it's even better than that. The Distance Selling Regulations allows you to return mail-order goods for any reason even if the item is in perfect working condition. The rationale behind this is that if you visit a store you get the chance to closely examine the goods and make an informed decision if its really what you want. With mail-order/online shopping this is clearly not possible, hence the DSR rights. There is a hell of a lot of consumer protection legislation in the UK. Frankly, buying online using a credit card is about the safest way of buying anything these days.
+1, and whether retailers like it or not, the Regulations are there to be adhered to. Its a risk for the buyer, so if it does work out, both parties are happy. If not, then the buyer doesn't lose out, which is fair.
Musicman over Fender, regardless. If you want P or a J sound, and the musicman sound, get a Big Al 5 SSS. Have you considered a Sandberg KenTaylor 5???
Agreed.
Being picked up is Dependant on the retailer. You might get stung by that one. The EU were trying to make it so the retailer had to pay but there were loads against it as it could effectively put smaller businesses out of business.
Yes, understood there. But, if it is deemed faulty then ultimately, legally, it has to be picked up. Obviously faulty is different for different people. For a £1500 bass thought, it should turn up perfect. Just discussing, thats all. I doubt i'll actually order online after previous problems. Ill probably just order one locally and wait for it.
I understand that some people actually enjoy shopping. Plus, I think the average person isn't spending 80 quid to get there and staying in a hotel afterwards. Maybe a daysaver on the metro and a pint.
I enjoy shopping! No doubt about that. But, when, for example, the bass is in London, and you are in Scotland, then things are different.

Yes, I know, to test it out. BUT, what if the store is around £70-80 worth of petrol and a hotel away? There are a few basses Im interested in. If I go try them, I have to spend a fair bit. If I don't, they come delivered, for the SAME price, and if there is a fault (eg poor workmanship which I believe to be a fault) then you have the right to cancel the order and have it picked up. Plus, if you buy it instore, then get home and realise you aren't happy, you don't have the returns policy (and if you do, its never as strong). Which brings me to the question, why bother going to try it, when it ends up costing the customer a lot more?!

Musicman over Fender, especially with a 5 string bass.

Thick question - is there a Musicman with a thinner neck?
Musicman20 replied to Gust0o's topic in Bass Guitars
The Big Al's can also be had for £1400+ in SSS, 4 string, standard colours. They are, IMO, one of the most fun new bass designs out there. Active/passive, Fender like tones, Musicman tones, very well built, great passive tone control, and almost sounds like a Sterling when you have the two back SS pups in series. -

For a new Musicman Sterling (USA) single H, normal colours (£70-100 more for bursts and natural), maple or rosewood, non-matching headstock, it SHOULD be around £1250-1300. If it isn't, shop around. I would definitely try a HS or HH though (+£75.00) if you can. Same tone at the back pickup (EXACTLY) then 4 more as well! I have a Sterling 5 HS, and it is a stunner. I paid around £1400 for it new a year or so ago, and its a Tobacco Burst as well. -

MarkBass Traveller 2x10 p - TRV 102p by Prime_BASS
Musicman20 replied to Prime_BASS's topic in Amps & Cabs
Thanks for that. How does it compare to the BF cabs you've had? What made you change to MB cabs? -
I've seen this kind of setup before. Ignore it at all costs. Basically, it revolves around typical greedy promoters who take the £'s home whilst thinking the band should think themselves lucky for having a gig. Id rather have a band practice.
Or get a a luthier to reprofile the neck.
Possibly, but Musicman basses lose value if mods are made. They are one of the large manufacturers that buyers tend to keep stock. -
And, to ask for the moon on a stick, would any of these have the same 3EQ option? Gareth will be laughing at me now, given my abundant praise for the Stingray... am just thinking of if my hands get any worse
I think you'd be best with the Musicman Stingray SLO Special...same Stingray as you have but a slimmer more Jazz-like Sterling (USA) neck. Or, if you fancy having two, pickup a Musicman USA Sterling as well, which will have the same (ish) 3EQ, but a three way switch as well as a ceramic pup which gives much more of a middy aggressive tone. Its the same 'style' as a Stingray, but slightly smaller body, slimmer neck, nice neck contour at the back, and slightly different scratchplate. -
This Sterling by Musicman thing is so confusing, The OP needs an EBMM Sterling not a Sterling by Musicman. The SB14 is the equivillent from the cheaper Sterling by Musicman range. The Sterling has a ceramic pickup and maybe a different preamp afaik too, that said so does my black ray 5 and I love it!
+1. Its the USA Sterling you are after They Musicman range can get quite confusing, but once you get there you feel like a right nerd as you can pick facts out of your memory all the time, hahah! -

Small and lightweight: what should I look into?
Musicman20 replied to 1976fenderhead's topic in Amps and Cabs
If you want to, I would definitely try the RH450 or 750. They have really impressed me at gigs since day one and the DI is fantastic. It's implementation of tube tone is a love/hate thing. I personally like it. It's very 'middy' and punchy in my opinion, whereas the Genz is more bloomy and bass heavy. -
Very impressed with this seller: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ernie-Ball-2736-Cobalt-Regular-Slinky-5-String-bass-strings-45-130-/370599422937?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item5649726bd9#ht_2255wt_689 My set arrived very quickly and much cheaper than the shops.

What Bass do you swear buy? Any thoughts on Sandberg?
Musicman20 replied to bassickman's topic in Bass Guitars
Any Musicman bass. Fender are great but their quality is far too hit and miss. -
Just ordered a 5 string set of the chap on ebay who has a large store for strings. Much cheaper than the shops...PM me if you want details. Brand new, sealed, etc. My Ray 5HS is in need of a new set, and I fancied trying something new, but still EB.
Really crap. Really, really crap. That's why everybody is recommending them.
Sounds crap. Bet they suck the mids. Ordered a box anyway
