I don't think there will be any new ones. These guys ^ were purported to have broken new ground when they were younger. All I generally see these days are people breaking the same new ground that the guys above did. There's a finite amount of sensible new ground, and I think we're more or less at that point.
But music is changing and evolving all the time, are you just thinking of the old genres and not taking account of new avenues for bassists?
Will it be someone from a band , or someone from Youtube (or whatever it will be called in 30 years time) who play covers ? Some of them get hundreds of thousands of views
Christ I hope it's a real bassist in a real band!
I'm afraid it's over. Remember those 70's local news films of George Formby fans playing their ukuleles in some hotel room in Lytham St. Annes? That's us!
You depressing bastard!

Who are we going to be celebrating in thirty year's time from the current and recent crop of new bassists as bass heroes and innovators? Who will be elevated to the status of people like Jaco, Entwistle, Geddy, Mark King, Stanley Clark, Chris Squire, Robbie Shakespeare? People who aren't bassists actually talking about them with glowing eyes and hearts.
Sorry, but I think that anyone using backing tracks is taking the piss, cheating and ripping off the audience, if you're not good enough to play it live then don't play it. Supported The Rockin' Berries not so long ago, not only did they turn up late, but insisted on using their own P.A. just so the could use backing tracks. they ended up playing only a 30 minute set of 60s covers, not even their own hits, all with backing tracks and still walking away getting their full pay. At the same venue the following year, we supported the Abba tribute band Abba Arrival. Totally mimed the whole way through, full band as well. Pointless, unless they were incapable of actually playing it live. Both bands won't be playing at that venue again If you have to use backing tracks to make yourselves sound good, then give up and let those who can play live do the gigs.
Jesus honestly, what a ridiculous narrow-minded and ill-conceived attitude.

Ok at the risk of looking like a dick for a number of reasons, here are two tracks from the same gig. First is all live and improvised around a loose structure, the second is with a backing track containing loops, percussion and backing vocal on, the full band of vocal, drums, percussion, bass, keys, and sax is all playing on both. I know they are different songs but is the vibe lost on the backing track one? https://soundcloud.com/silddx/london-zulu-cora-player-live https://soundcloud.com/silddx/london-zulu-may-2012-umlhalho
As a punter (and clearly I'm not supposed to notice these things) I prefer people not to use backing tracks. This informs my opinion as a player too. If you want strings, get some strings players in. If you want a horn section, go get one. Want keys? You know what to do. Much better sounding and visually engaging than a backing track. I'm not looking down my nose at anyone who wants to use them, but it's not how I like to see business done.
Sorry mate, this is mostly nonsense. And you are looking only at western instrumentation and ignoring very obvious impracticalities. One of my bands is a six-piece African-electro-dance outfit and we use backing tracks/triggers for percussion and melodic loops, and complex backing vocals. We have a drummer and a percussionist, and sax, keys, bass, vocals, but the music needs the extra textures of the backing tracks. We kick arse live, we look busy on stage, and we get people dancing, they couldn't care less if we have backing tracks. Also, the backing vocals are our former lead vocalist who died three years ago (her daughter now sings lead), so unless you can think of a way of getting dead people to sing and dance, we are kinda stuck with the backing tracks.
It's a "volute" which is there to add strength to a supposedly weak point in the neck where it transitions to an angled headstock. On a well made multi-laminate neck it should be unnecessary from a structural PoV and there simply because the luthier thinks it looks good.
Is that the biggest volute you've ever seen? It should have a bloody base camp on it. Other than that it looks like an interesting instrument, I quite like the look of it.
Just got my lefty custom-made faux brushed-gold jazz bass pickguard delivered. Made by the Bass Doc and it is excellent.
Awesome, that looks gorgeous! They are wickid aren't they. I've just sent Horrid a drawing of my Lion Head PG for my new Jag I won at the SE Bass Bash. I can't wait! Airbrushing the black detail is going to be interesting, will have to think about how I'm going to mask it.
I favour easy-playing basses, but seeing as Jamerson's bass was supposedly virtually unplayable and an absolute tip that argument doesn't early hold much water, does it? And Macca's and Jaco's weren't much better. As for "some pretty bookmatched bullshit", seems like a perfectly reasonable reason to buy one to me. It's no secret you're not much of a fan of custom basses; I'm not much of a fan of Fender Jazzes, but that doesn't mean I get to decide the criteria for buying one.
Yeah I know, I had one of those Tired of Being Mr F*cking Nice moments -
I was wonderimg where you got those gloves from. I have developed eczema on my fingers that comes and goes and guess what helps inflame them.....So i need to start using gloves to play. I think the ESP i bought came with cleartones. They are good if it's the same ones. Is the company owned by one of the everley bros?
Hi all, This is my first posting. Has anyone out there ever played with a group of strings - ie violin, cellos. I'm playing with a group of cellos at the moment and am not happy with the sound of my bass with those instruments. I'm using an older fretless Bass Collection. It's very comfortable to play, but the sound isn't right. I wonder about changing pickups, or looking for another bass altogether. The sound needs to be very centered on the note, so no "wah" of any kind. Any advice?
Welcome. Thank you for spelling 'advice' correctly I play in a weird pop band with violins. I used a fretted Fender Jazz through a POD X3 LIVE. I use the volume pedal a lot to get a cello-like attack in various parts of the songs that I feel merit that kind of sound. A new bass or new pups won't help you I don't think. Can you explain why you want the particular sound you have in your head?
