These are my mates from Transglobal Underground who were founder members of Furniture, Transmitters, and others. I'll be playing a few numbers with Mikel and the Ikons. This should be a great night. Cheers! Nigel
PLEASE vote for either BASS 1 or BASS 2... Bass 1 isn't bad by any means, but Bass 2 sounds richer and more refined to my ears, nicer bass response and nicer mids. I would choose bass 2 it was me. There's not that much to choose between them, and a lot of those sounds are coming from your hands. Nice playing too BTW Crikey, just found out what they are! Goes to show you doesn't it. Mind you, a bass is not just about the sound, there are so many other things to consider.
Yeah..I like what she is trying to do. I think she should get paid/exe's gigs though..then you could get past this begging bowl type situation, maybe. I hope that doesn't come across too badly, just saying that the band sounds good on demo and deserves a bit of respect by the promoter/venue, IMO.
I agree. We do get the odd one or two. It's sort of coming together now, Kit often now gets approached by venues and promoters, drummer leaving was bad timing.
Aargh.. timing.. I'm in the process of moving, so it's really hard to gauge my time at the mo with current gigs... If the post is still open in 6weeks, I'll put myself up for consideration.. Nice Tuuunes
Thanks mate I will certainly let you know. Good luck with your move. I always find moving a mixture of rabid excitement and dread Cheers, N

Kitty needs a talented, creative drummer, quite quickly. The SITUATION: Our drummer has had to leave because one of his other bands got signed and he's had to rationalise his commitments. He's playing the shows we're committed to, so if you are interested you can see us live next Wednesday in Proud Camden - link to details here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=127649 YOU: Kit would like a creative drummer who can mash it up but play very sensitively too. Kit's music is quite diverse in its influences but is essentially dynamic, musically theatrical, prog pop - Kate Bush NOT Kate Nash. It's a fun band to be in, and musically very rewarding. You will need to be able to play to a high standard, be comfortable with some odd time signatures, and have excellent timing and dynamics. If you have electronics, like an SPDS, that will be extra cool! The BAND: The band is mostly professional musicians who play in the band out of love for Kit's wonderful voice and music. There is no money for playing in this band, but Kit pays for all rehearsals and recording. We want success, but not with musical compromise. The line up comprises [You - drums], Me - electric bass, Sam - textural electric guitar + glockenspiel + MicroKorg, Emma and Jessie - violins, and Kit who sings and plays piano. Kit writes all the songs but we all put our colours into them. We are building a small following some of whom show up at every gig, and it's growing. We've had some excellent magazine reviews too, and are releasing two eps shortly. GIGS & REHEARSALS: We rehearse in west London on average twice a month as a full band, with one or two gigs a month. LISTEN 'ERE: There is some live-in-the-studio material here http://www.myspace.com/kitrichardsonmusic But I have some rough mixes of the new ep recordings which is much more what we sound like now, I will send them to you if you are interested in joining us. If you are interested, email: Kit kitrichardsonrocks @ gmail.com Me silddx @ gmail.com Kit Richardson on Facebook All the best, cheers, Nigel

Looks like a waste of time to me. How old is the bass? If it's old it may be worth saving, but is there no chance of a refund from the seller? Probably not as you bought it face to face from what you said. If you take it to a good luthier they will be able to defret it, reshoot the fingerboard to make it level, then refret it. Makes more sense than getting a new neck. http://www.thebassgallery.com/workshop.cfm

Van Halen 1984. What a great album. Girl Gone Bad is a monster of a VH number. Also been giving the first VH album and Fair Warning a good spin. Love them.
You didn't mention what I think is one of THE main reasons - the fact that people see vintage Fenders as a risk free investment that will reap them serious dividends if they hang onto it for 10 years or so.
I can never decide if those people are deluded or cynical.

What is the going rate for getting paid to play?
xilddx replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in General Discussion
I still don't know why this is in the Bass Guitars [Just for bass guitar posts] section -
Ok, I get what you're saying, but that could be said of any bass of any age/origin/provenance/value.
Wot, even a Ibanez?

It's a crazy question with no answer. -
This is OT, but I think there are 3 reasons why people pay the money for a vintage Fender: For a lot of people it's about buying a piece of history. For others it's about image and the peer approval that comes with owning a vintage Fender. Others, rightly or wrongly, believe they're the holy grail of electric bass and anything else is a compromise. A lot of people buy them for a combination of the above, but essentially they are the reasons.
I don't actually agree with those reasons, not that they're wrong, just peripheral to what I think is the main reason - which I believe to be that most people who want a vintage Fender think they will have a living thing in their hands which they can have a relationship with, a best friend upon which they can visit all their pain and joy, and stare at lovingly for long periods of time. They want to be able to say 'this is my bass, we speak in tongues together, I need no other'. They want a bass with a pulse.
Apology accepted. I hope not to have offended anyone as this is not my intention. I really don't like distortion on a bass guitar. So what. I have no problem with others playing with HairyMuffs et al. Its hard to post on here without upsetting someone - feel like i need to run everything through the BC PC filter if i had one. I think the thread has been great and i have learnt a lot (that i am a dinosaur) and realised that there are some effects out there that i might like to try.
I wouldn't worry about it. There is no need to be PC. There are always people who will get a bit upset, that's life mate. In terms of effects, they can be as mad or as subtle as the sounds in your head. I like all colours and I'm as fickle as f***, I change my mind constantly, but all I want is a smile on my face. If you think the effects v no effects debate is a little steamy, try the analogue effects v digital effects one for the full on volcano.
I think you are missing the point and haven't read the previous posts - but there are a lot of them. No one is judging anyone except you. So anyone with a different view to you has a funny attitude? The thread was doing quite nicely with some great contributions till you showed up.
I have read them all. Despite your saying you don't want to upset or have a dig at anyone, your OP, and most of the comments you have made, demonstrate some prejudice or ignorance with regard to those of us who use multiple effects. We are probably used to it by now but I have had concerned comments from some engineers when they see my POD, and I have to waste time reassuring them while I'm worrying they're not experienced enough to get the band a decent sound. As for you being a "dying breed", that's lazy engineer speak for "thank f*** I can set the desk to 'simple bass' and get to the bar quicker" If I have upset you I apologise.
-
Christ, there are some funny attitudes around here aren't there. If you like the sound of your 62 Precision into a B-15 unadulterated for your Marvin Gaye tribute, fine. If you like your Dingwall through a NaztyAss JerryCurl FuzziFunk for your RHCP cover band, fine. What's there to argue about? No amount of effects will save you from playing like a prick, and no amount of purity will make you sound like Jesus. I like a very produced sound live and in the studio so I use compression and a little chorus on most of my sounds. I need to pretend I'm a cello sometimes. I need loads of subs sometimes. I use amp sims, compression, distortion, flanger, noise gate, volume pedal and delay in a single song, all together and it sounds amazing and suits that particular song. Do what you want, don't judge others because they are different. You are either a sensitive musician, or an insensitive one. Sensitive musicians do what's good for the song with the agreement of the composer.

Sounds fantastic, Clarky! Are you glad or regretful that you couldn't do all the dates?
Playing bass or anything else isn't cool in itself. Playing in a band with other interesting musicians and doing it well is cool.
Dear chris, You are a very, very serious gentleman, so I understand your desire to elevate the application of original poster's question from the onanistic to the contextual. But the concept of 'cool' and your use of it seems quite incongruous with the general theme of your very, very serious message, would you care to explain what you believe 'cool' to mean in the context you describe?

Bass is Superkool blud! No other instrument can make people dance and be sick at the same time.
Definitely interested, Nige. How realistic is 8:00pm?
Great stuff, Jack, thanks! Probably not very realistic, those are the door times I think. I imagine we'll be on about 9.45pm as we're supporting the headliners. Hopefully see you there, and Paul if he's around. Take care mate.

Kit, Nigel, Sam, Emma, Oli and Kate. On a stage. Making a lot of noise. It's been over two months and we are about ready to burst. Seriously can't wait. And it's a Wednesday...what else would you be doing other than getting smashed at Proud with a bunch of violinists? This night is run by Unstable Promotions who consistently put on messy, dance-on-tables nights for people who dig good music. Please come along and support us both. We will do that thing you like (yes, that thing.) I think there are two elements to this. Once you have the basic slap techniques down, it's easy to play very FAST. Unmusical instrument operators find FAST impressive and they enjoy doing it, and they think others do too. But it becomes a FAST competition, much like competitive athletics. Really musical people know other really musical people will find a single note played with extreme taste much more impressive, and that one note will say more about the player and his personality than thirty two in the same measure ever can. Unfortunately really musical people have always been in the minority.
