1. hello, I have the Zoom and its fine - I mostly just use the amp modelling, tuner and the drum machine in it. I'm not fussed about synth bass or phasing or any of that stuff. I tried the boss but it seemed a bit plastic-ky.
2.
The Zoom B2.1u gets a lot of love around here, though if that's too pricey and you don't need the expression pedal or USB the B2 covers the same ground. No looping though, unfortunately.
+1 worth spending time reading the manual to get the best.,
3. I've had carpal tunnel syndrome and it isnt nice. WHat happened to me was that my hand started to feel colder, and I got tingling in my middle and ring fingers. The solution after much physiotherapy was an intra wrist injection with Benisol (a steroidal anti-inflammatory) - we have a specialist hand clinic near us and it took a long time to get thgrough the medidal hurdles. The alternative to Benisol is an operation where they cut and restitch your wrist ligaments. I have found that by altering my playing position and using lighter strings, it hasnt flared up again.

Decisons...

I'd stil go with the VMJ - I very, very seriously looked at one, before I bought a Fender CIJ jazz off OldGit. Reidys do VMJs cheaply.
5. they are very comfortable to play - I was astonished by mine ... go for it.
6. I thought it was summed up by three players. 1. John Taylor (if I end up one quarter as good as him, I'll be happy) 2. Spandau Ballet (see True) one of the Kemps? 3. Chap in Talk Talk (Paul Webb?) who was kind of a mixture of the two above IMHO yet somehow unique sounding.
7. I would think it was - I did have some pickups where the white one was hot and the grey one was earth - but your thought seems logical. I dont think you'll ruin it if you get it the wrong way round

Fender Jazz S1

I have a jazz - I found I can get that P sound from my Zoom B2.1U using patch standard C6
9. it seems that one lead was making things much worse, however it is still quiet with both full on (the RWRP trait mentioned above), and a little bit noiser with either pickup turned down a little. I was able to turn it up quite loud (througha 30w amp admittedly) - I think I will need to investigate copper shielding anyway.
10. they dont sell it any more - try this though http://www.kookykards.com/shop/index.php?m...roducts_id=1523
11.
I got mine from Allparts - comes as a self-adhesive sheet or roll; very "Blue Peter"! And like hamster said it should be earthed, the jack socket outer pole or bridge earthing wire is handy to connect to. I couln't get the paint at Maplins except the stuff you repair car rear windscreen heater elements with - that the one?
No, white can, dark green print. paint comes out dark gray "electrostatic shielding paint" I think - I'll look at the site to see if they still do it.
12. very interesting, where did you get the copper shielding? I know you can get shielding paint from Maplin. My jazz is quite noisy.
Hey Simon I have a few old copies of Razzle, er, I mean Bass Player and Bass Guitar Magazine I can send you if you want .. Won't make up for the noisy pups but you are welcome PM me your addy again
There could be a number of reasons for it, oldgit - its not going to make me throw your old Jazz through the window. They have backissues on the www.bass-musician-magazine.com site now, but thanks for the offer.
14. thanks for the info chaps, I'll need to check my bass's behaviour. I've only noticed the noise recently so it may well be postitional - its not slightly closer (but not very close) to a light switch. Turning the switch off made no difference. I thnk it was quiet with both volumes up full, and noisier when one was backed off. I will try getting some shielding paint.
15. thanks for that - I will double check the exact behaviour that it gives given what the second poster said. What capacitor would I change it for ? I presume I can buy them from Maplins - they're not special in some way? Tone control doesnt seem to do very much anyway. I have no idea whether they're RWRP pickups (sorry) - how would I find out?

mags

thanks , I wanted a paper one really as sometimes its just nice to sit down and read- I spend all day looking at a screen. I will look at www.bass-musician-magazine.com though.
17. I have a japan 62 RI jazz that as far as I know is stock. its really noisy, I know single coils are a bit prone but surely not this much. The two pickup volume pots seem to affect each other. With the neck on full, its noisy then adding the bridge removes that to an extent until that gets to full volume then its gets noisy again. The earth wire to the bridge is in place - I know it isnt the amp or cable as my ray copy isnt noisy using the same setup. I know I could get some shielding paint from Maplins - apart from that, any suggestions? Using my Zoom b2.1 NR function at setting 9 kills the noise. My ray only needs 3 to make it silent.

mags

can anyone recommend one? I saw "Bass PLayer" in Smiths yesterday and it was bundled with Guitar Player (oh so interested int that one) - I do find US mags a bit US-centric, and obviously ads for stores in Green River Missouri have a limited appeal - can anyone recommend a more UK focused mag?
19. have played one (but bought a used CIJ instead). Very nice, very playable was my view.
20. I have a sunburst jazz (CIJ) and its 3 colour both front and back.
21. well done to OldGit for spotting this one. I'm not planning to change anything on the 62 RI bass, so am unable to help you directly - i like it just the way it is. There is a site called www.pickguard.com (or somesuch) who will make them up from tracings if they cant supply one. You could try them? Also try ebay.
22.
I'm after a nice 4 string (yes, that's right a 4 string) jazz bass, to inject a 70's type vibe into my playing for my one band. I like the Fender RI jazzes they look pretty cool.
I have one, the 62 RI - its very very comfortable
23.
Yeah Im really looking forward to this. They seem to be hitting it big time now with the release of the new album. Well worth checking out the tunes on myspace.
slightly off-topic - does anyone know how Michella gets that "thick" bass sound on Moseley Shoals? Particular model, or amp? Or is it just EQ?
24.
Maple necks are normally lacquered so like the man says you will need to refin after pulling the frets out anyway so just use a tougher laquer.
You can get some two-part yacht varnish which sets diamond hard in about an hour. I know someone who used it on a staircase, which must surely take more punishment than a neck.
