Most of mine have been brilliant, Hohner Jack Bass, various Warwicks, Squiers and Fenders. But I adore my 1983 USA Standard Jazz. And my new heavily pimped Squier VM Jag with a new neck is hot sh*t too. They both look gorgeous, they both have slim shallow necks with my favourite Fender Jazz profile, they both sound different but they pump bass out like a 10 scale earthquake, although the POD X3 can take care of most basses. I love them both to bits. I like that the Jazz is 30 years old, I always wanted an old Fender but all the 70s ones I tried felt weird, and I wasn't impressed with the feel or build quality. '60s way too expensive for no real advantage. This one is a beauty, bought from the lovely Pestie on here, and I had The Bass Doc make me a gold PG. It's a real looker and plays like a dream. I love that I won the Squier Jag in the Bass Bash raffle, it came to me for some reason, I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it, but it's active and has a big tone, and one night I just thought ZULU BASS! and came up with a concept very quickly and got the parts and put it together. I love Hipshot so that's where the parts came from and The Bass Doc cut me a gold PG and I sprayed it with the Lion's head. It's a single purpose bass for a single band, it needed to be a dub detonator. It is.
Well, that certainly seemed to work although I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that folks thought it more interesting with the Saville header
An interesting little experiment innit Think I'll title my album the same Also, a good way to remember how to spell Savile correctly lies in the second syllable.
Very good player, shame about the song, did sound a bit like the music you get on the end credits of a cop film, bet in a band setting he is the balls.
Interesting. I wouldn't have expected you to like it at all mate! And you're right about the cop film

What string dimensions to put on a beginner's electric guitar?
xilddx replied to BassTractor's topic in Other Instruments
9-42 will be fine. Bear in mind that they will hurt a little until your beginner has built up some tiny calluses, a few hours should help. A virgin finger on a 9 gauge will feel like a cheese wire on your bellend, but that won't last long if they practice for 20 minutes a day. Oddly, I find a nylon strung acoustic is best for building calluses, may be the heat that is generated through them. D'Addario EXL nickel wound are cheap and excellent quality. -
That seems to be a Squier Classic Vibe 50s Strat. I had one, it was a great guitar for the money, even out of the box.

Congratulations Spoombung! I can't believe I'm the only one who voted for Paul h's beautiful piece though!

Blimey it's quiet in ere. Obviously not very impressive. Maybe it needs a new title ..

f***ing 'ell, think I'll get my ouija board out. Probably less scary than this pedal board anyway.
Nope, never heard of him. It says he won Guitar idol. Well deserved by the sound of it. Beautiful player. Throws the lot in. One minute he's in some mode from outer space and the next he's blues scale and it all just seems to gel and work. Great fluidity and a serious command of the fretboard. Lovely playing, but no doubt there'll be a further 70 posts explaining where he's going wrong Looks like he's playing a Squier too. Mine doesn't sound like that!! Funnily enough, I didn't pay too much attention to the rest of the composition so I guess that means his playing held my attention for the whole 5 minutes although for the intro chords it did sound as though David Sanborne might start playing
It mostly reminds me of Eric Johnson, but that's because of the backing track, his phrasing is much like Eric in parts too, and perhaps he chose that guitar for the vid because of that too. Regardless of all that the kid is a fabulous player, and his note choices should be able to melt many hearts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8P8WwzDeCI

And I've never heard of him, he just came up randomly on YT. Really beautiful phrasing and execution even if the composition is a bit prosaic and lacking dynamics.
Perhaps we of BassChat, should think of potentially putting together our own mag? Granted, that's a very pie in the sky thought but if we can't find a mag to meet our tastes then we should make one? I'd certainly love to be involved if ever such a thing comes to fruition...
We should put together a new UK political party too, and a decent coffee shop chain.
There has been plenty of encouragement on here alone for the magazine. I think it's beyond help.
It's beyond belief mate.
£900 mate for a custom shop....are you having a laugh? It's more than double that and it's not near mint....it's MINT! Btw I'm not male so all your assumptions are totally incorrect. £7 might be worth it for as many adverts as you want to put but I'm only selling one item and its a guitar so doubtful it would strike up much interest amongst bass players and how likely are you to tell your 'bandmates' there's a guitar for sale thats going to cost them a packet. Yes, it was free last time I used this site to source a ltd edition bass so I was surprised that it cost £7. It would be far more profitable to charge £1 for every item that's advertised whether it be a set of strings, fx processor or expensive axe. I wouldnt use evilbay but rest assured it got advertised on reputable sites. It's a shame your guitar buddies didn't get to hear the full details about an amazing guitar that is a worthy investment.
You are clearly 95% cocoa butter.
Well seeing as I posted this in a bass forum, I would expect comments about the bass not being loud enough. When you're listening out for something in a mix, I find the temptation is always to grab that fader and put it up a decibel or 2. I'm sure if I'd put it on the drummer forum, they would have said the drums weren't loud enough, or if I'd put it on a guitar forum, they would have said the guitars weren't loud enough. It's not exactly ...And Justice for All though, let's face it Thanks for your comments though. I will take them on board for future reference.
Er, no. I am very objective about mixing, the song is king, I tend to be completely unaffected by individual instrument love. Possibly because I play bass, guitar, and drums, and vocals, and a bit of simple keys. Do some comparisons with other bands you like of a similar style, see if the low freqs are lower than yours to get some perspective.

I'm still clueless

It's really good man! It might be a bit too 'clean' for my liking, I'd want to see a bit more filth, a bit more dirty funk. But that's nothing, it's a great performance, very high quality production in all respects. Great ladyvoice. Really impressive mate, and enjoyable.

I don't know how honest I can be without people saying I'm being negative like the last time it happened. Because what I would say would not be subjective or forgiving, it would be in comparison with extremely high presentation standards like ebs_freaks's band, or indeed GunsFreddy. I have no idea what you want to achieve with your band, perhaps that would give us some context to work with. I could just say nothing.
It has changed my perspective of you. My minds avatar for you is completely different based on that song. Well done.
That's the beauty of music mate Thank you!

There are some cracking tracks this month, but one was so beautiful and sad that it had to get my vote. A truly beautiful and elegant piece.

I wrote and recorded this 6 years ago. It's about the deep anxiety and depression I suffered as a result of someone very close to me becoming addicted to smack. It really messed me about and I had some truly hideous times and Lady xilddx felt shut out because I didn't feel I could talk to anyone about it properly, even her. I won't let that happen in future, I learned a big lesson. The good news is my friend has made a great recovery and is now putting it all back into society by helping others in a professional capacity. Make what you will of the lyrics, they are a bit abstract I imagine I recorded it on a Tascam 2488 MkII and the drums are programmed on an Alesis SR-16. It's not a great mix, but it'll have to do. The bass was a Squier Silver Series Jazz. The Guitar was a PRS SE Custom Semi-Hollow. Vocal mic is £50 MXL shockmounted condenser, it's a wickid mic for the money. https://soundcloud.com/silddx/out-side
Thanks a lot for the feedback Nigel. I'm not sure what the singer has in mind, but I'm pretty confident in her vision and talent, so looking forward to it. Personally I'd love to hear Bombarder as a stripped back dub number with spare vocals dropping in and out, but I suppose that will be come in a future remix. Re. Bass in the mix, do you mean all three songs? To us, Bombarder was the only one which took a bit of fiddling. For previous mixes, when in the studio in front of their monitors, the bass sounded more balanced. Once played in a car/headphones/stereo etc, it just couldn't be heard well enough. We added a bit more of the DI track for mids, and upped the levels somewhat, and the result was a bass which sounds deep yet balanced on my headphones, stereo and car, and the rest agreed It was a bit overpowering on the studio monitors. The rational was that the vast majority would not be listening on studio monitors. Perhaps the quality of your headphones are such that they impart the subs too well! Perhaps we need to apply a high pass filter cutting off around 30Hz. I'll raise it and see what can be done. Thanks. I'd be really interested to hear whether others find the bass overpowering on Bombarder, preferably stating what they are using to listen to it! I feel a poll coming on ;-)
Yeah, for me the bass is a bit too big on all of them mate. Otherwise, it's all lovely!
