SOLD . So, the bass - i'm going to let someone else enjoy this bass as i barely use it - it's too good to collect dust in my man cave. It's in great condition, odd ding but nothing unusual, crackly mid pot but functions great. Awesome low B string with no floppiness, preamp is 18V and is excellent, very versatile. This is a surprisingly good 5 string bass for the money!!! Googled blurb: The Ibanez BTB555 5-String Bass Guitar, Maple/Mahogany Body, 5-piece Maple/Walnut Neck, Ibanez Pickups, 3-band EQ, Natural Finish. An electrifying, high quality 5-String bass with rich, clean and versatile tones. The Ibanez BTB555 is built with all the top shelf materials, delivering rich, electrifying tones. The BTB555 takes the traditional formula of powerful tones produced by a massive body and substantial neck and then adds an even longer 35 inch scale neck, the right mix of select woods and high-tech appointments. The BTB555 has a unique off-center line neck shape, which follows the natural path of the thumb as it moves up the neck, making upper fretwork as easy as playing the lower frets. The 35 inch neck scale provides superior articulation with no "flopping" and solid sustain (great low . A 5-piece maple and walnut neck, maple top and back plus mahogany body, 18-volt active Vari-Mid preamp, Ibanez pickups and a Monorail 2 (MR-II) bridge deliver the rich tones without interference from other strings. The main features of the Ibanez BTB555 include: An electrifying, high quality 5-String bass with rich, clean and versatile tones 35 inch neck scale Hi-tech NeutrikR locking jacks offer secure and stable connection 18-volt circuitry offers more headroom 5 piece BTB5 Maple/Walnut Neck Maple Top And Back Mahogany body 24 Medium frets MR-2 bridge (19mm string spacing) Ibanez Neck Pickup Ibanez MK1 Bridge Pickup Vari-Mid IIIB 3-band eq (18v) Chrome Hardware Rosewood Fingerboard with Abalone dot inlays Pics available on request, here's a stock pic for now:

Any thoughts or recommendations for a 500W (ish) micro amps out there?
Raslee replied to Raslee's topic in Amps and Cabs
In my research getting to this point i had tried an Aguilar TH500 which was ok sounding, good mid sweep control but it didn't have a wow factor for me...although someone put a thread up about it not being a slapper's choice, i thought it sounded great for slap. Tried an Eden WTX, was ok but not the thick defined sound that i remembered Eden's to have like the WT550's, was a bit lack luster. Tried the notorious Ampeg PF500, brilliant sound, and nearly bought this but the reliability stories left me a bit too hesitant. Also tried an LM3, enjoyed this and using the filters again (have past owned an LM2) and this was the deciding factor to go with Markbass again. Would have liked to try a GK Fusion but none around here. -
Congrats man When you say the tube sounded less sterile, did it make the sound warmer?
Cheers dude, Yeah perhaps a little warmer, certainly not Genz Streamliner or Orange Terror bass territory but it added a little subtle warmth over the full solid state setting. In the solid state setting is the typical LM super clean sound, what i would consider hifi. Interestingly i hear the difference more when trying a reggae dub sound, i.e. filters full on, bass up and high's down...the tube made it fat wooly sounding and the solid state made it fat and defined...i liked both. -
Congrats Lee, they are one that was on my wish list. The only thing that concerned me was I read somewhere (so I DON'T KNOW it to be true) that all Markbass Tube amps need to be sent off to have tubes replaced. IE, user can not replace them because they are soldered or something? Would be great if an owner could say this is cobblers. Then I could put one back on my thought list. Enjoy the amp, bet it's fab.
Cheers karl, Yeah i read similar regarding the tubes. But thinking about it I've never had a tube ditch out on me yet although it would have been nice to have the flexibility to change tubes should one wish to do so. I've given it a thrashing this afternoon and loved it; i've missed those VLE/VPF filters, helps me find a sound quickly and both full on for instant reggae vibes. A lot of people say you can't hear the difference between the solid state and tube setting, well i'm deaf and i could here the tube had a less sterile sound although admittedly it is subtle. Despite initially looking at 500W amps I eventually opted for the 800W to have the headroom, and a back up to my Carvin BX1500 if i use it with the reggae crew, but i'm mostly aiming to use the MB with my functions band - soul/funky stuff. Now to decide what cab, thinking either an MB NY 12" or 15" -

Thought it best I bought this thread to a conclusion...I went for a Markbass Tube 800 in the end, yet to try it out in anger but first impressions are great -
Here's my '62 P Bass in black and very nice it is too. Sorry for the poor quality IPhone pics but haven't had time to photograph it properly. I had the same problem as "Three" in that the bridge saddles were so "reliced" they had frozen up and couldn't be adjusted at all so I replaced with some quality brass units from Ebay for about a tenner! It's got quite a chunky neck and I currently have Roto 45-105 Jazz Flats on it nd it sounds amazing, especially with all the tone rolled off! The second shot shows the addition of bridge/pickup covers. I think this really sets the bass off beautifully !
That's stunning, i like

Yes shame more people aren't willing to give these amps a go -they are brilliant. Guess as you say bit of a unknown quantity this side of the pond. As you know i have the BX1500 and have no plans to part with it for a long time, great clean sounding amps with masses of flexibility and they're very light too. Really great classy amps, buyers would not be disappointed at all....wish mine had the funky fascia lights like your does. Have a bump for a great amp

Any recommendations ?? First my Fender logo fell off the top cab which i subsequently lost....now my Hartke logo fell off my XL - tragedy i tell ya !!! Glad the speakers can take the heavy reggae dub sounds...i definitely need an endorsement testing cabs at their lowest frequencies
-
Cheers guys, yes certainly a brilliant cab. PM's replied, lots of interest - first come first served and all that The cab is of course all original. The cab really replicates what your amp is, for example when i used the Streamliner for a while, which is a very close old school valve sounding amp, then it did have a great old school sound...but equally with my modern Carvin it does indeed have that hifi clarity...it is mostly dependent on your amp, this cab does not add coloration say like Ampeg does.
I have ordered directly from Kent Armstrong pickups UK (http://www.armstrongpickups.co.uk/), Aaron from them was very helpful. £100 all in, and pickup should be here next week so I will post my experiences of it. They came recommended by another BC'er friend (Bobvbass), and his tone always been really nice so I thought I would copy! Schaller seem to be well thought of too. I went for magnetic as feedback a problem in the small rehearsal room and I am happy to sound closer to a pbass if I have to if it saves the aggravation. I tried the Fishman Plat Pro with phase cancel etc, tried a feedback buster but just got fed up in the end. Even bought a slimline bass to reduce the size of acoustic chamber.

Kent Armstrong. About £90, excellent. You may need to email Aaron who does the making, but i can't find the addy. Maybe someone can helop with this? You draw the profile of your fingerboard end and he makes one to fit. neat. Fixes with studs or velcro and is almost invisible. EDIT: beaten to it
Nice one guys, that's really helpful. I will give Kent Armstrong a call when i get my DB back from the rehearsal room next week.

I wonder whats going on for the keyboard player for him to act the way he is, of course the drinking appears to be the immediate issue and cannot be tolerated for the professionalism required. However I can't help but think there is most probabaly an unwell person with much more serious issues than his musical vilification.
-
Yes i agree about the visual element, which is largely what we're going for I think in this band, but equally experience for me in playing the DB. The mag pick up option is seeming more logical for what we're aiming for. Has anyone got any suggestions on magnetic pick ups other than the Krivo that Clarky mentioned? Have to say I am really liking the sounds of the Krivo that i've seen on youtube but wondering what else is out there too....better still anyone selling a magnetic pick up

I know i'll miss this amazing cab, probably my favourite cab i've ever owned but it's barely getting used these days now that I have the convenience of a light a Genz Combo with added jack trolley and i'm possibly also looking to go to a 2 1x12" cabs solution for even more flexibility and perhaps fancy trying Markbass again, i may then sell my Genz combo. I have fitted a handle to the top of my cab for ease of transport and butchered the Roqsolid cover by making a hole to get to the handle...however trust me it is much easier to maneuver around now, it's a light cab anyhow with wheels. The cab is in great condition, the usual gigging marks but nothing major. Will sort pics if required. £350 collected, happy to work out a courier at your cost or can meet near the M5 - Devon end. would trade for Markbass amp or MB cabs 1x12" , 15"'s or 4x10" etc - can add cash for any deals. This is the drummer's PA and its facing right at me ...rattle rattle
-
.... keeping your bass away from things that will cause it to vibrate (eg, monitors, loud cabs pointing at it, a wobbly wooden floor etc) should allow you to be free of feedback.
This is a very interesting point. As previously mentioned the drummer, and also the keys player, go through our overly monstrous, and reggae sound system style, PA, .....and of course it's facing right at me - rattle rattle!!!. Hmmm, thinking about the magnetic pick up if i can get more volume and less/no feedback. Of course i'll experiment with what i've got though first. This sounds good http://www.youtube....h?v=WXt6BE2Qk9Q
A preamp with a high pass filter (HPF) is pretty essential for cutting out low end boom. The 'rumble knob on your preamp seems to be a HPF - what did you have that set to? You're also not doing yourself any favours with three 15" speakers - double bass works better with 10" or smaller. If you haven't got a cab with 10s or 8s, then you could try unplugging the 2X15" extension and just use the Fender 1x15 - it will help to reduce some of the boom.
Thanks for your helpful response. I tried the rumble knob at both ends of the spectrum but to no avail. Also I hear what your saying about the 15'S; the reason there is 3 is that it sounds great with the electric bass for that fat dubby old school 70's sound (i've tired every cab combination under the sun and this seems to cut it best), plus the drummer goes through his own PA in our rehearsal room so it is ridiculously stage loud. I still need that fat dub sound for the EB as we plan to continue doing some classic dub stuff in our live set so i will need to switch between DB & EB accordingly. Actually come to think of it my Carvin BX1500 amp has two amps inside, an A & B, I guess i could link the single 15" to the B amp and turn A down when using the DB i.e. DB through the B amp and single 1x15" as you say...maybe an option, but i'm hoping it will be loud and deep enough. I've also been foot switching between EQ's on my amp, parametric for my EB and Graphic EQ for my DB, i'm hoping the graphic will allow me to dial out feedback frequencies quickly. I will have lots to experiment with next week. Do magnetic pick ups reduce feedback? (that may be a silly Q but i thought i'd ask).

Not such a newbie on here but fairly new to DB. My reggae playing friends have taken a new direction into trad ska/rocksteady and I'm wanting to use my cheapy G4M 1/2 DB for a few numbers. After watching some beginner youtubes, and a fatigue inducing DVD that i purchased I've learned a little about technique, holding the DB etc and hand stretches so that's coming on slowly and i feel reasonably confident with several tunes so far...well at least in the living room. The set up on the bass isn't to bad, got a fairly cheap pick up off eBay that has the pads that fit into the bridge and i have a half decent Microlynx M0070 preamp , basically a brown wooden box that has good EQ, a Rumble knob...not sure exactly what that does, a phase button, DI out etc. Sooo, with excitement i took the DB to rehearsal the other night, plugged into my trusty Carvin amp which goes into 3x15"'s (i know...but we used to do a lot of heavy dub stuff and they're just permanently at our practice place...Hartke XL 2x15" @ 400W& a Fender 1x15" @ 300W) and anyhow with the DB it was boom masses of feedback, EQ was flat on the amp and compressor on too. Tried moving around the room with the bass but no luck, when i did mildly calm the feedback by turning the amp gain down the overall volume was really disappointingly quiet...I'm aiming for a big fat bass tone which needs the volume aka Skatalites . As we were auditioning a new guitarist I didn't want to spend all night fiddling to sort the feedback so i ended up playing my elec jazz bass all evening, shame as i was excited to have finally had my DB out of the living room. I'm planning to spend sometime next week with the bass and this rig to see what i can sort out but i'd of course welcome any pointers, advice, from the experienced here, taping the 'F' holes perhaps ??? Also is the Fishman preamp the holy grail for feedback as i've read ? Would i be better off with a magnetic pick up ? Thanks for any support

Just responding to being asked about soundclips, sorry I don't have the tools to record a soundclip but just come across this on Youtube giving my Limelight Precision a good running. The overall sound is far from great, assuming a video camera mic at best, and I know we all have excuses for our dodgy playing at times but i was genuinely dying with manflu at this gig...i looked like i'd been through a car wash by the end of it (plus i'm busking on Johnny B.Good ).
