What did you think?

Just thinking that a TRS --> TS cable would be the way to go here? Be interested what expression pedals folks are using with their Helix kit and if they are Helix specific kit, whether these are completely fine to use with non Helix pedals (which I would assume / hope they would be)?

I've got rid of my lockdown beard. Will need to regrow to get the whole thing a bit more authentic.

I don't have a kid, unfortunately, but otherwise a good suggestion.

@krispn - seems like using the SY-1 is child's play! Clip posted on the TB SY-1 thread, in organ mode, of one of the guys with his son. Sweet!

As you'll shortly no doubt be finding out: it's pretty darned good in passive mode, but switch over to active and you'll find it has a seriously versatile EQ! 3 band and mid EQ point selector switch.

Cheers Woody, ok I think honours (almost) even here ie no tap tempo in the pedal itself but accessible via an external footswitch which would, however, preclude you using an expression pedal. I've tried it with an expression pedal and found it pretty difficult to match the ARP speed to the beat, so tap tempo maybe the way to go here. Time to make sure that input on the pedal is accessible on my board, again, then! Out of interest, have you yourself or come across anyone else using it in tap tempo mode? If so, what sort of footswitch were you / they using?

Agreed on the Arp - although that could be solved if the pedal had a tap tempo, which the SY-1 doesn't as far as I'm aware @Woodinblack please jump in, if I have that wrong. As for songs, not got that far yet. I think I'll need to see the band's reaction (if and when we're ever allowed to gig again) to my mini board's effects and see if I can sneak them in. They're a conservative bunch and have been very used to bass-->amp with nothing in between and they like the bass to sit in or below the mix rather than above it. I suspect synth bass may be more relevant to originals bands e.g. stuff that @BigRedX does, but I'm just putting them out there as potentially usable sounds, particularly given how well the SY-1 tracks which is going to be key.

Here's a couple of patches from the Boss SY-1, which have been a long time in coming given that Woody and I got our SY-1s a year back! This is in firstly in Bass setting 6 mode and in Arp setting 6 mode. The second track started with a filter added to start with which I kicked off half way through so you can hear the 'clean' synth. Both potentially "usable" synth sounds? SY1 - Bass6.wav SY1 - Arp6.wav

Tip: B1-4 placement at end of your board Took me far too long to realise this, but for me the answer is end of the board! The two key minuses of putting it at the end, for me, are not being able to have the Zoom's octaves early in the signal chain, or being able to feed octave and fuzz from the Zoom into a filter pedal. The three big plusses are a) being able to access the whole pedal board when using it is as a headphone amp b) (perhaps less important) having modulation effects at the end to impact everything that's gone before and c) this was the killer for me: the drum machine, which is great for practice and laying down tracks into a looper, is (quite rightly) in parallel with the Zoom's fx channel and is not impacted by it, but will be affected by any pedals coming after it. So if you want a clean drum from your Zoom, you'll need the B1-4 at the end of your signal chain.

I get what you're saying. But we've not really defined what it means to be "creative". Every time we write, draw or put a short video clip together we are being creative and I think more folk have the ability to be creative than they realise. A bit of guidance (aka training) can give folk the tools and confidence to express their creativity. So I guess that puts me in the opposite camp to the OP.

Nah - just really pleased that you're liking it a lot so far! Feel free to post a few pics on this thread - which seems to be a repository for Ibby SR lovers - although my bi-annual campaign to persuade Woody to change the thread title to something broader continues to meet with steely resistance 😁 Just had a little trip down memory lane on the thread and turns out that I bought my first Ibby (a 4 string as it happens - I hadn't taken up 5 strings back then!) exactly 3 years ago to the day.

And here's a clip from @Jonathan Bee (which I hope he doesn't mind me posting!) This uses the Tron effect on the Zoom B3. This really is very good - a real shame that this effect is not available in the later B3N and B1-4 models. Filter 12 - B3 Tron (JB).mp3

Been a while since we've had some posts on here - but I know that the filter and synth crew have recently seen a burst of activity! I managed to snag a used Proton V4 a couple of months back. The Proton V4 feels like it's captured the essence of the 3Leaf GR2 in a more compact package (always welcome for those of us with limited pedal board space!) and it's pretty easy to dial in a good sound. Congrats on the Ibby SR Premium - great choice! Not surprised at all that you went for that instead of the Ibby Standard. My two Ibby SR 5'ers both have the 2+3 as above. Others go for 3+2 or perhaps even more commonly on the Fender style headstock 4+1. Just one other make of bass in my herd adopts the 2+3 and that's Ken Smith. So it seems to me that Ibby are in very good company! If you were basing it on weight of strings alone, then 2+3 i.e. B+E and A+D+G is more evenly balanced than the 3+2 alternative. So there is perhaps some method in the madness!

Yeah agreed, the metering is super helpful on the Becos. And to provide that even on the mini is just indicative of how feature rich their pedal range is. Wish Helix did the same on the HX FX and Stomp and not just on the their larger units.

I know you're selling your P34 @dave_bass5, but I also know you always give a super honest opinion including "warts and all" when it's appropriate to do so!

I play all but one of my basses actively. Tech 21 VTDI works a treat as a tone shaper to provide a core sound and I can then use the EQ on my basses to overlay eg treble cut for Motown etc. or have an EQ patch set up on a multi fx ready to kick in. Don't think it should be a problem at all.

It's no more a barrier to being musically creative, than being able to read and write is to telling stories.

I've just used vlc media player to convert a file from wav to mp3. It was definitely noisier. Right I'm a convert to wav files!

Haha, in which they are without excuses! But is it the case that if would need to do something to first convert the wav file to MP3 - if so that's extra effort on their part, that they could be forgiven for not wanting to bother with, or will their phones do the conversion for them automatically so that it can play the wav files?
