  1. Hmmm... I wonder - I bought the bass (whole) from an academic in London. It wasn't martthebass as far as I know and I think the seller was the original commissioning purchaser of the neck - it's unusual insofar as it's a gloss sprayed black graphite neck
  2. thanks for the lovely comments - I have the bass in my hands now - balance is excellent (standard J really, though with the graphite neck and ultralites, there's no dive whatsoever - either sitting or on a strap). Weight, as close as I can get it on a digital scale, is 8.8lbs (so around 8lbs 12ozs). You'd be very welcome to come to Manchester
  3. Now £525 collected with Fender gig bag or £560 including overnight shipping (in an ABS hard case) in the UK Status necked fretless Jazz 4 - luthier built alder body with natural gloss finish and custom Status neck (21 positions with overhanging board - black gloss finish). I bought this to use whilst my own fretless was away for some work. The latter is now on its way back so I'm selling. Though I'd honestly rather keep it: I'm not a fan of hyperbole in ads but this is very genuinely the best fretless I've ever owned or played (and this includes Fender Masterbuilt and two Wals). Superb, very low action and fabulous playability. It plays better than my other fretless (considerably better, that's why the other has been away). Condition is mint - I can't find any marks anywhere. Specs are: Luthier built, centre-jointed 2-piece alder body - gloss transparent finish Custom Status neck (Precision flat profile with 1.625" nut - apparently, this cost over £550 alone when Status was taking custom orders) Tuners - Hipshot Ultralite Pickups - DiMarzio (DP123 I think) Hardware - Fender (bridge, bell-plate and neck plate) Strings - currently very light (35-95?) rounds - very comfortable - nickels I think Weight is 8.8lbs (about 8lbs 12ozs) and balance is very good - the top horn strap pin sits above around 11th 'fret' and the ultralites imply there's no neck-dive at all I have around £600 in this so think £550 is fair. Though, honestly I doubt that you'll find a more playable fretless at pretty much any price. IMO opinion, this also looks lovely and the J shape is very comfortable The bass is in Manchester and collection would be ideal. Initially, I had only a Fender gig bag and was unable to ship. However, I've been able to source an ABS hard case (in very good used condition) and a box and can now courier within the UK. So, the selling price above (£550) includes a gigbag if collected. I can only ship with the hard case and this will add £25 to the total. Shipping should be around £15 so the total cost for the bass, shipped in a hard case will be £590. Following a recent disaster with an amp, shipping must be at the buyer's risk and collection remains the preferable option... I'm happy to ship with insurance if this helps (though again, there's an additional cost here). Any questions, please just ask I’ve added a couple of images of the fretboard extension to 21 positions. This also shows the very shallow radius of the board - almost flat. For me, this adds to the comfort. I’ve added some further and better images but please let me know if you need anything specific
  4. I'm not a massive fan of hyperbole in ads so just the facts (err, and a bit of opinion... ) Candy Tangerine Precision - luthier constructed from a combination of an MJT reliced body (Alder I think - see MJT at https://www.mjtagedfinishes.com) and a Limelight reliced P neck (1.625 nut). IMO the relicing is of a very high-quality and looks authentic (in terms of both wear and checking). I picked this up on here around a year ago, spent around £150 on it, put it in my office and then it's hardly been played (I try to stay out of the office and when I'm there, I'm frequently too busy to play). On receipt, the bass played very well, though the action was at medium height and I prefer it extremely low. So, off to Jack's Instrument Services in Manchester to have the action taken right down: some fret-work, a full-set up, re-string and a shim - I also had some of the finish removed on the back of the neck, then a light oil to get that US Lakland style slickness. All this at a cost of £130 - I can provide the receipt. The result, IMO is stunning - super-low action, incredibly clean and fast all over the board and sounds like a classic early P. Specs: Light alder (?) body (MJT) with deep contouring - relic finish Candy Tangerine Neck - P Shape with 1.625" nut (Limelight) - very dark rosewood board Scratchplate - I'm told by the original commissioning owner that the plate is an original 1964 from his own '64 Fender. The plate has an extra hole that has been filled. I can't verify the provenance though it looks right Limelight electronics, pick-up and hardware Strung with brand new D'addario 35-95 Nickel rounds The original ad is here (I'm hoping that the original owner is OK with this) I have just over £800 in this so think that £690 is reasonable. The bass plays beautifully well and, again in my opinion, looks immensely cool (though you can be the judge here). The bass is in Manchester and comes with a basic soft padded case (not bad but not immensely protective). Please note, I don't have the pickup and bridge covers. I can ship but at the buyer's cost and risk (and there is a risk here without a hard case). Any questions please just ask - the original images are probably better than mine but I can get more if required.
  5. Just bought a gorgeous bass from Claude - everything was perfect and the shipping was unbelievably fast. The bass is exactly as described if not better. Claude was a delight to deal with in every respect - rapid communications, rapid action and extremely honest. An excellent member of our community and one with the greatest integrity. Thanks!
  6. Fantastically easy and very pleasant deal with Tony - fabulous communications and conversation throughout. Very highly recommended as an upstanding and incredibly knowledgeable member of the community - thanks!
  7. Lovely bass - the top is gorgeous - and a lovely story to go with it. Not the same level but Phil Oakey was in the shop when I went to collect my Status back in the mid '80s. I'd concur with CameronJ - excellent taste (is that a Moody strap in the image - only the best all round!)
  8. Absolutely stunning and a ridiculous bargain in my opinion. I’ve had two Overwater PJs and both spectacular in every way
  9. Four string set of short-scale flatwound strings. Cut for a two a side head. I've no idea what these are but they're in good condition and don't appear to have seen a lot of use. They're nice and clean too - 'silks look a bit used but aren't tatty. These came off a fairly high-end bass so I doubt they're cheap (possible La Bella - somebody may be able to tell from the wrap and silks?). £8 with UK shipping included
  10. Strangely timely as I re-strung one of my short-scales with 5250xl strings at the weekend (I use these more than anything else on short-scale basses). They don't have silks at either end which is a bit of a problem for me as the string retainer on one of my basses has gold plate and I want to avoid scraping it. There are two solutions (at least). One is to use heat shrink wrap (the kind of thing that electronics engineers might use), or just wrap yourself. Standard sewing thread is fine in my experience and it takes around 30 seconds per string to wrap carefully at the ball end. Sealing is a bit tricky (tying knots is difficult), though a little blob of super glue should hold the end of the thread. I used the latter option last weekend (a rather fetching deep blue) and was very pleased with the result. Just don't overdo it and extend the wrap over the saddles. I used TI rounds as a template and they have around 0.75" of wrap from the ball. I don't know if embroidery silk would be a better option. I might try it. Whatever, nice to have the option of your preferred wrap colour from the rainbow of threads on offer
  11. a really easy, fast deal with hooky_lowdown on some strings - everything exactly as it should be from a pillar of our community - thanks!
  12. I did own this - it's an absolutely fantastic instrument - real boutique quality. IMO, an excellent price indeed!
  13. Looking forward to the pics of this - my favourite of all the lovely bass amps I've heard, tried and owned. Truly majestic. I have a slight preference for these over the 751 (revised tone-stack included). Do I need another? I've had three and still have one of them - one of the few pieces of gear that's actually hung around!
  14. Long-shot on BC but worth a try (the ad is on Club Alembic too). A used DS-5R power supply in good, gigged condition and perfect working order. The unit has some superficial marks but no dents or bends! Comes with the Alembic cable for Series basses - this is in perfect working order but could benefit from a little care - a screw is missing from one of the connectors (see images). Original build date is around 2008. I can ship this in the UK for £10 - please ask for further afield
  15. An Alembic Supercord ASC 20 (20 foot) Active Cable. I've been using this with a passive bass and it's excellent for guitars too - essentially, it gives you 'more' of the inherent/baked-in tone of whatever you put through it. The cord doesn't really add anything, it simply ensures that nothing (or less) is lost. Alembic's own explanation appears on the reverse of the card in an image below. I'm playing actives almost exclusively and virtually no guitar at all so this can move on. These are outrageously expensive - £395 in the UK - and outrageously beautifully constructed (the box is made from purple heart, flame maple and ebony) - high-quality Gotham cable and GH silent plugs. This example looks like new and has been used very infrequently and only in a home environment (it's mint). I suspect that there's a less expensive way of achieving the same result, but if it's got to be Alembic (and it needs to look as beautiful as it sounds), then this is the one. Price includes next day UK shipping with insurance. For Europe, drop me a note. Possibly a long-shot on Basschat so this is up on Club Alembic too.
  16. A Lexicon MPX G2 multi effect unit in extraordinary condition for its age (and still with the manual!) There's some very minor rack marking but this is a very clean unit overall and works perfectly (I've taken some images with flash to highlight any marks, but these really are minimal). I'm sure that if you're looking, you'll know what this is and what it does. A very expensive pro rack unit when launched and something that changed the face of guitar/bass effects (for those that could afford one). Whilst the unit was designed fundamentally for guitar, it works beautifully with bass... dare I venture, somewhat better in most modes than the Line 6 units I've tried, including the Helix. Really a pro unit - I tried it up against my Helix Stomp this morning and it blew the latter away in almost every respect - the quality and depth of effects is outstanding and the reverbs are of a different order (you'd expect this with Lexicon anyway). The Stomp is staying as it's a convenient package and good enough for live/rehearsals - I just don't lug too much rack gear around anymore. The Lexicon has multiple ins/outs and midi connections - all explained in the manual. As far as effects are concerned, and programmability, there isn't much it can't do (really well). A vintage classic with a well-deserved and highly positive reputation. Collection in Manchester is good, though I can ship for around £10 to the UK. Any questions, please just ask.
  17. I know that there was one on sale here in a shock rack and that weighed-in at 70lbs+ - I suspect that 40lbs is closer to the mark here (without the case). I've always preferred SS power sections (and front-ends for that matter - it took me a long time to work this out), but I'd absolutely love this. What a very beautiful monster

  19. Me too re Fusion (F1) but the Armourdillo looks like a good and inexpensive option. At the other end of the spectrum (big, heavy, not inexpensive), I’ve been massively impressed by SKB’s 3i bass series. A real and useful alternative to Anvil with full milspec

  21. Lovely bass and incredibly light for this vintage - these have a tone like no other J in my experience
