[/quote] But that's what I'm saying, bass was starting and stopping. Some songs had none and NO ONE. Noticed. They were all up dancing and having a ball. All they were interested in was the beat and the melody and obviously, the vocals, which I supply too, so I was powerless to do anything about it as I was trying to keep the show rolling.

I never have a problem. My girlfriend says it's your hobby, enjoy it. She bought me a Gibson Les Paul bass for my birthday. I realise I'm in the minority and am very lucky but she comes from a family that are very musical. Her brothers are both virtuosos on the guitar and one brothers wife is the exact opposite. She scorns his expensive hobby and thinks it's a waste of time. It's a shame as this boy can get a sound out of anything with strings. I think that's why my girlfriend is so keen for me to enjoy my music, because she gets so annoyed to see her brother getting such a hard time. She never bothers when I just have to have another guitar

I recently quoted in another thread about a gig we did last year in a barn. The electrics were terrible and all during the first set, my valve amp kept cutting out. There would be bass one minute, then half a song with nothing. My performance suffered immensely. As soon as we took a break, I set up a DI so I could bypass my back line, then once satisfied, I went for a drink. Loads of people came and told us, that was great. We even handed out cards and were asked to play at a festival. Just last week, we got a call from the organiser asking us to do his wedding! All from this gig with hardly any bass! So I agree, most audiences, musos excepted, wouldn't notice that you are playing a bass that is different to what the other guys are playing and if they hear guitar and drums, they are happy. It's all a bit annoying when you have dedicated your life to playing bass!

I did have to laugh right enough. I was watching a clip of the live from Daryls house series when they were having dinner in this beautiful setting, discussing how much they enjoyed their job, but still coming out with, oh but it's such hard work, and I thought, please? I know it's a lot of touring and travelling, but I have to do that in my job and I certainly don't get treated like they do. Hard work is very subjective and spoilt rock stars should remember that there's a lot worse ways to make a living.

All I know is kids will hate what their parents listen to. It's the law!

It's funny, I was devastated a while back when I first found out, one of my favourite bands, Salmonella Dub, who have awesome heavy dub basslines, don't even have a bass player. It's all samples and keyboard wizardry. Industry standard right out the window!

[/quote] No offence, but is that not what you do with an autobiography? If you write one, it doesn't give people a right to behave like they know you personally. I realise fame comes at a price, but some people know how to handle it better than others. I suspect Peart just finds it hard to talk to someone he has nothing in common with apart from the fact they like his music. A bit like the drunken slob who won't leave you alone after the Saturday night gig down at the dog and duck.

Agree with last two posts. Technique must be the first thing you tackle. Speed happens naturally after a while. This is why so many people get frustrated when learning new techniques. They try to run before walking. Make sure everything is clean and clear and you will gradually speed up. A metronome might sound ridiculous, but is an essential tool when working on smooth technique.

I watched a clip on yoo choob of Daryl hall off of " live from Daryls house" fame, ( absolutely superb series if you haven't caught it) and he was walking through an airport and folk were shouting out " hi Daryl" to him and I thought , that would annoy me, because these people don't know him on a first name basis. Maybe that's the price of fame. He was clearly in a hurry and folks kept stopping him for pictures, which he very graciously, posed for. I can see why these rock stars wear sunglasses all the time. It's to hide their dead eyes as they smile for the umpteenth time for some random photograph. Maybe we should not be so quick to judge famous folks attitudes when confronting " fans" !

My first taste of Rush was 2112 not long after it came out. I very quickly collected the back catalogue after that, and I even like Caress of steel, which every knows, you just don't play in front of birds, cos they just won't get it! Quite simply, I'm of the " they can do no wrong" camp, and I'm happy there

I reiterate, I am not at all bothered that someone says they don't like my favourite band. Everyone has different tastes. I posted the wreckers to show that they DO play songs with heart and soul. JTUK obviously just doesn't like them and doesn't want to publish his own tastes because he knows he's going to get a tit for tat slagging of his likes, which is fair enough. They have been inducted into the Rock and roll hall of fame, somewhat belatedly right enough , sold millions of albums, have inspired millions of musicians, famous ones too, are masters of their craft, are stinking rich. I don't think they care if some folks don't care for their music.

They are my all time favourite band. I like lots of other bands and genres, but Rush are my all time favourites and I'm not in the least bit annoyed if someone says they don't like them. Everyone is different. My girlfriends family are Rush daft, but her sisters husband hates them. It's not a problem. He just doesn't get invited when we all go see Them !
