Well, if you can't join those, you can always try them
It wouldn't work out, I'm not a bible basher.
Why do you say that? I saw pictures of 74 J's on the web, it should look like this one: ...but without the ashtray and with a neck PU cover! I'll be getting pics of it latter so i can see how it is - jus to GAS a little - but i've pretty much closed the deal with the cash+rack guy! I just want to see more pics and show you so i can have all my options covered and chose the best without any doubt! Cheers
It's a 74RI then I should think.

In my time on Basschat no-one, to my knowledge, knows more about Warwicks that warwickhunt. Along with him I am a great fan of Warwicks. Hear what he says and take note. A decent 90% 74 Jazz in decent condition will fetch about twice the current value of that Thumb. Even though the Thumb is arguably twice the bass.
I'll give it 3 weeks, tops!!
I'd give it about ten days knowing me
Argh!!! Now i've been offered a 1974 Fender Jazz Bass for the Warwick!!! All original but with new pots and a missing ashtray in Natural finish with blck PG, block inlays and binding... I'll disconnect my router and start convincing myself i need to save some money!!!
Whoever is making the offer is lying about the Fender or a bloody idiot
Quite excited to hear the samples, I was thinking about a P-retro for my Squier (already upgraded the pickup to a Duncan SPB-2) but not too sure if I need one/can justify spending more than I payed for the bass on a preamp.
I'l try to get some up tonight.
I do smile at these 'tone as a holy grail' stories. I have never worked on my tone with this level of obsessiveness and have had three people this week (a bass player, saxophonist and a recording engineer) independently tell me my sound was great. Stock Wal with 10 year old Rotosound Solo Bass strings on it through Eden Metro. Just play the damn thing
Smile away my friend. I'm far more fickle and capricious than you, and I suppose other tone heads are too maybe. My preferences, opinions and attitude change constantly too. You seem much more settled in your ways and as long as your notes ring clear you are happy. But you play jazz and latin, it's different. The pop music I play means I need different timbres and effects. I've always enjoyed the great tone quest. Maybe for you it's less important. All I know is I found a sound that makes me very very happy. I love great guitar tone too. I have also had engineers, band members and audience members say they love my sound, but until now, I've not had the tone that speaks true to me in the way this one does. I'm just as obsessed with hi hat and snare sounds
Hey Silddx, really pleased to hear you love your new improved tone. Would you say the John East pre-amp was the main reason for the improvement? I've got a US75 and love it to bits but am sorely tempted by an East pre. How difficult is it to fit? Edit: OMG just realised John East's place is less than 200yds from my house in oxfordshire - surely it's a sign!!!
Without question, it's the East. I recorded a track for my friends album last night and it was pure joy. Not at all difficult to fit but I'm sure John would do it for you.
well blow me down and call me a taxi. can't imagine the gloves last long tho. do gloves help with sustain? or socks for that matter? hang on. deja vu.
I have worn a few little holes in the finger tips after about twenty hours. They don't hinder my playing at all, and actually promote very smooth playing and more even tone. I don't mind looking like Audrey hepburn though, some people do
Sorry i expressed myself wrong! What i meant was if it looked like the model i was told it was, i mean, an old (pre 98) original Warwick Thumb. Sorry for the confusion. I'm getting more inclined to close the deal with the rack. I'm valuing it at 400€ (350ish pounds) for the whole set. I think it's a fair price and if i sell it at that price i'll be getting the money i've been originaly asking for the Stingray sale - basses are way more expensive over here! Thanks for the reply
Ahh, sorry. Yes, it's definitely an old Thumb. Asd has been said, the board, nut and trussrod cover confirm it. But you are doing the right thing.
I'm not a member and don't want to post something i still don't own. If anybody asks me a question i wouldn't know how to answer! Serial nr only this evening. This was a photo the guy had in his office computer. He told me he was going to send more pics and info this evening. From the photo does it look ok to you?
How is it possible to tell from a pic? The old Thumbs, like that one, are reasonably sought after but you can't tell from a picture mate. It might be f***ed, who knows. I personally hate those open grain wenge fingerboards but some people love them. Even the old ones don't command high prices. I've seen them in the Bass Gallery for about £1100 last year. Forget the Thumb man. You are looking for a good deal and a few bob on speculation, but it's not going to work out for you in this case. Go for the other deal which is way better in terms of value.
To be honest, I've noticed a big difference in quality over the MIA stuff and the CIJ stuff. The MIA just seemed better finished and nicer.
And you can use the gap in the neck socket as a money clip, if you've got any left after the extra £600 for the slightly better finish*. *citation needed
I am honestly baffled as to why anyone would pay big money for a US Fender when the Japanese ones are often much better (except maybe an old 60s vintage one).
A certain daft vanity or belief that America is a paragon of excellence and superb quality control Yeah right
Nope, it's stuck in Aberdeen and no one can find it apparently.
Bloody Marvellous
I've played Elites all my life and I love them. However, everyone has been banging on about how great Rotos sound so I gave them ago and they sound way too nasely and middy. Going back to my Elite Stadium. I also tried those coloured DR strings but found them to deep and muddy.
Rotos and elites sounded ok for a few days until they got dirty, and dull. They also feel disgusting to me, sticky and abrasive at the same time. The new DR Coated strings seem a lot brighter with the new K3 coating, the previous coating was definitely a little duller sounding, certainly not muddy though.
+1 for leaving him alone to do his job. If the sound guy is good he's good and if he's not, all the nagging in the world won't make him any better. And what do you know about FOH anyway?
BIG +1 That said, I've had some arrogant but totally flaky f***ers that can't manage the monitor mixes, and are not to be found at their desk when you need them. I would NEVER play the Babalou Crypt in Brixton again.
Good grief...! What have you been playing the last x amount of years? A Banjo... Garry
Warwicks, Fender, Jap Squier, Kopo .. I have good ears for tone, and I know what satisfies them. Very small differences in the timbre and string to string eveness of response can be black and white to me in terms of personal pleasure and satisfaction. The Warwicks were very very close, but this?! This is f***ing amazing tone for me I'll try to get a few little clips up soon.
Hi In the folowing of my gear clearout i've been offered this deal. I haven't recieved any pics yet but i asked the guy to send me some pics and the serial number this evening. What happens is that i hate all Warwick gear (yes, all! I don't even like their bags/strings/cables... am i weird?) and have absolutely no knowledge on this model. I know it is a very sought after bass and has some market value. My question is how much do you think it's worth? It's an old model, original and with Barts. I have another deal going on where i've been offered 1000€ (850ish pouds) plus a rack with a GK 400RB IV and a behringer tuner. Is this deal better than the Warwick? Please enlighten me! Cheers edit: spelling... again...
This is the deal. Forget the Thumb. You hate Warwicks right? And it's probably worth about £800 or so.
Rotosound Pressure Wounds - just add the right amount of umph to the fretless without completely losing all the qualities of flats. (sorry, lame description, one of those you know it when it happens moments)! That's a cracking looking Jazz BTW, glad it sounds as good as it looks
I had a feeling it would be Rotos, don't know why. I hate them personally, and Elites, can't stand the way they feel. I love the new Black Beauties with the K3 coating.
I'm with you there! I have to give the J-Retro a lot of credit...
Yep, the J-Retro is where it's at! A superb bit of work
Now taking bets on the for sale thread date
I would never rule that out. But certainly at the moment it would have to be a cracking bass to supercede this one. There's too much magic with this Fender. It has its faults, the action is higher than I like, the nut is cut a bit off, but other than that, there is magic. I even like the colour.
I've just had the same eureka moment - and all it took was a different set of strings!
What are they mate?
