1. I have an old ABM 2x 10 and I love it. It's been relegated to being the electronic drum amp when we rehearse, but it was my main gigging amp for years. I remember playing a shared gig one time and the bass player from the other band complimented me on the bottom end I had. At least I think he was talking about my sound!!
2. Lots of professional bands have lyric sheets all over the place. It's just that they are not usually so obvious!
3. I can't say I've ever hated a band that much and loved the bass work. Usually the bass will make me like them. One band that sticks out for amazing bass and slightly , meh... Songs, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned them, is Madness. Some of the bass in their early stuff , is immense.
4. Sorry, I thought you meant their playing was overrated. I suppose it's taste again, innit?
5.
Embrace your mids
This! Flatten that eq or even get the sad face eq, either way, your sound will improve. Get rid of those nasty boominess lows!
6. People will Nick anything that's not nailed down , won't they?
7.
Muse. I don't particularly dislike them but I think they are a bit overrated as a band.
Muse overrated ??? Have you actually listened to these guys playing? They are phenomenal musicians!
8.
+1 for The Smiths though really I don't tend to single out individuals much as a punter, its the whole package for me as a unit that has to 'do it' for me to keep interested.
I liketh the Smiths....sorry wrong thread. Some seriously good bass in their songs. This charming man is awesome!
9.
I was explaining the whole thing to my (non musician) girlfriend. She gave me the wise point of view that to the non-musos in the audience, there's so much stuff on stage (mic stands, PA stands, light stands, backline, drums etc) that the uninitiated have little to no clue what any of it does. They're just there to listen to the music and watch the band perform. Slipping the odd look at a lyric folder means nothing to them at all
See this also alludes to the thread about people knowing what the bass is in the band. It seems alien to us that no one would know what the different instruments do, but , even I can remember far enough back, when I listened to songs on the radio, I never knew there was bass and guitar. It was just all a nice noise. The general public, bless them, don't know what everything does. That stand could be music notes for all they know. Or, as stated by Nick, no one knows what it is, or cares for that matter. It's only other musos that get snobby about it and let's be fair. How often do we need to worry about them?
10. Well done Les, we are here to support you. No one will judge. You are among like minded souls. The first step is admitting you use. From there , we can work at the reasons behind your use and how we can stop you using once and for all!
11. He's obviously not the sharpest sandwich in the box!
12. I can understand why some people think Ashdown make poor gear. It's all down to taste and personal experience. I, for instance, hate Hartke gear, purely because I owned a combo, which had a dreadful thin, tinny sound. I know lots of people like Hartke gear, in fact many professional players endorse Hartke systems, so clearly the top end stuff is better than the cheaper line, so maybe we should not be so quick to write off a manufacturer based on a single fleeting brush with their wares.
13. I have recently stopped my monthly subscription to a tab site, because I was finding more and more of them were quite clearly wrong. When I cancelled, I got a mail asking why? I told him, because some of the tabs, I would need to be ambidextrous to play. He said, oh, that's because we rely on people sending tabs in. If I'm paying, I want the tabs to be done by professionals , who have a decent clue about what's going on, not just by random people, who jump all over the neck playing impossible changes etc.!
14.
I used Ashdown for several years and it was never muddy nor indistinct but always solid and clear.
Me too, I can never understand the downer so many people have against them.
15.
I my Fender Precisions....
+2
16. I suppose I'm lucky in that, when I play in the house, I have the amp turned up quite loud. I don't have to use headphones. It seems to me that headphones is the issue here. I have 3 P basses, and they all sound great on their own. I have 3 J 's too, which all sound great too. It's funny but I can change the sound by turning the little knob things on the front. Try it.
17. I can remember going to a school dance and there was a band playing. Before they started , I remember looking at the guitars sitting there and thinking the bass just looks so much cooler than the guitars with its long neck and fewer strings. Back then everyone wanted to be the guitar player, so I thought, this is my chance to be important cos no one else wants to do this.
18.
Only saw her on the TV at the Glastonbury gig... that seemed quite a show. How much help she had, I don't know but then she wouldn't be alone in that..by any means.
Yip, I've heard Motley Crüe playing " live " on some show in 'Merica and they had backing tracks. Now it was argued that they were still live, but I think live is totally live, so I was under impressed .
19.
But then that opens up the whole "is sampling stealing?" debate (for the record, as long as it's credited then no, it isn't!). Does he have an overinflated sense of self-worth? Undoubtedly. Is he a disrespectful twat by doing what he did to Beck, Taylor Swift and others? No argument here. Is he a talentless hack? Not by a long stretch.
I'm not saying he's talenless, just that I don't like him or his music. I like rap, as said, Cypress hill, Tupac among others. I just don't like Kanye and if someone else does, bully for them. It won't change my outlook on his talent or lack of. I do think he is over rated, but again that's down to taste. What kind of world would it be if we all liked the same things ?
20. Louder as long as it's a quality sound. Loud bass through a poor system just sounds horrible. We've got magic subs now and what a difference they make!
21. My mate got a cheap guitar for Christmas when we were 14 and started getting lessons. When he told us, my other mate and I said, right let's start a band. I'll get a bass , you get a drum kit. We did although I was last and had a sh*tty little homemade bass. We really sucked at first but I still remember the first time we played in front of anyone. It was two girls we were trying to impress and me and the guitarist did alright now minus singing and minus the solo ! How boring would that be ? But we thought we were great. Fast forward 35 years and myself and the guitarist are still in a band together but our drummer left to run his family business years ago. Great memories !
22.
Well that's where we differ, because I would not!
Nor I, I like a bass to sound good obviously, but it's got to look good too. That's part of the charm of different basses. A guitar is something sexy. If you are happy to play a garish, horrible looking thing, you are further tarnishing the reputation of bassists to be the dull one that sits at the back supplying a necessary evil to the flashy guitarist, and not be an equally flamboyant star of the band! Ok, pink would be flamboyant, but not in a good, rock star way
23.
Is that the mag with the nude fat birds boxing?
How do I subscribe to that one ???
24.
"Minor cosmetic scratches on the back" - it looks like it has been mauled by a bear
Your right! That's a serious minor cosmetic scratches situation!
25. Even the sound of your bass sitting down compared to standing up. The difference when you first attempt to play live can throw you. It's not what your used to. Lots of little things can conspire to make your first ever gig a disaster. Playing in a bedroom, as stated by Blue, is a safe environment. It's better to get used to live playing or at least standing up playing as much as possible so that you can ensure it all goes to plan when the big night arrives.
