1.
Yes I've considered that. As per advice I just got from another user here (Circle_of_Fifths), I think I'll try to get Mr East to leave the jack slot unaltered and instead give me a stacked knob so that I can have the J-retro deluxe on my squier.
With all respect, why do you want the deluxe on a passive Squier Jazz? The J-Retro 01 has everything you need and is specifically designed to fit the standard passive Jazz, and as far as I know, does nothing different from the J-Retro 01 Deluxe. The Deluxe is for deluxe style Jazzes which have a separate battery box and side mounted jack. You need to speak directly to John about your requirements, other BC Members, like Circle_of_Fifths, may be labouring under misperceptions. Call John East, he will tell you that saying you want a J-Retro 01 Deluxe with a stacked knob and a bell-plate mounted jack is the same as saying you want a J-Retro 01. I'm not sure what Circle_of_Fifths told you, but I'm 99% certain it was wrong. Here is the text from the technical sheets for both, as you can see, the text after my emboldened bit is exactly the same for both. You don't need the Deluxe. The J-RETRO 01 DELUXE is designed to fit directly into "Jazz" deluxe style basses without modification, including a PP3 battery. Its high quality circuit uses three stacked knobs and includes an active blend circuit plus a 3 band equaliser with bass, variable frequency mid, treble and bright function. The active blend circuit prevents the loss associated with many passive basses where, when both pickups are up full, the signal fromone pickup feeds into the other and vice versa. However, a switch is included to allow a passive equal mix of both pickups. A second switch - basic "get-you-out-of-trouble" passive mode is included in case the battery dies in crucial circumstances, but this mode allows useable settings too. 2. I really like the guitar sound, but I would like it to sound a bit more throaty with a little less of the aggressive top end. The guitar and the vocal is a bit too loud in the mix for my taste. The drums lack a bit of definition and seem too highly compressed and not 'airy' enough, probably to compete with the guitar? The bass seems quiet in the verses. Great song! I enjoyed it, even though I don't usually dig on that style of voice. I guess you mixed it with the audience in mind which is no bad thing.

    The Feeling

Not met the bassist but I had a nice old chat with the singer when we played at the same festival a couple of years back. He'd not long been off stage so he was yapping like a good'un, he was very excited Really nice bloke. And I have great respect for the band, they write really interesting songs, music from the heart.
  4.
His last topics were 3 separate threads for 'Ric 4003 wanted' followed by 5 separate threads for 'Ric 4003 for sale'...
Perhaps it's time to leave the poor f***er alone. Maybe he's got some issues we're not aware of and this might be tearing him apart for all we know. I'd be supremely upset and embarrassed. But I probably wouldn't have started a thread like that anyway. Nevertheless ..
  5. Never mind mate, there will be others with the single and album being released soon. Have a lovely time with your inlaws

Despite their combined mix of Indian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani and Bengali heritage their music ...is not aimed at a traditional audience. Featuring NADINE SHAH's dark tales of love and loss, the 80s-tinged electro pop funk of KRUPA, alongside the Joni Mitchell-esque voice and melodies of SUMUDU, and RENU's cinematic journeys through unrequited love, death and sex in London, this event is sure to thrill, challenge and surprise you in equal measures. Leave your preconceptions at home - and maybe your auntie too. 7. See what your average '59 'burst goes for and you'll realise what chris b says is true. They are immensely sought after. The '57 Gold Top on ebay looks nice. But there are very many fakes around, really good fakes. There is no way the '57 will sell for what it's worth on ebay even if it is 100% original. They are simply just not bought that way. Would you spend £150k on ebay for a guitar you haven't seen, played, had checked? Most buyers will require an independent assessment for authenticity from a real expert, and I mean a REAL expert who can smell that it's right, they usually just 'know' just by looking and touching and smelling, then they check to confirm their instinct. These guys are few and far between.
  8. I think an awful lot of rubbish spoken about this subject and I agree with TNIT, it doesn't really matter much what bass you use. EQ it. If I'm talking to you next to a machine that's making a bit of a noise around the 4kHz range at the same level as my speaking voice, you'll struggle to hear me. My options are to speak more like Barry White or more like Joe Pasquale. Or shout.
  9.
Are you sure? Because the tone knob on the Jon East J-Retro Deluxe occupies the spot where the jack is supposed to be. If don't make a new hole, where do I keep the jack?
You want the J-Retro 01 for a standard Jazz bass, not the Deluxe. The Deluxe is for the Deluxe Jazz.
  10.
See, now thats how pole pieces should line up to strings! That is a stunner.
Details like that make all the difference don't they. Jake had a play on it the other night and loved it. The response is so even all the way up the neck and on all strings. No dead spots, nothing. It's close to perfect. Fantastic build quality and the neck socket is tight as a bag of funnel webs. Believe it or not that's a 6 piece body, but it's incredibly resonant, especially in the low mids. If I close my teeth together and put my chin on the upper horn while playing low notes on the E string, it makes me feel a bit sickly and blurs my vision.
  11.
Nice one Nigel, looks in incredible nick for a ten year-old bass and really versatile. Has this cured your Fender GAS?
It's cured me of all GAS mate! For now
  12. Shonks, that's a fantastic bass, and it looks lovely. It's very satisfying doing a parts build. I designed and built a bass last year and it came out splendidly, and it's unique. Delighted for you mate! Another J-Retro user too, wickid aren't they!
  13.
That is a handsome beast. Love the look of the neck, well all of it really. The Jap necks are fine things aren't they?
Thanks man. I reckon they make the necks like this, 'oval' they call it, because the Japanese generally have smaller hands than Americans, I would think so anyway. They really are fantastic to play, my perfect neck really.
  14. I sold my Warwicks and got this fabulous new Jazz, had it a month and thought it was about time to put it in here as to me, it's pretty porny It's about ten years old and virtually mint. I bought it for £645 from John Blackman at Far East Guitars who I can't say enough good things about, lovely guy and very knowledgable about Japan Fenders. http://fareastguitars.co.uk/ Fender Japan CIJ, non-export premium model, limited run 62RI Jazz Bass, CAR with matching headstock, rosewood dot slab board, alder body, American Vintage pickups and Badass II as stock, East J-Retro 01, DR Strings Black Beauties. Made in about 1999. The neck is gorgeous, very shallow with soft rolled edges, deep honey gloss, beautiful to play. I put the J-Retro in because I'm used to actives and I need my low end to be as big as Beyoncé's leg. It seriously delivers and it's now an immensely versatile bass. Another John who I can't say enough good things about. http://www.east-uk.com :: I posted some 'before and after' sound clips are here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=123987 I adore it, but I think I'll get it to the Gallery for a proper set up.
  15. They look ridiculous. I'm out.
  16.
Would you really give a sh*te about my opinion?
Ahh, low self esteem
  17. Nice mate! Nice tone too. Love the interraction with the drums here and there. I always find bassists who programme or play their own drums naturally accent in the same places. You were really getting into that weren't you
  18.
I wanted to give a shout out to Martin, Alex and John at the Bass Gallery. Dingwall sales manager Barry Lamb, Dave Swift and I spent the afternoon there yesterday hanging out, talking bass and fine tuning Dave's bass. Martin graciously offered the use of his bench and workshop to work on Dave's bass. This was a huge gesture considering how busy he is. I have much respect for what they do there. The Sei's that I saw on the wall and in production were incredibly beautiful. Dave Swift has been an absolute joy to work with. Mind boggling career, impeccable player, as down to earth as you can possibly get. Looking forward to the London Bass Guitar Show tomorrow. Cheers
They are top geezers. Nice post
  19.
I think it's important to recognise that these threads are getting views and downloads, even if they're not getting comments.
Perhaps. But this is a discussion forum, not a newspaper.
  20. Another thing people do is post stuff in the other high profile forums to get some more attention, I assume, and they never get moved to the recording forum. I remember a discussion about recording and LiamPodmore posted a link to some of his band's stuff. It was poorly recorded but I loved one of the tracks, it had some laughing in it, and I really loved it. Been trying to find it but I can't and myspace won't work for me at the moment.
  21.
I didn't even know that section of the forum existed. I do now. Thanks.
Weird that isn't it. I just went into the groove library for the first time, and it's potentially very useful but not a lot of interest after three years, it just snails along. 22. Well, it seems to me that unless it has a humorous slant, posting up clips for comment is a waste of time from reading this thread. Not many positive vibes are there. I remember Duarte posting for comment some songs his band had written for children, they were f***ing ace, and I wanted a CD, but I don't anything ever came of it.
  23.
I have never been in that section of the site and even if I did, I don`t think that I am in any way qualified to comment on another players abilites or lack of. That`s my excuse anyway Jez
Mostly people want opinions on the ARTISTIC properties of their music, or their tone. It's rare someone asks for a critique of their technique. Music is art and we are all qualified to comment on something in our own ways, eg. what the music says to you. The more technical of us may wish to comment on the technical aspects, or the mix. I bet you have opinions on all sorts of things.
