2.
that sounds right - i noticed the mxr modelling on a friend of mine's x3 'spacestation'
ha ha ha!! love it!
 3.
thanks - for the recomendations - Now DAW software is a whole different kettle of fish I have Cube base LE which came with my zoom and its OK for the basics but TBH I find it too complicated to do anything fancy with. I'll probably have to spend some time in you tube looking at tutorials although in truth I'd rather just plug in and play than much about with software !
Then I definitely recommend Reaper! - I turned up at my mates house when he got a UX-8 and we faffed around for ages trying to get in to communicate with Cubase. I still, to this day do not know why no sound passed, despite having set it up and doublechecked my work. Reaper installed, run Line 6 POD software select output sends 1 & 2 as the stereo mix,Go to Reaper, right click VU meter in DAW select stereo input, Sends 1 & 2 (Or Mix L & R). Hit record. Really that easy! UX-8 worked straight away! There are, as you say, a number of tutorials on YouTube and a wiki and a friendly user manual for Reaper. I'm a big fan!
 4.
Here's my Yamaha Nathan East Signature. It's a Mk 1 brought new around about 1994 to 1995. All original apart from the preamp. I found the original Yamaha one to be the only weak point in the otherwise stunning bass. It was replaced with a Bartolini 3 band not long after recording with it for the first time. The Yamaha preamp just seemed a bit hissy, even when flat. Once the Bartolini was in it, it was like night and day. A brilliant bass even better. It's been my only constant, I've had so many basses come and gone but I've always hung onto this. Guess it's because it was my first "serious" instrument, all the previous basses I had seemed a bit amateur to this. I'm proud of the fact that every single dent and mark, scuff and ding, is mine. Particularly the couple of dozen cufflink dents on the upper horn where i got carried away pounding it on a new years eve gig! Realised as I'm typing that I really should take it out more. Seem to play 4's mostly with a pick nowadays as I'm in a rock covers band but I think there's a case for taking it out next rehearsal and getting the love back ;-)
Lovely! - I remember seeing rumours on TalkBass about a 6 string version coming out, but it never happened IIRC. I think I would have gotten one had I have not discovered my current flock.
 5.
sounds a bit multi-fx to me... don't the line 6 floor pods have mxr distortion modelling ?
Hi Ahpook, Yes, though you'd need to go for the X3 versions to be able to mix in the all important dry bass as per the M80. I use an M80 myself - I've modified mine so that it lives in my live rack all the time and I have it controlled by my MIDI effects unit. Having said that, most of the time I use it the same as the OP.. AND I have fallen in love with 'going stereo' again with a luscious chorus! OH dear!!! Speaking of SFX - I think that'd be a great idea to have a custom built unit. I've said it before and I'll say it again - One day, I'll order something very cool from Max. Every time he displays a new item my wallet winces at my glee!
 6. I'm afraid I haven't tried the compressor you mention - but I'm going to dive straight in with two suggestions, both by TC Electronic. The reason I select them (not only becasue they are my favourites) is because you specifically mention playing guitar through them as well as wanting a good Bass compressor. For a rack mountable unit go for the C300. It has two compressors on board and TC have been very clever and added a rotary 'program' switch. You tell the compressor what you are using it with, for example 'Bass Drum', 'Female Vocals', 'Acoustic Guitar' or 'Bass Guitar' - it then configures itself between spectral (multiband) and full band compression. Also features Parallel compression techniques too which will be good for acoustic guitar. You don't need to know a great deal bout programming, you just set and forget! You could probably find one for around 100 quid on ebay, which is astoundingly good. Secondly, the Pedal version but far simpler, the Nova Dynamics. It features 4 compressors and two noisegates on board - you can have two running at once. Again, the multiband and full band compression is available. I would recommend the multi-band for acoustic and bass. You can also switch in a noisegate to keep background artifacts to a minimum. Again, 100 quid. I own the Nova Dynamics as I stopped using rack gear (briefly!!!). If you can pick one up second hand, grab an EBS multicomp if you cant get a TC easily. They are also brilliant, but the Nova Dynamics rich feature set made it a winner for me.
 7. For the line6 recommendation, I've had experiences with a good few of them. For just recording one instrument at a time on to a laptop, I would highly recommend the Line 6 GX (Over the Tone Port) and for recording software, I actually LOVE Reaper DAW http://www.reaper.fm/ It is totally free to download and use - but I liked it that much I bought a license. You can even install it on a USB stick and take it anywhere. If you want to plug in a microphone at the same time, then go for the UX-1 - If you want to be able to plug in stereo keyboards, or two microphones or two guitars then go for the UX-2, Finally, if you want to record 8 seperate instruments all at the same time, the UX-8. With the new HD units on their way, I can expect the prices of these units to start tumbling, but to be honest, they're cheap to start with, but actually work! great for demos etc.
 8. I wish I had time to play one at Bass Day!
 9. Unfortunatley, there is no 'sound' to distinguish as such in the clip, but here's me abusing an Ashbory at a past Bass Bash, along with some other highlights of the day: http://www.myspace.com/doodonbass/videos I think the lil fella was great! I loved it!
 10.
I think the picture has disappeared! Probably pulled as its not meant to be shown yet...perhaps?!
No idea! - I'd hoped that someone had taken some snaps at Bass Day as I didn't have the opportunity to take a closer look at the time.
 11.
So where are these pics of the 'Blacksmith' TC amp? Any other info?? Just wondering...
I haven't found the posts on TB yet - but I'm intrigued!

 13.
Bump. Maybe this should be in "Other musically related stuff"?
Pretty bordeline, can be an 'effect' too I guess!
 14.
I'd hardly call Nigel a Bass God
I was talkin' about me! teee heee!
Dood - Your such a shmoozer! did you give Billy one of your cards too??
Ha ha ha!!! Good to meet you ma man! - Nah, but Billy kept on trying to give me his. I said, "Billy! cut it out! - I have the last 30 you mailed to me and my post office still has the jumper you knitted and..."
 15. Cheat sheets / Crib sheets for the win! I've had similar situations too and have found that a gentle reminder of the structure on a sheet is enough. All the fills and licks I am fine with but I make a note of stops and changes that could catch me out.
 16. For the amount of money they aren't, you could probably just pickup a Hartke LH1000 second hand and bridge that in to the single cab. 1000W RMS (actually Bass Gear Magazine tested them at 1100W RMS!!).
 17. I have had the pleasure of this fine specimen in my paws. It's beautiful! Plays like a dream!
 18. Charic, DaveB Ha ha! Yes indeed! - it would glow bright blue when I plug in to magical snake oil drenched cables and speakers made out of moon dust and unicorn tears!
 19.
There were pics up on Talkbass of a 900W (ish) 'Blacksmith' amp by TC. Huge amp probably for big bands like Metallica
Sounds like the one. I'll go take a look!
 20. Ere's a piccie - a bit of blatant self-promotion, but hey honoured to be stood next to a bass god and what a humble and pleasant guy.
 21.
The worst case i've ever seen this on was a hoover washing machine (total crap) when I did a stint working in retail ages ago. When I asked the hoover rep what HD stood for she said "High Door, so it's easier to get you load in and out see". That is truly shameless, still a crap washing machine.
Cool! lol lol - In that case my Shuker basses have been upgraded to HD* *"Has Dood"
 22.
Thanks for the reply, I can't remember settings I made a year ago to stuff, let alone a decade ago... Once I get my hands on a USB/MIDI cable in a few days I'll see if I can edit MIDI stuff on the V-AMP and approach it from that end.. In some ways that would be preferable because I would not need to reprogram my Motif as well.. Cheers Mark
Sure, sure I agree. - If it helps, I bought a cheap and cheerful USB>MIDI converter cable off ebay for my laptop - it was about a 5er and works a treat!
 23. Do we have any more 'photos? Would be great to see you all!
 24.
I can't believe how many people were there yesterday that I didn't meet (or recognise)! We definitely need to have an assigned time for a BassChat meet & greet - maybe at the bar, lol. I was also 'working' for most of the day with Phil on the BassGear stand so didn't get a huge amount of time to wander around. I did think there was a slightly strange feel to the GB area. Couldn't quite put my finger on it but it felt a bit cliquey and I spotted quite a few people walk over and then away again without getting close to any of Bernie's lovely basses. We were next to the Shuker stand and Jon seemed to be running it as a demo facility with a few fine musicians - Dood, I can't believe that was you and I didn't put two and two together when you were playing! I did catch some of Anna's midi stuff very early on, really interesting stuff. It didn't seem as much of a slap fest as I expected but I did notice the usual phenomena of hardly anyone playing something that they'd ever use in a band environment. Everyone seemed desperate to show off their technical chops. There was a point early one when Anna and Jon's other demo player were duetting (either with some midi drums or a drum track) and it was so refreshing to hear people playing what I would describe as 'music' I only got to see Victor Baily and thought he had some really interesting things to say about this sort of thing. Loved the 'money frets' tale, lol. Loved his 'tone' on a few things when he was just noodling around too, maybe more so than when he was demonstrating the Weather Report / Jaco stuff. Shame to see how his illness is taking its toll on him though. Some form of muscular dystrophy I think
Ahhhhh Poop!!! Yes, I have to admit that prior to going to Bass Day, I didn't read through this thread properly and hence didn't take note of who would be attending and who were going to be on the various stands. DOH! That's my fault - had I have known I would have come and found you. Sorry!
 25.
Hi Dood, Can I pick your brains please? Got the X15 hooked up to V-AMP and mostly working fine given that ART/Yamaha's version of MIDI commands is different from Behringers :-) however the worst issue is that the Bypass button on the X15 sends Midi 84 which slams the Behringer into config mode which is not quite what I would like - I would prefer it to put the V-AMP into straight through mode... The ART manual is not clear on how you might change the Midi Control change from 84 to summat else - just that setting option 6 in the bypass button setup sends 84, without mentioning what options 1-5 might send differently... 84 is a real pain because it tends to clear the previous setup in the V-AMP... Any ideas? CHEers Mark
Hi Mark - well, I know exactly what you mean and I certianly did do *something* to change the MIDI channel send myself....err.r..... it's just a case of what! I'm sorry to say the ole grey cells aren't what they used to be and I can't remember how to access and edit the board. Mine *may* have been a little different as I ended up buying the upgrade chip from ART too. I've been using a Roland FC-200 MIDI board for probably ten years or so now and the menu system on that is similarly convoluted! - Thankfully my TC effect rack has a 'learn' button - so I can config the effects unit instead. Would have been far easier to have the same function on the Behri' eh?!! Sorry I can't be much more help but I am pretty certain I had the Bypass button doing something useful!
