MB1. I've never been an easy read! Extended Elipses? Can you not get some cream for that?
Good man. Although in one of my bands, I am the only member who can't read music, which means I get left to create all the bass lines because she can't tell me what to do LOL!
-
Also a big fan of Judie for over 30 years. Her daughter Bailey Tzuke is a also very good singer and performs in London fairly regularly. MB1, I get Extremely Confused! With ....... your use of capitalisation! Punctuation .... And extended elispes! Do you want some help with it? It takes ages to read

It seems everyone is discussing this without any definition of what BassBus meant by "technique". I presume he means "Correct Technique" as in positioning and playing the instrument as you would be taught by a professional. But it could also mean technical facility. I can't understand why you are discussing this at all. Had the question been what I think BB is really saying, "Do I need to have good enough technical facility and operational technique to play to my instrument to satisfy myself and the needs of my musical situation." would you still be discussing it? To me, it's a just a pointless question thread started by someone who just wanted to start a thread, which I imagine a fair few of us have done, certainly including me

Blimey, DR are popular! And with damn good reason, they are the best, baby!

OMG Gareth Are we shortly going to see myriad threads entitled "What's the best single cut 6 string cocobolo money can buy"? Seriously, I am too, I am having a ball using a Chris Squire tone with flanger and gritty overdrive. I used to hate playing with that kind of sound, always been a stickler for big old round, punchy reggae tones.

What a top gig! mrs silddx and I had a cracking time! Now, I'll be upfront and say punk and new wave has never been my bag, but I like to go and see BCer's bands and mrs silddx is a big Spizz fan, and we had a Friday night free. Rog's band, Hungry and the Hunted were already on when we got there at 8.15pm so we sadly only heard three songs, but they were really tight, straight ahead rock/punk with really good songs and delivery, and Rog's bass playing was totally solid and very confident - good tone coming from the Deluxe Precision, nice one Rog! Next up were Dutch Order who had a frontman who seemed to be influenced by Ian Curtis and Duncan Norvelle in equal measure, they were ok but I got a bit tired of them after a few songs. The next band blew me away! Dead Heaven. Killing Joke springs to mind but they had a really strong personality of their own and I was seriously digging their music, gorgeous key changes, and guitar like an angry Alex Lifeson, busy pumping bass from the singer. They had some serious style. SPIZZENERGI were a joy, hilarious to watch and the songs were so much more interesting than I expected. We had a damn good dance and a few beers, and I nearly got squashed by a f***ing monster of a Hells Angel type who proceeded to get a mosh pit going during Where's Captain Kirk and knocking people flying. I kept out of his way. A brilliant night that massively exceeded both our expectations and we're still excitedly talking about now. Rog, thanks for putting us on the G-list, you're a star mate, Cheers!

Not a bass, but I bought a brand new Fender USA Strat Plus in the early '90s for £675 that was so crap it was unbelievable. The neck and bridge were out of alignment and it would break strings, all of them, within an hour of playing. Fender's distributor refused to replace it and sent it somewhere where they identified the problem and tried to fix it! I persisted in my opinion that it was unacceptable and they eventually replaced it after about two months of me having to borrow a S/H one from the shop. I sold the Strat about six months later in Denmark Street for £250 so I could pay my rent.
Thanks Nige and yes I think Scott would be a great person to interview - consider me on the case - let me know if you have any questions I could 'potentially' put to him... I definitely loved what he did with Zappa - he's quite a character too - outspoken to say the least. Thanks again for the positive feedback Cheers Mike
Ooh wickid! That would be so cool! If you haven't read the full interview with Scott in Wictor's book Scary Musicians, PM me your addy and I'll lend you my copy. If you do manage to procure an interview with him, I think I would avoid asking about the crap that went on with Zappa's "'88" band, it's been done to death. He is also legendary in his dislike of being called bass hero or whatever, he said he thinks what he did with Zappa is easy to play for an intermediate player, something like that. It's expression of his personality that most fuels his need to play music - I believe, from reading interviews with him. What I'm interested in is his approach to composition and improvisation and how he creates a link between his personality and musical execution, and why he thinks it is important. I dunno, it's difficult to know how he might react to questions, I get the impression he would want to discuss the metaphysical aspects of music, and avoid talk of playing BASS. Just my impresssion. I'd also like to know if he ever got his six and a half minute cello and violin piece recorded. That's another painful story in the book. Hearing that piece would unlock a part of the Scott Thunes story for me. Edited for accuracy.

According to the Basschatters that have gone on one of these, it is great value for money and you learn all the core skills you need on the right equipment, from Jon himself. http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/course.htm

You do kind of look resigned to the fact you are having your posed mugshot taken, a passport photo expression -
Oh jeez, didn't mean to open this can of worms... I was just merely commenting on the individual threads for every single performance of this tours. Level 42 don't particulalry move me that much but I do appreciate it for what it is. Bring back Boon! Oh, and despite what was said in the other thread, MK has never sounded better than he did with his Spitfires - despite going through Crashdown!
Wait 'til RUSH come over

That's great Hope it's a gig that lives up to your expectations.

Thing is, it is just downright ugly, no aesthetic beauty at all. I love strange looking basses, but only if they are gorgeous to behold, like Spalt Basses.
Had a look at the new issue in W.H. Smiths yesterday. Says on the front cover that there's an interview with Colin Edwin from Porcupine Tree. "Great" thinks I, "something I actually have some interest in reading at last". Turns out the interview is over a year old & is completely uninformative anyway. Once again I didn't buy it as it just isn't worth the cover price IMO. I don't think I'd bother with it even if it was free to be honest. To be fair I think I've just read too many guitar/bass mags over the years & they all bore me now, not just BGM. The same people get interviewed over & over again without having anything new to say and I'm basically paying for adverts that show stuff I have absolutely no interest in buying anyway.
Must admit, I wondered how old that interview must have been. Like EBS though, Mike Flynn continues to be the best writer in there by a country mile. Mike, any plans for interviewing Scott Thunes when he's in London? I think the huge interview in Wictor's book covered a lot of ground, but Scott has a lot to say and I reckon a fresh approach from you could be very worthwhile!
Yes-I'd be wary of using Plastikote after my experience last week! I'd stripped my old Squier Jazz to the bare wood, then built up coats of Plastikote paint to make it a lovely, glossy white finish. I was so pleased with the result, that I decided to use Plastikote clear lacquer to protect and enhance it. After one light coat of the lacquer, every single square millimetre of the white paint crazed, bubbled and lifted! I spent the better part of a day stripping off the gooey, glue-like goop that was left behind, and ended up going to my local Car Discount store for some rattlecans. No more problems.
I just read this more carefully. I had exactly the same thing happen and I believe it has something to do with putting on the clear coat too soon. Not sure why it happens because they are both acrylic. I just let it dry and wet sanded it flat, seems to be ok. I won't be using it again though. The Tonetech Luthier Supplies precat nitro is amazing and very easy to use. It's possible to get a mirror shine on it too.
-
I'm doing my latest bass in Tonetech Luthier Supplies pre-cat nitro and it's more pleasurable to use. Touch dries within 15 minutes and I can wet sand it after 24 hours. Talk to them, they are very helpful. I guess I may have been lucky with the Plasti-Kote, but the bass finish is still ok.
C' mon guy, i'm not that thick. You've obviously never been in communication with him. He takes an age to reply, and my thoughts were to enquire here and probably get his address before he replies to my email asking his address. I didn't expect useless, unhelpful posts..... D.
Erm, ok, but a bit of background to your query may have helped. One can't assume everyone is of equal measure, we are not all communists. Best of luck. -
I've been communicating with Paul for a few weeks using email in order to have my electrics checked and overhauled. He's expecting them but he didn't give me his workshop address. Can someone please PM it to me? cheers D.
It is stupid day for me, so apologies if I am being thick, but if you have been communicating with him for a few weeks by email, why don't you email him saying, erm, what's your workshop address please Paul? It's worked for me with Jon Shuker, John East and Martin Sims.
