How can you make any popularity list? It's all down to taste, innit? Even influence. How can you say this guy was more influential than this guy? Granted, you can say someone is hugely influential, but how influential is anyone's guess. I mean Steve Harris was influential to me, as was Geddy, but I would say, Geezer Butler wasn't cos they were a bit before my time. I know that he was influential to some people though. I just find these lists a bit off. Fair enough if it's going by sales of albums, but I've never been asked in a poll or anything!

Funny things that people say to you at gigs
ubit replied to Tom Brookes Music's topic in General Discussion
I usually get people talking to me whilst I'm not only playing, but singing! -
Any Kings of Leon song will be pretty easy because the bass player admits, he's only just starting to learn how to play the thing. The first two albums are ridiculously easy. He was the relative who was asked to join the band because the rest of the family had formed it. Lucky break!

Alright Now - What do you do in the verses?
ubit replied to allighatt0r's topic in General Discussion
I have grown to not like the song but if it was to come on the radio, I think, I would be filled with a feeling of nostalgia and would enjoy hearing it, although I wouldn't stick it on myself. Fact is, it's a great song, just been done to death. Songs do have a fashion period, I mean there's lots of songs we used to play that were great and everyone knew them, but if we were to resurrect them, folks would be like, what the f***s that? That's an old song. Classic rock songs you can get away with for longer, but they are still old songs. Certain songs that are in the charts might be great for a while, but soon lose their lustre. -
Well I play bass and sing lead vocals, so do I get the prize for doing most in the band?

My house has 5 steps straight away , then there's the car, across roads, possibly up more stairs, through narrow gaps, sometimes with drunken revellers blocking the way. Yes, I like the lightweight Barefaced cabs. As for the sound. I have an SVT2 and its set up level with, if anything a slightly sad face eq, so I'm certainly not finding too many mids. Maybe different amps give different characteristics.

I don't know where you get the more middle bit from Mcnach! I find it's got tremendous bottom end. More than enough!

I posted this same thing in the industry standard thread. My mate did a tour with the band Coast and I lent him my Geddy Lee bass. He absolutely loved it and said that the rest of the band kept asking, did you bring the Fender? They said it sat in the mix much better than previous basses had. There's something to be said when non bass playing musicians state a preference for a particular guitar.

Is there such a thing as an Industry Standard

A mate of mine has been playing with the band Coast, and I lent him my Geddy Lee to use on the tour. He loved it and said all the rest of the band commented on how it sat in the mix so much better than previous guys basses had. They all loved the woody, ethereal sound that comes from an instrument not of the active leanings. -
I can't comment on those particular cabs but I have the big twin cab and its immense! I've used loads of different cabs throughout the years and the Barefaced is, by far, the best I've ever played through!

Precision type bass volume control. Always on full?
ubit replied to interpol52's topic in General Discussion
I use the volume control all the time when we are rehearsing, just to save me going to the amp to change it. When we are playing live, it's up full all the time. -
It looks like some hellish abomination created by a certain Dr Frankenstein!

How to get 'new' strings in 2 mins (without boiling or cleaning)
ubit replied to Drax's topic in General Discussion
It doesn't work that good. I've tried it. I stick mine in the dishwasher, works a treat! -
Alright Now - What do you do in the verses?
ubit replied to allighatt0r's topic in General Discussion
We used to play that and it was no problem for me. I'm the singer! -
To be fair, he would find it hard playing fence wire after being used to guitar strings. I play bass all the time in every song and I don't get tired by playing. I sometimes get cramps, but that's more with digging in too much if I'm not hearing myself.
Yes you can actually, there are plenty of examples of overpriced crap out there.
The Heil PR35 is NOT among them! -
Not hard to play, but I sing too and believe it or not I'm struggling like hell to sing and play over jailbreak. That simple bassline is really hard to mumble over!

Well done mate, it's all downhill from here
You don't do covers exactly like the originals do you? If you did, you might as well have a DJ playing a CD.
That's a good advert for a cover band. We are so good that you won't be able to tell the difference from the real thing , so we're just going to put cd's on instead !
I think that as long as a song isn't too butchered, as long as it's familiar, the typical audience member will hear the soundtrack inside their head, not the song being played in front of them. The ones who'll definitely notice are the musicians in the audience and any agents who've popped in to check you out.
Yeah, there was no one more annoyed than me , as being the bass player as well as lead vocalist, I was thinking, that whole set was rotten, my bass kept cutting out, it must have sounded sh*t. Everyone danced though, and complemented us and that's the part that equally baffles and annoys me. No bugger noticed my hard worked bass sound was not driving the song along. I'm sure SOMEONE out there must have noticed, but the vast majority of the drunken revellers were blissfully unaware that the bottom end was in and out for a bit, then out for a long period before I could rescue the situation during the break. I'm totally behind the ethos that the bass is one of the most integral parts of a band, but what I'm saying is most punters haven't a clue if, as I say, there's a beat, melody and some singing. Once they recognise a song, they will make up the bits missing in their heads especially if it's a dance where people want to enjoy it. My amp worked perfect at the next and every gig since, so the dodgy electrics must have been the culprit.
To be fair though, at 2.5 times the price of an SM58 you'd expect it to be better.
You can't argue with "you get what you pay for" can you? -
Oi, stop pinching my set People only notice the bass when something goes wrong or it stops. FACT!
But that's what I'm saying, bass was starting and stopping. Some songs had none and NO ONE. Noticed. They were all up dancing and having a ball. All they were interested in was the beat and the melody and obviously, the vocals, which I supply too, so I was powerless to do anything about it as I was trying to keep the show rolling.

I never have a problem. My girlfriend says it's your hobby, enjoy it. She bought me a Gibson Les Paul bass for my birthday. I realise I'm in the minority and am very lucky but she comes from a family that are very musical. Her brothers are both virtuosos on the guitar and one brothers wife is the exact opposite. She scorns his expensive hobby and thinks it's a waste of time. It's a shame as this boy can get a sound out of anything with strings. I think that's why my girlfriend is so keen for me to enjoy my music, because she gets so annoyed to see her brother getting such a hard time. She never bothers when I just have to have another guitar

This is a bad attempt... Possibly the worst!

That's a very rare Fender "forestry commission short plank" much sought after in luthier circles!
