I was driving back from work and had the iPod on full blast on random, when a U2 song came on. I thought to myself , I'm not a fan even though I have a few of their albums in my collection, but they do have some pretty good songs. It's just Bonio that puts me off them. Maybe it's subconsciously, because his attitude annoys me, but I just can't love them because of him. I find Simple Minds to be similar because of Jim Kerr. Are there any really good bands out there that you dislike purely because of one larger than life member?
Im going to see death cab in Birmingham tomorrow night, chastity belt are also supporting, hopefully they were just having a bad night then 😂
Let me know how you get on then mate

The Dead Daisies supported by Wild Lies at the Cathouse in Glasgow. Great bands in a great venue. Can't wait!

YES! They are awesome!

I am quite a prolific gig goer and like to think I have a fairly eclectic taste. I was wondering who you all have seen lately and what they were like. I only ask because last night we went to see the excellent Death Cab For Cutie in Glasgows 02. They were superb as expected. The support however, were, at least to us, rank rotten. They are called Chastity Belt and if you look them up on YouTube, they are passable, though not particularly my taste. Live however, they are dire. No stage craft, out of tune playing and singing, bum notes etc. You name it, they were afflicted by it. I would even go as far as saying, they are the worst band I've ever seen live on a big stage. Maybe they had a bad night, but somehow I don't think so. Let us know your experiences good or bad of others, as a warning/ tip so that we might go fore armed to future gigs.

Being the "house" band at a jam night. What does it involve ?
ubit replied to Les's topic in General Discussion
It's always blues and rock classics, with the odd singer/songwriter on acoustic guitar, who generally plays pretty rubbish songs what they wrote ,which is why I avoid them like the plague -
I had most of their albums, which have been lost along the way. I have now downloaded the complete back catalogue. It's great hearing all this superb music again!
Apparently the Captain Pugwash thing is largely urban myth. It is said that there is a character Master Mate which, if could be misheard as Master Bate if you want to hear it thus. Roger the Cabin Boy and Seaman Stains are apparently total fabrication.
I can confirm that that is urban myth. There was no master Bates, it was Tom the cabin boy and there was no seaman Stains. I know cos I used to love it!
I'm the exact opposite. I'm much more interested in the lyrics than the bass line (unless it is something with meaningless lyrics such as most RHCP songs.) This is possibly why Billy Bragg is my all-time favourite performer.
And possibly why he's just about my least favourite, along with Rod Stewart, Dire Straights, the Doors .........
-
I never think too much about lyrics. I always hear about someone saying, oh this song was such an inspiration to me when I was going through such and such, and I'm like, are you 'avin a laugh? He's 'avin a laugh. I listen to melodies and tunes and enjoy songs from there. Sometimes I'm amazed when someone tells me a song is about whatever cos I have never listened that closely. There's some real shockers coming out here !
If he was a "mate" in the true sense of the word, then he would take on board the other band member's suggestions and try to solve the problem, instead of dismissing their suggestions.
Again, it's not always that easy. I have a mate who is great at being passively aggressive and an expert at getting what he wants. He is also our guitarist. There's never black and white when it comes to friendships. The op said he didn't want to go down this route and everyone still thinks kick him out, it's easy.
Barefaced 610 Job done 😆
That's just pure bass porn mate!!!

I used to laugh at people's faces when I wheeled the 9 stone monster into small pubs. They see big speakers and they think, f***! They are gonna be loud! They don't realise that you don't have to crank it all the way.

are there any super bands with poor bass players?
ubit replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
I was with Bilbos comments all the way up until he said Geddy Lee isn't that good a bass player and Neil Peart isn't that good a drummer. Jeezo! What the hell do you reckon makes a good player then? -
A lot of people seem to think, just get rid of this guy, but it's not always that easy. Has anyone asked if this guy is maybe a mate as well as a band member? Maybe he owns the van that takes them to gigs or something. The op has stated that he doesn't want to go down this road, so obviously saying dump him, is not an option .
I'd say 'less'. Quite a lot less. But if you're vertically challenged, I apologise unreservedly.
Obviously it wasn't right at ear level, but neither is the Ampeg 8x10. Thing is as long as it's thereabouts, you get the throw, certainly much more than a 4x10 cab or similar. I'm not exactly basketball material, but I'm no Peter Dinklage either
-
I briefly used a Genz Benz 6x10 which isn't a kick in the arse off fridge size wise and I loved it purely for the fact the speakers were at ear level ( more or less) it was the enormous weight that stopped me from using it. The sound was lovely right enough , but I'm more than happy with the super twin. I reckon it's the speaker height that's the deal breaker with big speaker enclosures!
-
I've compromised and have an SVT2 pro with a Barefaced super twin and dare I say.... What a sound!
-
I took to building guitars and I have made some bloody good ones for a fraction of the price. Great fun too!
-
Also, big bands like to throw pics to the audience
-
I have dropped pics lots of times in the past before I opted for the finger style, but I think they put lots on so that you can grab one of them without having to fumble about and select one mid song. It's like they saturate the selection to avoid delays.

I know, I was being hilarious. But I stand by the fact that percussive instruments can be played any number of ways, dampened, side swiped, whatever, but if you hit them harder, they are louder. It's basic physics. I can't understand how you are making an argument of this fact Sigh
...but one is not supposed to 'hit' drums, but to 'play' them. It's not like chopping wood. There are also many ways to dampen drums or render them almost silent, if there is too much testosterone flowing. Why isn't the drummer at the back of a TOTP shoot deafening everyone..? It's been treated, that's why. An anecdote..? I may..? Thank you... We're back in the late '50s, at Southville Junior School. All of us kids were invited out into the playground for a road safety lesson from the police. Amongst other animations, we were lined up on the grass to watch a police Triumph ride past us. We were asked to judge which 'run' was the fastest. Three times he went past, firstly moderately, second with a mighty roar, the third run almost silent. No hesitation; we all judged the second run to have been the fastest. Not at all; we'd been fooled. That loud run was with a slipping clutch in 1st, the last run was in top gear, at tick-over, and was, in fact much faster than the others. We all learned, at that tender age, that one should not judge speed from the sound, but by keen and careful observation. The moral..? Playing too loud is not, automatically, good drumming; quite the opposite. Don't be fooled into thinking that loudness = goodness. We school kids learnt that at the age of 8 or 9. Some never learn, it would seem. (Sigh... )
Ok, if you "play" the drums harder, they get louder and if you "play "them softly they get quieter. Doesn't really matter a jot how fast they are going!
As a DD fan, I've always liked JT's sound and I thought it sounded pretty good. Cut right through the mix.
I concur. I was never a fan in their heyday, but always loved his sound!
