1. Thanks for the input. Im still undecided
2.
I think there is an argument that some players (not all by any means) are trying to 'buy' talent and, rather than working on legitimate, tried and tested methods of musical learning, try and adress their shortcomings by buying gear. I heard even Guy Pratt talking about a bass with a 'fast neck'. I don't care how fast the neck is, if a player has no musical knolwedge and lacks core competences like time etc, a 'fast neck' ain't going to solve the problem. I make no secret of the fact that most of the talk on here about gear is irrelevant nonsense - there is a thread on here about the best material to make a nut out of (walnut, obviously). What possible difference can that make to anything? I get that you get more sustain from this or that material but how many times a night do you hit a note that sustains long enough for that to matter? In fact, you are as likely to NOT want it to sustain. I think its all smoke and mirrors. I can't tell the difference in sound between a Jazz and a Precision or a Ken Smith or a Fodera. I can tell the difference between a Dorian minor and a Phrygian minor. That matters. But an ebony vs plastic nut? As important as the colour of your lead, methinks.
Great post. I need to play more.
3. I think Carvin need more marketing here in the UK. I barely hear a thing about them.
4. I used the same setup for years. I still think you cant beat an lead sled solid state or full tube amp for sheer power. Something seems different to me with the smaller amps, but the RH450 definitely gets super close. Now Ive started it, Ive got a little bit addicted to trying new amps/cabs. I have however, hit a very nice collection, and thats it for now. Im spending on the basses I have coming in and thats it for a good year or so. Part of it is 'check out this new amp, its better than your old one', then you get it, and it isnt. But some of them are stunning....it just takes time to find the one(s) that work for you.
5.
Mrs Raggy got me one of these for xmas. I likes it
Mine is very similar, and its comfy to! My missus got me it last March as a birthday present. Now she wants a few for the house!
6. I think they have a new line due out, and we will all love them again! I nearly sold my LM3 this week, but due to financial issues, I am not 'upgrading it', and to be honest, its the one amp I use if I need a totally clean and sleek sound with crisp high end. Nice kit, and I like the fact its all made in Italy and not out sourced. The website is currently down...for an update.
7.
I'd miss the space you get with the single pickup I think. And what's the point in more tones when the one you want is the basic one that every ray does?
Ive not played the HH, but I have a HS, and believe me the extra tones are very nice. The classic Ray tone is there, and 4 other great ones! Weirdly enough my favourite is one I never expected, and the different single coil tones are like a Jazz or a P bass (single coil Jazz bridge or single coil P) with more sonic punch. You dont lose a lot of room with the HS, and IMO its a good 'inbetween' setup. Cool H sounds like a normal Ray, and more.
8.
I'm a habitual MB user and currently have an LM Tube 500 which is very good. I quite fancy a GB Streamliner for some extra headroom but after all the hoohaa on Talkbass I'm going to sit back and watch for a while.
This is my stance. Im a bit miffed about the problems they have had....I dont want to take the plunge and they release another like GK did with the MB.
9. Im tempted to change my order to a HH, just because the upcharge isnt that much and you get 100% the classic Ray tone plus more! I prefer rosewood myself, but thats me
10. I think the current plan is another 4x10 and a Terror Bass, for now. Thats a lighter amp for when we are space saving, and a cab that can cover most gigs and be added to my 4x10 for a modular 8x10.
11. Have you not bonded with the Big Al like you expected?
12. I've never liked the style of them...ever. Reminds me too much of the 80s over slapped/synthetic sounding tones.
13. MB is great dont get me wrong, but the micro amp market has exploded recently. Believe me, the TC amp is incredible. It takes a lot to impress me amp wise, but they have nailed the 'modern SVT in a small box'.
14. First Bass Owned: Encore P Bass copy 'Go To' Bass: American Standard Fender Precision 'Your' Bass: EBMM Stingray (2 or 3 EQ)
15. The Classic is apparently the same sound, but here are the features the RH have as extra: Very functional tuner Ability to use the excellent pedal Semi parametric EQ Ability to store 3 different sounds (virtually everything) and recall them quickly Headphone/aux in for practicing (I use this all the time) Digital output on rear for recording They both sound great, but the RH features make it for me.
16. How loud do the SP212s get when they are together? Anyone tried this?
17.
Has to be the 8x10 IF you know what the stages are going to be like, ie a certain standard and size and indeed the trucking plus access in to the stage. For a mini stage gig you'll need something that will stack to around chest height, minimum, IME..if that is 2 SP212 then that might work..but don't stack them vertically, that is such a terrible look..and this might count in this situation.
Good points.
18. I was thinking that. Get one more 4x10 and tour with that, use my other one with it for big shows. I reckon a TB would be a great head for this kind of thing.
19. For £60 delivered brand new it's a total bargain. I needed a cheap thrasher and it works a treat!
20. The first part of good news is that I am officially back in gigging mode. My old band needed me to come back, and luckily I felt ready and more willing to play as much as possible. A year off was enough! The second part of good news is that they have been lucky/worked hard enough to get some help from Orange amps. They have agreed on an endorsement so myself and the two guitarists are looking at rigs for March onwards. Yes, I have the full stack, but I'd like an alternative that will be stored and heavily gigged. I'm thinking of the Bass Terror plus two SP212s. Small and punchy! Failing that, another OBC 115 or 410 so I can mix and match or just take one and let that do all the work going around the UK and Europe. I would love the 8x10, but I really don't think we could handle the size. I may look into a backup AD200b...all depends. What would you do? The whole backline is going to be Orange.
21. Man don't do it! Have you seen the retail on these now?! Shot up to nearly £2k plus yours is sunburst.
22. I find the best idea with the Ray EQ is to cut highs, leave mids flat, boost lows a little, and if you want it with more thump, string it with flats
23.
Six string?
In Stealth Black.
24. Get a Bongo
