1. Why is there what looks like just one wire (a hot signal connection?) going to the output jack socket? Maybe it's just my eyes but it looks like there's a wire missing? Shouldn't there be a ground wire taken from the tone pot to the ground connection on the jack, like this http://buzzardsbass.com/electronics/wiring/diagrams/jazz-bass-std.jpg
2.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odX4yVa8vXk
That 'Japanese Techno Girl' video - imagine her neighbours complaining... Can you turn it down please?! These walls are bloody paper thin!
3. This website might be of interest... lots of free stuff on it http://www.synthtopia.com/
4. The 5 string Squier Active Jazz Deluxe is supposed to have quite a wide string spacing for a 5er and its active EQ includes a dedicated 'slap switch'...
5.
So the extension is to house your bass collection..?
Kind of... I'm in a semi-detached with thin walls; I plan on having sound insulation added to the downstairs party walls which is where I can hear noise from next door but I'm looking at having an extension added to the back of my house and have that as a music room - a place for my hi-fi, bass combo and small collection of instruments...
6. Yeah sounds like a P to me, and without watching the live performance I'd guess he probably played near the bridge.
7. I'd suggest adding a chorus unit, it'll do plenty to thicken up the sound of your bass.
8. I'm due to attack my pension fund next year. Once I've had an extension added to the house there'll be a great temptation to indulge myself!
9. Out of interest have you tried playing the bass through a different amp? I'm wondering whether you'd hear more of a difference with a combo/cab that has a tweeter... looking at the Rumble 100 specs it's got a full-range 12" speaker but that might not handle the highs as well as a dedicated tweeter (does the Eminence 12" get up to about 5kHz?). I've a Squier Active Jazz and playing that through my Genz Benz Contour CTR500-210T combo I hear a definite change with the treble cut/boost through the active circuit... however I find the frequency chosen by Fender for the treble to be quite high, it's at 10kHz which many consider to be in the 'brilliance' range (note that vocal 'S' sounds are at about 7kHz) and compared to the change in tone from my passive Precision, the active treble tone control is voiced higher than where treble cut occurs with my P bass. Just a thought anyway...
10. Something that's not often mentioned, but I believe is relevant here is the pickup aperture, or how much of the vibrating string that it sees; it's for this reason that single coils (with a narrow aperture) sound the way they do, clearly defined; whereas with wider aperture pickups, normally the situation with humbuckers, there's a wider mix of frequencies, giving the characteristic warmer or fuller tone. I don't know how they do it, but my Squier Jazz has no noise when either pickup is soloed, I have to assume it's a Fender noiseless 'single coil' design.
11. Welcome to the deep side... it's great isn't it?!
12.
I'm thinking of changing my name to Peter Brady.
The Invisible Man's name was Griffin...
13. That's a [s]plywood[/s] multi-laminate neck? I bet that's heavy!
14.
.012 feeler gauge under frets 7,8 &9 with the bass fretted at the first and body joint.
... and if you don't have a feeler gauge then a business card is usually 12pt thickness (0.012" thick).
15. French Connection... hmmmm, unfortunately you can't have FCUK can you? ...but you could have 'FC La Creuse'
16. According to The Guardian's short article on Echo and the Bunnymen's 11th album, 'Meteorites', the songs were conceived on a bass. Some samples here http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/may/19/echo-and-the-bunnymen-meteorites-exclusive-album-stream?CMP=ema_630 I'd never really known McCulloch to dabble much with bass so this surprised me a little.
17. Dude, plug it in!!! ... and happy NBD!
18. Just watched this http://youtu.be/Mbw9IqWe404 and I'm also a bit 'meh'; the whole thing just seems to lack a certain edge or rather it's lacking balls but for me that's probably more down to a mediocre live mix.
19. Neck relief first (I check by holding down the E at the 1st and 12th frets and check the gap from the 4th through to the 8th); then check the nut slot heights (fret at the 3rd then check for slight gap at the 1st); then adjust the saddles.
20. The new Fender Rumble range are supposed to have innards based on Genz Benz designs... they won't sound exactly alike but that's some decent heritage to have.
21. There's probably a fair few of The The's songs you could try, like this, though it isn't hugely well known material http://youtu.be/orIy18qIaCU
22. Welcome to Basschat from someone who went from owning a single bass (bought new in the late 80s) and I too hadn't bothered playing in a long time to now having a small collection of five basses that's grown to that number in just over a year... and I'm 60 in 2016...
23. Surely it has to be 'Franglais'
24.
Opinions change over time
It's for the same reason that one perhaps should not regret past mistakes because you thought it was the right decision at the time.
25. Opinions are always 100% accurate because it's a person's viewpoint based on their own experience at the time. Opinions change over time; some opinions are more informed than others; some opinions I listen to, others I don't. For example, I could read quotes from Carl Sagan all the time and benefit from his opinions and wisdom; I couldn't say the same is true with say Nick Clegg...
