugging it in. I regret being so hasty. I did look in to getting one earlier this year but prices seemed too close to the newer Legacy heads (not the fusion version) so went that route...and ended up sending that (actually 3) back. I just love the from factor of the MB heads. So small and powerful. -

Just to close this down. I emailed Hipshot the above link and they very, very kindly sent me a set of the correct ones free of charge. Amazing service. -

For me its my Fender Rumble 800 HD head. Its not perfect overall, but it has more things i like and hardly anything ill never use. I like it so much that i put it up for sale and then withdrew it. I am torn between this and my MB800, which is noticeably smaller and has a punchier tone, but for now ill stick with the Fender. -
