he slammed the door on her hand?!? That's your mum! I would suggest several courses of action but this is a public section of the forum
Yep, that's where honour takes over. Despite my extreme distaste of revenge, I think I would have to design a punishment containing a long lasting lesson.
Hey guys, Hoping for some advise here. A few years ago, I loaned a PA to some mates to practice with. It was actually my mums PA but she OK'd it on the condition it came back. Well I have pretty much stopped talking to these guys now, and now my mums after the equipment back., Downside is that the guys have said that PA was destroyed due to damp. This I didn't know - I thought they'd be covering all the equipment up generally. I spoke to them a few years back and asked for it for her then (2008/9?) and got no reply. I asked the bass player when I last saw him (maybe a year ago?) if I could get it back. He had said it wouldnt be an issue and he'd get in touch. No reply. It seems I'm now in the middle which is somewhere I'd rather not be. It was a fairly powerful Peavey one (with speakers etc) Anyone got any advise to what I can do? Since I'm now getting Facebook messages about it (when it has nothing to do with me!) Cheers
Seems to me you are in the middle because you brokered the deal. IMO you have responsibility for the return of the gear in the condition it was lent. You've been shafted by some dishonourable c**nts but it doesn't mean you can absolve yourself from responsibility. If the c**nts are refusing to play ball what are you going to do? They might have sold it, and they might still be skint. You are not going to get your PA or your money from what I can see, so I think you are going to have to accept responsibility and try to squash it with your mum. Not an enviable position to be in, and I sympathise. I had a 'friend' when I was 18 who ended up taking advantage of my trust and stole a whole load of sh*t from me. He totally faced me out and threatened retribution from his new mates if I tried chasing him up for my sh*t. Luckily he only stole my stuff. To this day I don't trust Scottish people. Just kidding on that last sentence
Even the OP hasn't heard the final tracks so saying he should listen to the end result first and then make his call when he knows how the land lies is surely a reasonable suggestion? The OP has alluded to playing outside the pocket over, in his own words, So there seems to be a clash of ideologies to start off with. Again, it's all fluff because, until the final mixes are done no-one can say what's right and what isn't. Whatever about band solidarity, a producer from outside the circle will have no such allegiances and do what he thinks is best for the song... and here we are
Bang on, well said.
-
I suppose what I`m trying to say is, where`s the solidarity between us low-enders? Do we automatically side with guitarists or producers, without hearing the evidence, over one of our own?
Siding with one of our own? Solidarity? Hahaha You sound like a union rep I side with the needs of the songwriter usually. And we can only go on what the OP's said. It sounds to me like the guitarist knows what he wants. Anyway, if you want to be a 'creative' bassist, don't join a metal band, They usually only want the bassist to follow the guitarist anyway.
-
Keep playing bass no matter who says what, I would sack the band off, to me music is about being creative and in a band sounding good as a band and not at the expense of the other band mates. I may well be bullshitting but I swear I read that the guitard from System of a down records all the bass tracks so it is 'tight' But the end of the day you shouldn't be made to feel like that and I'm sure if you keep looking and use this as experience you'll find some people that all value each other.
But there is creative and CREATIVE right? The guitarist sounds like a great songwriter, and he got signed (although it depends on the nature of the deal) on the strength of these songs. Really good songwriters and performers are hard to find, and they often have a few marbles missing in the comms and diplomacy dept. just put up with it. It's all very well having a lovely time, but after three years of no progress with an average band, you'll be looking elsewhere, unless you're just a hobbyist, but the OP sounds like he has a bit of ambition.
I do that a lot, I retract my comment.
Nice one
This guitarist just sounds like a typical guitarist to me I.e. "what I write is always best and bass is unimportant". Don't let this get you down, just try and find another guitarist to start a band with, one who isn't a bit of a knob
That's just unhelpful bollocks mate, sorry.
-
Look mate, this self indugence isn't going to get you anywhere. You're feeling a bit sorry for yourself because someone's decided your taste and style didn't fit their vision, and they've done it again themselves. Your pride's been hammered and the band got signed and you don't feel you're a part of it. We would all probably feel a bit pissed off and have our confidence knocked after something like that, but really, this is music, everyone feels a bit differently about things. It's clearly the guitarist's vision and it has to be how he wants it to be, otherwise HE will not be happy. He felt your parts clashed with the vocal and guitar parts. Are you sure your ego is not getting in the way here? You have to write bass lines that fit the song to the songwriter's satisfaction. Being a bassist can mean putting your ego aside for the band. Your role is supportive, most of the time. Playing bass and writing bass are very different, and it's all subjective. Your guitarist has just one opinion. Have you had good feedback from other people? Are you in other bands? I think we need some context here. I think you should go along for the ride and play the lines how the songwriter wants them to be. But that's only if you think you can be happy doing that. This is an opportunity that might lead onto other opportunities. But you need to be comfortable in your role, and the band need to be comfortable with YOU. You'll need to jettison any resentment you have or it will get messy. If your ego needs a massage, then you need to be around people who will massage it for you, but really that's not going to help you in the long run. You need confidence in your ability and musicality. You need to be valued by the band, so have a full and frank with the guitarist and see what he thinks.
These are superb! I had the 4102 2x12 twin channel reverb version and loved it. Really would like this too but no cash only my BB424. good luck andy
Me too, fantastic amp! I used a BOSS Compressor Sustainer and got lovely creamy sustain with really good detail. Clean sounds are excellent too. -
Looks like a blast! Like the 'Fire' 'Desire' rhyming couplet in the first one I did think you had some sort of HM accessory on your wrist (That's HM, not H&M, although I suppose it could have been ) Glad you had a fab night mate!
I'm way too cautious/panic prone to wait, I usually change them after a few gigs, but I gig twice a week so it's getting expensive. I think I'll get a tester from Maplin this week.
Eh? You serious? A tester? Get Duracell Procell box of ten off ebay for a tenner, they last for f***ing ages, 100+ hours at least. Make sure you take out your jack when not playing though as that drains the battery as you're completing the circuit. Edit: £7.49 free postage, new stock. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-DURACELL-PROCELL-9V-BATTERIES-ALKALINE-PP3-PP3-/150518690146?pt=UK_ConsumerElectronics_Batteries_SM&hash=item230b9cf162#ht_2973wt_1179
Duracells have the most growl, they are also fat-sounding, clean, smooth, edgy, deep, piano-like and vintagey. Energizers are good batteries but they don't cut through or sit perfectly in the mix like Duracells do.

That's a lovely Bravewood he's playing.
Yeah, that's why it's got that classic truss-rod rattle sound Just kidding Mr Bravewood. I know your basses are gorgeous!
Aww! But what about 'Sphincter Factor'?? It's got legs!
I'll put on the Jeff Berlin album later, that has a Sphactor that all others are measured by. If you put High Standards on, you can get your endoscopy postponed for a fortnight.
Love that review Nige...
I have it on my headphones as we speak while I'm cooking. I really like it, and the more I listen the more it sort of reminds me of Steeley Dan, but without the great lyrics and the humour. But you know what, it's a grower, and I've had no sphincter action so far this evening I swore blind the other night that Allan Holdsworth is on it, but it's just a copyist, the boy needs to develop an identity.
Isn't that a bit like popping the vacuum around the house before your cleaner turns up ? Just like to add, apart from myself and Mrs Marvin our household does not employ a cleaner. I don't practice bass at all. I rarely play in between gigs or rehearsals at the moment, I haven't for quite a while. I'll have a quick play before a gig sometimes, or if I'm writing a live or preparing for recording. But I do play about an hour or two a day on the flamenco guitar. I'm starting lessons in about three weeks so I'm trying to get the various (very tricky) techniques into passable shape before then. I'm learning more than I ever could on a bass and most of it is highly transferable to the bass anyway.

I really love Radio Song, but Black Gold has cheesy lyrics and it kills it for me, I somehow knew she'd do that one. She is really, really good though, highly talented, and a great composer and player. Love her voice, but as Wombatboter said, the jazz clichés start to grate a little after a few listens. Edgy as a billiard ball but nevertheless, very accessible and lovely tunes performed beautifully I like about half the album a great deal, and about a quarter of it tightens my sphincter uncomfortably, not as bad as listening to Liza Minelli which has a sphincter factor of about 9.5. I'd say Esperanza's album has a jazz sphincter rating of about 2.5, which is excellent for what is essentially a soul/jazz album. Hope that helps
Anybody know what that thing attached to her bass's headstock was?Fatfinger? Clip on tuner? What?
Tuner I think.
