I have a lovely Focus 1x12" cab - simply a brilliant 1x12"...very conservatively rated at 200W, 8 ohm....it keeps up with room to spare with my 7 piece soul band. £200 + Courier if needed Tradewise I can add cash towards an Ibanez Musician or a Warwick of some description 4 or 5, preferably 90's with slim neck if 4 string, or would consider a Musicman Sterling...maybe Stingray 4/5, Laklands etc. But you can try me on anything, i can only say yes or no. So...fitted the Stinger pre amp, very easy install. Quick overview, I think the stock preamp was closer to perhaps the more modern stingray tone that i remember, but as aforementioned lots of issues with the sound distorting, volume was virtually useless although I'm mindful there was a modification that could be done to solve that - wasn't overly impressed with the EQ tone controls either, although they weren't terrible...i guess after all it is a £250 bass and not a £1250. The Stinger preamp has a more mellow vibe to it, much better EQ control over the sound...quite Pre EB esq...but obviously with a little imagination thrown in In comparison to the stock I was initially a little disappointed with the Stinger as the top end had been smoothed out a little too much for my liking. I thought the pre amp was quite similar in sound to the John East Pre EB having owned one of those in a Pre EB Ray some years ago (why did i sell it ...Stingraypete was right - although i do now own a YOB Jazz from 1974 and we all know Jazz basses are the best basses ever right ), anyhow from memory perhaps the John East pre was a little more refined shall we say than the Stinger, and i think i had mid control too on the East. So back to the Stinger, the real change came from changing the strings on the bass, i put some Roto's on that i had knocking around and the top end Zing was stronger...and of course so was all the little Chili Pepper/RATM licks of my youth. The stinger is still smoother than the stock pre amp, but in a good way, not quite the full parameters of a USA Stingray sound but somewhere in the spectrum, and yes perhaps more akin to the pre EB sound IMO. I too have ordered the GFS MM pickup to see if that adds much; for the price of them i thought its worth a dabble, although again the stock pick up with the Zinger Stinger is a nice combination. The acid test for both sound and playability of the S.U.B. 4 was last night at a club gig with my soul/funktions band. I did once do a gig at the same venue depping for a similar band using a Ray34 and the experience was dire and it really put me off using a Ray in that soul/Motown context...which of course the Precision is king But, alas, I was very surprised, tone rolled down a bit, bass back a bit and going through a Genz Streamliner & Focus 1x12"...i was grinning all night, great tone and presence in the mix - it was a nice rounded funky vibe, good definition and the bass played wonderful, no qualms. The sound engineer who was also a bass player was mightily impressed with the bass itself and tone, even unplugged. Lovely jazz width neck on these S.U.B.S too, so easy on my little chubby hands. Having owned several rays in the past i have to say these S.U.B.s are great for the money...or maybe i was lucky with mine who knows. Visually I the love the wood grain showing through the wine stain and the action is low and sweet, no sharp edges...whats not to like, may get some better tuners one day though. I prefer my tone to the Ray 34 i owned and i don't miss the Slab bodies of the US SUBs either, although they sound great!,...so all in all the SUB & Stinger preamp makes for a good and very interesting Stingray type bass....should be a keeper for a few weeks at least
The GFS MM pro plus p/up arrived today..... and after various messings around with series-parallel switching I decided that it sounded so good in parallel (even though it comes with the red and white wires soldered together for series) that I wired it in parallel and put the pre-amp back in - but with the 25k volume pot mod. I think it sounds absolutely fantastic; just the sound I've been looking - listening? - for. I am a very happy bunny indeed. I'm still interested in how the stinger pre-amp sounds, tho'. The OEM pre is made of tiny, tiny componants and does have a bit of a background hiss. The stinger has 'proper' componants and may be hissless.
Nice, where did you get the pick up from? Those pickguards look nice too, tempted for the aged pearl white also. The Stinger arrived today but it'll probably be tomorrow or the weekend before I fit it.

Musicman experts.Help please, to identify this Musicman Ray 34?

Definitely an oddity -
Funk me, the Red baron has arrived...what a lot of bass for the money! Lovely neck, not a million miles off the stingray sound, PU is hot as mentioned...have stinger preamp on order. Build quality is very, very, impressive although tuners are the weakest point, spankability is good...nearly had a credible 20 second slap riff going on, EQ works - good lows but not as low as a ray, neither is the high the zing but its still a Ray like vibe. low action with no buzzes - had to tweak the truss rod a little to remove buzz at first fret. Looks are beautiful, the wood grain through the wine red stain is rather yummy. All in all a lot of bass for £250 off Thomann...The man from Del Monte says '$exy'...back to some spanking

Which of these would you choose?

Basses In/Basses Out 2014 - And What You've Learned......
Raslee replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
Well not sure i can remember them all.... but Currently in: 1974 Fender jazz (My holy grail, Y.O.B. bass...weighs a tank but i love it despite it not being my main working bass...mostly use for reggae with flats) 2013 Limelight 70's P bass (Fender replica) - Now this is my working bass, light ish, fitted Wizard trad pick up...wonderful for my soul...and the soul band! Farida P bass (The lounge bass) Incoming Sterling 4 S.U.B. bass (Because expensive Ray's never work for me) Out: 1989 Stingray...great bass Lakland JO5 (Best 5 strings ever...of course) Ibanez BTB 5 string (Surprisingly nice and versatile) What have I learned: 1) Well, alas i like P basses and Limelights are simply sublime...but only with jazz width necks haha. 2) If i ever need a 5 I will not be happy until it is a Lakland, 3) When i have a Musicman Stingray it's one of the first things to go...when i don't have a Musicman I want one in my life, currently awaiting a cheapy S.U.B. to mod. 4) Don't under estimate cheaper basses...my Farida is amazing - although i have customised it and made it expensive! And GAS into the new Year has to be an Ibanez Musician, A Warwick of some sort, The Retrovibe Zygote and I am strangely drawn to these new PRS basses..Albatross & Dodo or whatever they're called. -

I've been happy with the wizard trad in my Limelight, virtually identical in sound to my mates 72 P.
I now have GAS for a Zygote!
Yes, off topic, but me too - would like to know more about them if any owners can chip in?

My Limelight last night, best colour combo and sounded awesome ...the player w as a bit dodgy though
-
Not any experience of the 500 but love my LMT 800...very versatile in sound, i'd go for the 800W as you still get 500W if using an 8ohm cab...350W from the 500 amp may be a struggle for larger gigs if you want headroom.

My functions band is getting £150 each (x7)..and as i said previously, a meal and free bar too...seems reasonable...although its bloody cold on Dartmoor at the moment so most importantly I do hope they have heating in the marquee.
bass is using MuTron and Octave....sounds spot on. I guess any envolope filter combined with a smooth octaver would sound pretty close
Cool, cheers for that...i've got a Zoom B3 so i'm hopeful i can get something out of that
Let us know how Uptown funk goes - its on our setlist for next gig. Still having fun trying to get a perfect sound for the bass.
We're considering this...what effect you using on the bass...if any ?

I shall be with my functions band 'Jessica & The Rabbits' playing in a marquee outside a nice rural pub out towards Dartmoor, Devon. Goodish pay, any meal of their menu for the band at the start of the night (steaks all round) and free bar for the band...quite looking forward to it.
