Thank you, Paul I might sling in Logic and re-EQ it a little. Yep, that's me singing. I'm not keen on the sound of my voice, but I really love to sing. I'm doing BVs with Kit now so that gets me off a bit. Might have another crack at singing lead again though, I'll have to knock something together for the next composition comp. I've barely heard the Stone Roses, I'll check that song out. Thanks again mate.

I want to make synth and dubstep bass sounds and control effects and what have you using a Keith McMillen Softstep and a swell pedal into the MacBook Pro using Apple MainStage. I also need normal bass sounds, probably amp/cab modelling like I do on the POD X3 Live I have (which may be retired if I can get all this new stuff working). I haven't bought anything yet, but I already have the MacBook with Logic 9 and MainStage. Any of you doing this? I'm a bit clueless and not sure what I need despite reading up a bit on it. Do I need an ADC as well? Any reliability issues? Is the Soft Step or 12 Step best for this? Thanks for any help you can give me. Nx
I have been wondering for a while about passing on some 'bass themed' thoughts regarding Gong and SHB (and Bill Nelson) material but didn't know where to post where it would be appreciated - maybe this is the place! I've learned a hell of a lot since getting the Gong/SHB gig in 2009 - from learning the (surprisingly difficult) material - to learning to play the fretless with an intense and solid feel. Let me know if there's interest out there and maybe I'll start another thread.
Dave, I think I'm going to get a SoftStep for Christmas I'll try it with Apple Mainstage and see what I can do. Will need an expression pedal too. So any progress on your bass thoughts regarding Gong and Hillage? I and others will be fascinated to read them!

He was a very lovely, kind and articulate man. I had some conversations with him via PM and FB, but like you, I didn't know him well. His kindness and intelligence continues to send ripples through Basschat. Lovely thread mate.

Thanks a lot guys! Shame the mix is so trebly. But it is what it is. Really appreciate your very kind words, cheers.

The old girl has been through a lot lately, an she's got through it in true style. I was just looking through my tunes and stumbled across this number I wrote and recorded, it's about her, not long after I met her. I had pretensions of getting a band together and doing songs like this. I recorded it about 10 years ago on a Yamaha cassette 8-track. My ol mate Larry is playing sax (beautifully I may say), the rest is me. https://soundcloud.c...ilddx/sun-shine
through earphones they sound well balanced bass just right ,maybe through studio monitors or good speakers its more subby but im not getting to much bass for reggae
I'm listening through Senn earbuds, it's way deeper than any music I have, including dub and reggae.
i really dig this. really creative music. fantastic playing by everyone in this band. anyone remember Tangerine Dream.?
YES MATE! Thank you! Loving this Ozric business! I have heard a little here and there, but it didn't freak me the f*** out like this does!

I think it will be Bombarder that makes her want to rerecord the vox. But otherwise they sound lovely. My main problem is the bass. It's too present, it's a bit overwhelming, it should sound big without BEING big, if you know what I mean, too much subs. For me it detracts from the vocal performance. That's not a big criticism, I love what you do, you play beautifully, languid or urgent as needs arise, highly accomplished. I think you should trust your singer, she knows. But you can go too far with these things and not know when to leave sh*t alone. I hope she wants to redo the vocal for the right reasons. I love it though mate, it's excellent! Thanks for posting the songs
-
Super, I will listen later and give you my impressions. I have to say, before hearing the numbers, I'm always inclined to trust a good vocalist wanting to rerecord, it HAS to agree with their vision otherwise it doesn't matter who likes it.
Chuffin 'ell ! It does indeed sound like Geddy Lee and Patty Smith have had a daughter who is very , very angry at them for something or other
Really weird innit!
-
Really enjoying the album. Strangely, the opening track starts with some spacey film clips stuff, then solo bass that sounds like Geddy Lee, then the band and the singer comes in, and she sounds a bit like early Geddy Lee, it's most odd http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G27S0f2FOI8
I appreciate your feedback. What I would say is that it's really difficult to get the bass heard without either drowning out the kick drum or having a really boomy sounding mix. I worked on boosting the frequencies on the bass guitar round the 150-200Hz range rather than the fundamentals to give it enough bass but also give the kick drum some room and keep the whole thing sounding tight. As far as I'm concerned, the bass is definitely there, you just have to listen out for it. I'm glad you liked the songs though.
Frequency management dude. I can hear the bass, but the overall mix is bass light. I really can't see it being a problem to fix that, seeing as you wanted to an all.
-
Dewd! I really like it. Very good songs and I like your voice a lot, I presume it's you. It's a very bass-light mix though. You might be able to fix that reasonably quickly. I think I would prefer a slightly expanded vocal sound if I was mixing it, maybe a bit of stereo widening. The balance of everything is very good, just needs more low frequency, get it pumping man! Overall I think it's a ace effort, easily enough emotional drive in there. I really feel immersed in it, I believe you. Totally credible in all respects except the mix. Top work, old egg.

Great Gig from HORSE last night (BC's Jennifer on bass)
Bush Hall looks like quite a cool venue. Must make my way down there one day... one day...
It's a lovely venue mate, I've played there a couple of times. The sound is excellent, all digital/iPad mixing, the sound guys are really helpful and competent, all the staff and owners are too. Great stage sound. -
I saw Horse at the Bush Hall last night. What a great gig. Top songs, sounds, and stage presence. Jennifer is a great player and supports the songs perfectly. Plays a mean bass synth too! Lovely to have a natter afterwards, thanks Jennifer, it was lovely to meet you. And a video here .. Didn't like them at all, they felt slightly rubbery and the coating flaked. I tried Cleartone EMPs and they are fabulous. Warm and zingy, last for ages, no flaking, even after more than 6 months of use. Way better than Elixir IMO. They are also only £23.50. They make Warwick EMPs, which are more money for some reason but the strings are exactly the same I am told. This ebay seller is where I get them, he is excellent.
Chaps, I'm in a couple of bands that want to have a no charts rule on stage. I approve, I think it looks more professional but I have a problem, my brain is full. No really, it is! I'm thinking, is it possible to put the charts on an iPad or an equivalent gadget rather than standing behind folder full of paper? Has anyone been down the same route? What did you do? I know I should learn the numbers. That's my last option, but if I can utilise technology in order to make my life easier I'd be a happier bass player.
One of our violinists uses her iPad for scores on stage. We also prefer not to have music stands on stage and the violins don't usually need them now, it's just that we have a bunch of new songs. The iPad seems to work really well for scores.
What else do you need? I made a very clear point. It actually defended your choice. But I assume you either can't comprehend it, or just want to be difficult. Either/or is fine with me.
It wasn't clear to me. Unless you were simply stating that a song is single-purpose, which it isn't. Certainly don't know what you mean with the Shakespeare / bombing thing, what's that about mate?
Jesus Nige, what've you got me onto here? I've been listening to these since I got back from work today and my recent resolution to not buy any CDs till after Christmas is about to be broken
I'm in the same boat mate!

Time to start getting fit. Because we WILL make you dance

Kit did a Crowded House cover in an electro-chamber stylee. Also we did No-one Knows by QOTSA but it's been removed from Soundcloud. I think you have to have a vision of the cover to do it well. It's actually really hard to change the style of a cover if you adore the song, so maybe do one you aren't that keen on ad make it 'better'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJTcY_Wi1M0
