1. Top review! I love the sound of the neck dimensions. Do you mind saying how much it cost? With import duty and all those extras.
  2.
I don`t like Geddy Lee, or Rush for that matter. I think they overplay everything. Very good technically, but dull . It has no soul.In my opinion, James Jamerson is better than Geddy Lee any day.But it is like anyone, it is just an opinion, so it is not fact. I would imagine James Jamerson has inspired more people than Geddy Lee as well.
3.
All I have done is reiterate what other well - respected and authoratative commentators on the subject have said . If you find those ideas uncomfortable or difficult to accomodate then it is not really fair to blame me for that. It is not intended to be inflamatory or offensive, only erudite and well-informed. I would be happy to recommend the books that these ideas are discussed in if you would like? Like I have said, none of these ideas are remotely my own- I am just not that clever- but they seemed convincing and compelling to me when I discovered them. Maybe you would feel the same if you read them in full and gave them a chance, not a very brief summary by me .
You clearly seem to be defending that crap. “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them.” Margaret Atwood
  4.
The point is that women want it both ways. They claim to want equality and to be taken seriously, whatever that might mean, whilst at the same time shamelessly exploiting the benefits of inequality and exploiting their sexuality for personal gain if that opportunity presents itself. Sex and show business are inextricably linked, not least of all because sex will always be the most enthralling and compelling form of entertainment for mankind, so incorporating sex into other forms of entertainment will make them more attractive by association. But the pertinent point regarding bass players is that male bass players are for the most part rated for their playing skills, women ones are more often that not assessed for more peripheral l reasons , mostly to do with sex in some way or another . That would seem to be a fairly sober and sensible contention to me, and not at all controversial. Who would disagree?
Jesus mate Whose problem is that? Men create that issue, not women. WhoTF are you to decide that it's a fact that 'women shamelessly exploit' this sh*t? FFS.
  5.
Geddy Lee is a wonderfuly unique l and inspirational bassist. Who is better than Geddy Lee? What do you perceive to be his shortcomings ? I would suggest that there are few other bass players who are as good at creating a style and using it to great effect as Geddy Lee. Which few supposedly more capable players can better Geddy Lee either in terms of dexterity , technical skill or taste and judgement? Victor Wooten? Gary Willis? Don't make me laugh . They are both as dull as dishwater, and irritating with it. When Geddy Lee plays the bass , it is a special event. He's Geddy Lee. Within his chosen idiom., who do you think could do Geddy's job better?
This seems in direct contravention to your comments about ability on the other thread
  6.
Why is that a good thing? Why should I celebrate or be thankful for that? Why do you see that as some kind of vindication for Kim Deal's lack of ability? Does the world really need more inept bass players? I want less players inspired by Kim Deal and her ilk, not more.
What then is 'ability' in the world of pop and rock musicians? What is 'inept'? If you wish to focus on technical ability that's your affair. For me, ability is interpreting the needs of the music and fulfilling those needs with taste, nuance and passion, that could be Kim Deal, could be Scott Thunes. It's all relative to the demands of the music. Sounds to me like you need musicians to demonstrate a high level of technical ability for you to be able to believe in them and to enjoy the simpler aspects of the music they're involved in. Without wanting to sound patronising, I used to be the same - when I was a teenager and in my early twenties. There is absolutely NO NEED to have a high level of technical ability to be a great musician, it's all about the musical environment the musician is impassioned by, for them to connect to it on a visceral level and express what they are feeling. It's all totally subjective.
  7. Looking forward to listening tonight! Love this song.
  8.
Hi guys, this might sound a bit odd but any idea how to record a purring cat? I looked up that the purr frequency varies between 18-28Hz, depending on a cat. What microphone could pick it up? Thanks
iPhone Voice Memo Recorder on the kitteh's chest.

    Ouch yet wow!

I tried 9s on my '61 Melody Maker and it's amazing to play, partly because the neck is wonderful and the frets are worn in beautifully. I then tried 10s again and I'm going back to 9s. Optima Gold for me. Much prefer them to the D'addarios that I've used for ages. Can't imagine playing 12s though! Or even 11s for that matter
  10.
What are you going to use to clean and preserve the wood from now on? I ask because I have a genuinely worn through neck.
I use Briwax mate. Rub it in, leave it for ten minutes and then polish off.
  11.
Got the replacement through yesterday and I have to say I'm getting pretty annoyed with the retailer - Thomann . Bass isn't damaged this time but clearly isn't new, no manufacturer packaging, scratch plate film peeled and an entirely dead set of strings with obvious signs of wear/grime with some wear on the frets. It's clearly B stock but I'd swear it's had more than 30 days of use judging by the fret wear and grime on the board. Getting in touch with them now but I have to say that I'm very surprised at Thomann's very poor service in this case.
I had issues with Thomann just like this, they sent me a B stock replacement for a dodgy Steinberger Transtrem guitar I sent back to them. They were a real pain in the arse and the woman CS rep even got arsey with me on the phone. That was three years ago and I've refused to use them since. If I were you I'd be asking Sandberg for their thoughts too.
  12. Great entries! Really liked two of them especially. Nice work chaps!
  13.
the xylem website has been updated with loads of pics and sound samples here http://www.xylembass...asil-specs.html im gonna have a few days to get to grips with it properly and ill be doing a full review.
Stunning! Can't wait for your review! Congratulations man!
  14.
Having said that, can't really hear what is so special about the track you've posted Nige - I'll check it out properly on vinyl tomorrow (any excuse)
Like I said, his gorgeous phrasing, use of the kit in such a musical way, the way he moves the level of swing , almost going straight time in places. It's pure magic, a Copeland showcase. I love the tune too, and Sting is a masterful bassist in terms of feel and nuance. Summers is wonderful too. It's all about personal taste init. This music moves me in a very strong visceral way. My head is highly attuned to certain types of nuanced playing so a tiny hi hat accent can make me shiver. My brother and I are very similar in this respect and the same tiny hi hat thing would get us both shrieking, we'd both notice it, weird that.
  15. Got the mag. Great piece, great collection! Nice work FE!
  16. For some reason I had this number in my head today, just the rhythm and bass line. Couldn't remember what it was, started singing it and it came to me. Haven't heard it for years. I still love the song and especially Copeland's incredible feel and phrasing just as much if not more than I used to. Do yersel a favour .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDDsqJMFGrY
  17.
Looking and sounding very good Nige! That track is quite literally inescapable for me Great performance mate.
Thanks mate
  18.
Sorry to hear about all that crap getting in the way of the music But it sounds like you have other irons in the fire I've only done a couple of international gigs myself . . . . er, in Wales.

Ah sorry to hear about those falling through Nige, must have been gutting to say the least.
You know what, I wasn't gutted Now I've started running, and finding it joyous, has made me view music in a different way. I don't feel beholden to it as much.
  19. It's alright I suppose. Hardly innovative is it. And I'd certainly question the ergonomics.
  20. Hello chaps. Brazil was supposed to happen at the end of May. The company had to postpone it because of Brazillian customs issues. Glasto never happened because of some sh*t that went down between the management and Glastonbury and it got pulled. I'm not happy about that and I pulled out of the Brazil gigs because I don't want to piss off anyone at work booking and cancelling and rebooking leave, it's not fair on my colleagues. I'm going to be doing as much guitar work as possible with Sheema Mukherjee (work permitting), so there are UK shows planned and might be doing other international shows in Europe, India and Japan, but we'll see. May need to get a dep in for some of the international stuff. Sheema's launching her album very soon so I could be busy. I'll start a thread about that when it's available, I'm playing guitar and bass on some tracks so there is a bass connection Thanks for your kind interest x

  23.
TBH I don't think that buying guitar gear is any different from buying bass gear. True that there are slightly more models and makes that are deemed "acceptable" but once you step away from the mainstream the instruments and equipment are just as esoteric and hard to get hold of to try out. Take a look at the offerings from Teuffel or XOX Audio Tools to name but two...
I really want an old Steinberger GM1 Transtrem, or a Klein. Can't afford it, can't often find them. Never tried either but they are a dream for me. One day! No different than me being desperate for a Fender Japan JB66 for the last four years. Tried one of two in Guitar Village in Farnham last week and was totally non plussed. So I completely agree with you BRX
  24.
No, not much! Surely the topic of a thousand Basschat threads...
