Interesting jazzy covers of rock or pop tunes?
xilddx replied to Paul S's topic in General Discussion
It would be rude not to give dirty loops a mention in this thread ...
Baby is quite simply f***ing awesome. -
That Jackass programme has got a lot to answer for . If someone did that to one of my basses they would find it a life-changing experience.
They're nice posh kids, they wouldn't do that without permission from it's owner Still a bunch of f***ing donuts though.
Supposedly the bassist knew and was happy with them doing it.
I wondered if that might be the case, therefore the bassist is a bit of a bell piece as well as his bandmates.

Science? Marketing? Or just a load of old Bollock?
xilddx replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
It seems odd to me that we have a forum of mostly amateurs (when it comes to bass building) slagging off someone who has been doing it as a career for quite a few years. i.e. "I can't understand how tapping a piece of wood with a hammer can help predict its tone in a guitar, so therefore it must be wrong". Are these the same armchair experts that shout their valued advice to the professional players while watching Man. U. V. Chelsea on the telly? It may well be a load of old bollocks, but I personally would not venture to slag someone else off when I don't know any better myself. Also I agree that he gets a bit muddled in places, but so might I if my boss said "explain your job on video". I also agree that with an electric guitar tone can be manipulated in many ways, which can reduce the effect of woods, but as a general principal in life (IMHO) its best to get the fundamentals right and build on that. I.e. build on rock rather than sand. And on the technical side of hitting it with a hammer. This is a common and accepted technique when determining resonances in machine tool structures (though monitored by accelerometers rather than by ear).
You've heard of summat called marketing and public relations, right? -
labelling people on here 'a bunch of weekend warriors' seems dumb and disrespectful to me!
Yep.
The clear gloss on the neck has been applied. I've also rolled the fingerboard edges to give the neck a played-in, comfortable feel. Here's some pics showing how it'll look when completed
Absolutely beautiful! Although my taste would dictate dark tort
I am confident I speak for many of us in saying that if I was intimidated by people who could play better than me then I'd have to not be here at all. You are missing what really happened here which was that the OP held up a badly executed and somewhat unmusical performance as an example of greatness and, when some of us disagreed with his evaluation, things got sensitive. So, what you perhaps ought to have said is "It seems that some people are intimidated by anyone disagreeing with them".
I completely agree, it was an absurd statement from Pete. Who the f*** wants to hear a competitive musician? And it's only competitive musicians who feel 'intimidated' by someone else's skill and ability. There are tons of them on youtube slapping the sh*t out of their instruments in meaningless, artless displays of stupidity. From my own experience and that of others I know, amazing displays of musicianship only serve to inspire those who are interested in expressing themselves rather than making them intimidated.

S'funny init. We can all disappear up our own arseholes by saying 'it's subjective, it's just an opinion' but what do we learn from this? Only that everything subjective has value to someone. However, I don't buy that sh*t, because if it is true, then total crap has value. Great art does not come from nothing, it comes from study, education, philosophy, attitude, history, imagination, perception, vision .. then the artist has to develop the skills to execute their vision. If your music tutor told you your technical execution or your composition needed working on, would you tell them it's all subjective? That your string rattles and missed notes are subjective? You know when you are lying to yourself because you know what you did was no match for your vision. Either that or you are limited in your perception and listening skills. I would guess that Simon Fitzpatrick (the bassist in the OP) would argue that his performance of the piece was substandard, and that any reference to competition with Vic Wooten is completely irrelevant and against all his principles. And that even though the audience seemed to enjoy his solo, he would agree he could have played it much better. I have his email address, I might even ask him
I almost stopped a short way in, as the slapping was awful (however skillful). However, I actually enjoyed a lot of the fingerstyle stuff. It was very very busy, but in some ways that suited the machine gun velocity of the vocals. Then he slapped, tapped and did chords which seemed to be more if a 'look what I can do' exercise, rather than playing what was best for the song.
Yep, same as what I felt. He did some really tasteful stuff counterbalanced with some sheer tastelessness. There were a couple of the fingerpicked phases he did which got me all excited, really cool.
If the shoe fits...
Ahh, that's why you were such a long time
Wow, you're really confused mate. I could care less about people agreeing with me. It's about knowledge and taste and understanding and appreciation. I guess you missed that point, but I guess you have to understand it in the first place.
That all you could come up with after such a lengthy dump?
Here's the trick - you simply use a single piece of masking tape which covers above the edge. Then, use a small file (or something similar) to rub along the covered edge. The file wears away the masking along the sharp edge. You then simply peel off the excess, lwavibg you with neat masking right up to the edge of the headstock. I'll post video clip later showing what I mean
Brilliant idea! thank you!
He makes me wonder why he posts many things!
I ain't saying nuttin
-
Ha ha. Yeah i agree. That's what it's all about in the end!
It really is just about various shades of beauty. That is of course subjective, but I think lowender is more interested in, or can only judge a player based on, highly eveloved technique. Which still makes me wonder why he posted that video in the OP
-
Very nice but when i see these i always wonder why they don't just play guitar instead!
Yes I totally agree, but the guy (he's a BC member) does play some awesome bass in his band too. This is just an extension of what he normally does. He really does have superior tone and ability, but above all he gives what he does some real beauty. I can't stand solo bass normally, and yes, a good classical guitarist would be able to do this more effectively and it would sound even nicer, I posted it because sibob invoked a solo bass soundclash

Beautiful tone, composition and execution, the antithesis of the video Lowender posted in the OP. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC2i_04z8XY
This thread is so typical of so many message boards and a microcosm of mentalities. Anything unknown is almost never appreciated. Success breeds success. You can't argue with it just as you can't defend failure. And there's another emotion at play. Fear. When someone does something beyond one's capabilities, it creates a defense mechanism. There's an instant self protection mechanism that goes into play. It's called "finding fault." It allows us to rationalize the situation in our minds and convince ourself that there's no threat. It elliminates the need to think that there are others who exceed. If someone is famous -- they're a hero. We "know" them. They're friends. This is why people are so enamored of celebrity. But in all the time I've been on message boards, I can't think of a single time someone unknown was universally accepted, no matter how great they may be. There's always a few people who will find fault. I have no problem with critiqing. I do it plenty. But falling into cliche's to create distance in an effort of not have to appreciate something is just lame. This thread reminds me a guy I knew who sa he was disappointed in the Collesseum because it was "small." lol Look, I may not want Rembrandt pictures on my wall. That doesn't make Rembrant sh*te. The whole purpose of presenting this post was to share a moment of someone who so obviously has extraordinary ability-- at the thing we all do and claim to love. And what's the reaction? Noodling? W*nking? Unmusicial? Boring? That's not clever. It doesn't make you sound "above it. " That's just ignorance. Reinforced by the ignorance of others. Even if you HATE it, anyone with ears must know that the person's skill level is phenomenal. Even if you don't praise it, trying to knock it down just demonstrates an obvious insecurity. I see no need for that. I think some people need to reevaluate their role as musicians. If you can only embrace what is within your comfort zone you will neither improve nor most likely be very creative. Art is seeing beyond the norm. It's a vision of a better life. But in some cases, you can show someone the cure for cancer and they'll find fault with it. Not everyone -- but enough people to make it unpleasant for everyone.
You talking bout yourself here, right? The fact is, you posted a video of a guy who played a pointless, soulless solo piece, and played it badly, you claimed he was amazing and better than Vic Wooten (who isn't my taste, but he's one of the most accomplished players on the planet) and now you're pissed off because people don't agree with you. Go and have a sh*t and a think.
Hard to avoid some embellishment, even if it's a couple of ghosts or a brief stop, or something! Though it would depend largely on what sort of drugs the drummer brought with him.
Amen to that

Looks beautiful! Mate, how did you mask the sides that curve up to the nut end of the headstock? I'm having trouble doing it and making a bloody mess. Cheers.
-
I'm quite sure he was and I was too - partly. The Van Halen bass line is valid of course, but frankly even I would find it hard not put a couple of passing notes in!
What's the reason you would find it hard to resist putting in some passing notes?
-
This bass line does exactly what is necessary for the song. Remarkable restraint and minimalism! So refreshing to see someone play who doesn't feel the need to fly around the fretboard constantly. This is what bass playing is all about, imho.
See this is the thing, I don't know if Lowender was extracting the urine when he posted this and his comment, but you are exactly right. There's some really beautiful architechture in the world, but most people who look at it and explore inside it see the facade, the shapes, the colours. They rarely think about or appreciate the structural elements, the foundations - but you take those away and your beautiful f***ing building collapses. Most of us bassists need to feel happier knowing that. We are not paint, we are not fancy little shapes put there to delight the cooing masses - we are the foundations.
Manring is good. He has one annoying habit tho'-he doesn't sit still. He keeps twisting the tuning pegs all of the time . I feel like I should tell him to stop it .. It's in tune! Just play it .
If this is a joke it's a subtle one
-
Well, he is really really good. lol. BUT... he doesn't really do it for me. No disrespect. That's just my taste. His tricks are terrific but his playing with a band isn't particularly interesting. TO ME. His slapping is good but so is the slapping of thousands of blokes. So it comes down to his two handed tap/chord melody playing. That's where he's the master, right? Well, check this out. I believe what this guy is doing is so far beyond what Wooton has ever done. He's stupidly great. Never heard of him.
Awful sound, poorly executed, devoid of beauty. If you are going to go out on a stage and do something that stupid, at least do it with some flair and panache, and write a composition that sounds like you have some heart. The sad thing is, he is probably a good accompanist, he was probably made to do that solo spot. The fact he was half out the spotlight for a lot of it seemed to me like he was uncomfortable or inexperienced at having a solo spot. The bass is a horrible instrument for soloing unaccompanied. I can't see how anyone with any musical appreciation would like this video, it's just grimace-inducing, sphincter-tightening nonsense that any average guitarist could make sound so much nicer. It's just a little show-off section done without any humour or grace. f***ing yeurrgh.
