1.
I bought a couple of editions of a Bass Magazine that came with a cd and was U.K based (can't remember the name) but it had loads of transcriptions and tutorials in it and was supposed to be every 3 months but it seemed to just disappear it was a few years ago now but it was really good anyone remember it? How many issues did they do?
Were they 'Total Guitar' Bass Specials? I've got 3 of them somewhere, and they all came with cover CDs (which is a very good idea). I know Flea and Rob Trujillo were both cover stars. I think they got Roger Newell in to help out with it, which would help make it familiar to old 'Bassist' readers.
2.
dunno what that black thing between the pickup is there for
I think that's a third pickup, maybe for hum-cancelling duties?
3. I'd go for the sadowsky because they seem a bit rarer, though I'd be flipping grateful for either!
4. I heard this song and thought "that's a bassline I've got to get my hands around!" Written by Ashford & Simpson etc.. wiki notes Anyway, does anyone have any notation or tab for it? Or links to either? Heck, even a chord chart would be a start! Also, as stated in the wiki (above) there was a motown cover, but who's responsible for the bass on the Marlena Shaw version? I've not heard any of the other versions so please don't scald me if I've made any gaffes. Nice one.
5. Whoa there gents,
The individual pups or both S-1 stylie?
I mean series/parallel for each individual pickup. I should have seen the S1 answers coming... I have some dimarzio DP123s with a series/parallel switch for each pickup, and I was wondering if there were any alternatives to Dimarzios out there? I dug out the old 'bass player jazz pickup shootout' last night and not that many of them seemed to fit the bill. Thanks.
6. someone got a right bargain there! unfortunately it wasn't me.
7. What a turd! 7 bids already!!! There's one born every minute.
8.
Maybe one way of recovering some of the value would be to keep the old parts and put it back stock before selling it.
You'll probably make more dough if you revert it to original before selling it. That way the new buyer can pimp it up their way, and you can keep or sell the rude-ass bits you pimped it with!
So I'm talking myself into pickup replacement. Just need to decide which ones.
I know dimarzio make a 5 string jazz set (ultrajazz 5) that can be wired for series and/or parallel wiring, which is a nice option. They're about £50 for the set from the USA (though you'll have to pay a couple of £ for shipping), which I don't think is that bad cash-wise.
9. Come on guys, don't make me drop kick the kitten...
10. I've got a few PJ bases (well, 3), and I think that tonally they're very versatile. It's quite a common upgrade for a P bass because it's a good upgrade for a P bass. Or so I reckon.
11. It looks tasty indeed, but dropping new PP3 batteries in before every gig would wear thin with me very quickly.
12. Now then, Can any basschatters advise me as to which jazz bass pickups on the market can be wired for individual series/parallel operation? I know the dimarzios can (ultra jazz & model j), but I can't find any others that allow this option. Share your wisdom with me! Thanks in advance.
13. I remember Sony brought out a 1GB minidisc and accompanying recorders. Would've been alright for multitrack digital recording!
14. It sounds like I may have this problem in reverse. Mine is fine when it's turned on, but when it's turned off the signal disappears. At least I can still use mine though, I suppose.
15.
I wonder could you send a collective vote of thanks from BassChatters, might encourage him to pop in from time to time. Great to have input from that calibre of musician.
Good call jakesbass; let's get some big hitters on board.
16.
Answers on a postcard. There's a huge clue in there, though.
Levin?
17.
Just got this from ebay a couple of days ago...
Did you snag a bargain? If so, how much did you shell out for it; if you don't mind me asking? I've got a tribute L2500 myself, identical to yours other than a maple fretboard! I like the natural finish.
18.
What's with the 'HiMass' bridges though?
The latest American Standards have the HMV (high mass vintage) bridges, so maybe squier are trying to make their wares resemble their well-heeled bretherin a little more closely. The HMV bridge must surely be an improvement over the bog standard 'bent plate' bridge on the normal squiers.
19. That jazz looks flipping sweet! I can see my arsenal of cheap(ish) basses growing yet again. Squier will be happy if they're as well received as the vintage modified series. Has anyone got any prices on these yet? **edit: $299 seems to be the figure bandied around online regarding prices. I can't wait.**
20. When you know the part well enough to play it in your sleep, then you'll be about as well prepared (musically) as you're going to be. The nerves will subside as you get more used to playing in front of audience. On a different note, I always take a bottle of water to glug on, and a beer towel to mop up when I accidentally pour it all over myself. Good luck.
21.
That's just what I don't want to read having just bought a Squier Affinity!
I wouldn't get too hung up over it. The lead guitarist in my old band got a squier affinity tele for £109 new, and it played/looked/sounded really good. It immediately took over as his main axe; he had guitars costing three times what his squier did! If you've got a good squier (like my mate) be happy about it. A useable bass for not that much dough is what we all want.
22.
Hey guys, does anyone have or have you experienced the Sadowsky outboard preamp/di pedal? I'm ordering a new American Standard Precision soon & was thinking of the Sadowsky outboard pre instead of messing with the bass adding preamps, etc.
There's quite a few pedal preamp/DI boxes out there. Obviously the sadowsky is at the nicer end of things, but have you considered John East's STMP-01 for about £30 less than the sadowsky? It has more bells and whistles than the sadowsky, although that may not be what you'r after.
23. I've hot rodded a couple of squiers, and the results have been very encouraging. At least with a squier p bass you can mod it pretty easily as the components (pickups, tuners, bridge, nut etc..) are standard sizes. Many manufacturers offer upgrades for these at varying prices. As stated earlier though, if there's nothing holding you back with your bass as it currently stands; leave it alone.
24. Chuck Rainey's done a book on it, though I doubt it'll have tab in it: chuck's chording
