1.
A bit off topic by here goes. I was a huge Bon Jovi fan back in the late 80's early 90's. Seen them about 8 times. The first time we had Jon flyin gover the audience in a cape. lest item i saw them (Hyde Park) we was dressed in jeans and t-shirt, hardly moving and looked fed up. These days i find the tribute bands like By Jovi and the Bon Jovi Experience put more of an effort in to their, admittedly small, shows than the real deal. At a great cost saving as well. Just saying.
Love your posts Dave, that's actually a really good point. With reference to the cost saving - I think these days as we're all a bit more strapped for cash, rising costs of shows to see big bands could make tribute shows a bit more appealing? - I mean - I was offered a Muse ticket the other day for £45 - I love the band n' everything, but seriously! - It'd cost about the same again to arrange travel as well, so the costs start mounting up. Wembley, according to google has a capacity of 90,000 - even at 20 quid a ticket - thats hulluva lot of profit surely?
 2.
A lest with tribute bands they have made an effort. I would have thought a lot more work goes in to the good ones than just a covers band. Just look at the Australian Pink Floyd or Bootleg Beatles (amongst others) to see the effort some go to.
Definitely a point I'd like to pick up on. Some tribute bands do a great job - lots of effort and finance going in to making a great show, which makes the ticket price more worthwhile. Pat on the back for them. What I do object to - and not mentioning the band's name, is paying 8 quid to see a bunch of bored..well, I won't even call them musicians, in jeans and t-shirts not even pretending to be 'the band' - whilst the 'singer' is under some sort of dillusion that he *actually is* the person he is doing a bad job of mimicking. We've all seen those bad 'X-Factor' contestants on YouTube who go on the show dressed as Michael Jackson.. yeah - really that bad!!
 3.
So either Hartke will be bringing out some blendable drive preamps.... or his old Pearce and Ampegs will be hidden in a rack off stage!
Hmmm - a Hartke Kilo on steroids maybe? Now THAT is an amp I am already interested in - a Sheehan mod version would be a killler! I don't think it will stop Billy using Pearce as outboard as a lot of artists have racks of preamps etc despite being endorsed by one company. As far as I am aware at least, the Ampeg SVT 4's were only used to amplifier his already distorted tone - so I guess it wouldn't matter if he used the super clean LH1000's for that job anyway. I'm not 100% certain, so am happy to be put right on that one. As for the BSP preamp - I guess he'd drop it from the rig completely as the Pearce would do exactly the same anyway?
 4.
Slightly OT... but how do you actually pronounce his surname? Is it Hart-kuh? Hart-key? I ask simply out of interest...
Hart-Key
 5.
Hartke are excellent, and Larry Hartke is a man who will stand by his product! He did that "certifiable" advert campaign a couple of years ago with his telephone number attached so players could ring him and chat about amps! Very cool!
Yeah, quite a suprise when it's Larry who picks up the 'phone too and not a secretary etc!
 6. Ahhh yes! I have been watching the story unfold for quite sometime now! - I was pointed toward some posts on TalkBass about Billy leaving Ampeg and at the time it was a 'hint' that Billy was moving to Hartke. I've just read the official release on Larry's Facebook page and some chap on TalkBass has posted an email reply directly from Billy himself. As for Hartke - Anyone who has been on BassChat for any more than five mins will know I am a massive fan and a proud Hartke Artist. I have to say, Larry is a really good guy and cares for his artists, which means a lot.
 7.
Looking this up and it is a beauty, exactly the sort of thing I'm after.
http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=87360 Here's mine for a close up look.
 8.
I remember things as being A = 1.5", B = 1.625", C = 1.75" with A being the default for Jazzes and C being the default for Precisions. Getting a Jazz neck for a Precision was the hot setup in the 1980's.
Ahhh thank you! Yes, that would certainly ring true for my Jazz Bass Special - all intensive purposes a P bass with a Jazz neck - and were out in the mid to late 80's.
 9.
Might be able to help you out with one - have one similar to it knocking around at home with nowt to do. I'll measure it up tonight depth-wise and give you a shout, maybe grab a piccie or two (plus I'm just down the road in Cambridge) HTH, Ian
Also very much appreciated! Thanks!
 10.
I have 3 of those metal rack trays if any RH450 owners are interested; not looking for a massive amount for them. I did a very similar thing to rackmount the head unit from a H&K bassbase combo, if you don't trust your ability to mark and drill the holes accurately you simply get a handful of large washers and you can get them to fit!

Dood. I work for AudioSpares. Rack Shelves are my friend. Let me know what you need and I'll arrange a 10% discount code for you… Maybe more if you ask nice :-) http://www.audiospares.com/product.php?pro...at=0&page=1 - This kinda thing…?
Hi Guys - I'm certainly interested and his a reply to both of you. I'm using a short rack case and can not go over 300mm deep. I can go to a maximum of 2u safely though. So if either of you can help, that'd be brilliant! Ideally, I am looking at a 2u tray that is around 250mm deep - there's one I have spoted on ebay (in the list above). However I don't think it has any guide holes in - Yes, I'll be getting the drill and rubber washers out for sure! Thank you guys - I f*cking love BassChat, what a community!
Anyone for a flight case to fit a TC 2x12 cab? http://www.dv247.com/amplifiers/tc-electro...r-rs-212--68977
RIDICULOUS!!! Come on TC - why are you treating us like we are stupid? Honestly! Who is gonna pay that???!!!
 11.
I before you ditch the EMG hook it up to 18v by using 2 batteries. I was going to get rid of mine as I though it was a bit characterless, but it sounds huge with this simple upgrade. The batteries last ages as well so its not as if you're always going to be changing them. The easiest way to get 2 9v batteries to supply 18v (as long as they actually fit in the space available) is to buy three 9v battery clips from maplin & solder them together like this: from: http://home.comcast.net/~mgollihur/emgmod.html
Yeah, I'm a big fan of 18v leccys - but I decline to comment any further in case I get jumped on again lol lol lol.
 12.
I was thinking more in terms of the price tag of these kind of accessories
Oh!! I see! - As heavy then! Actually - I am that annoyed, it's putting me off the RH, becasue it's such a ball ache! even MarkBass F1 rack ears, just for folded metal is a rip off at 22 quid!
 13. This is what eBay has to offer - I'm just seeing which is most likely to take the RH450 either by physically screwing to or using some really nice long cable ties as straps! 14.
Think yourself lucky you don't own Mesa Dood
I used to own an SVT2 Pro and two 45Kilos cabinets - I do very much think myself lucky - nearly as much as my spine does these days!
 15. I'm looking out for a slotted rack shelf so that it won't be necessary to drill out or use sticky pads or anything. When I find one which is the right size, I will let you guys know as I think it will be a benefit and a massive cost saver!
 16.
Anyway, this thing plays fine through my praccy amp on the E and A strings but I get nothing on the D or G, unless I attach a 9v battery. Is this normal? I would have thought I'd affect all strings? As I say, I'm not really into the whole 'active' thing and farting about with batteries etc. I wondered if there was a way it could somehow be played passively (which I'm sure I was able to do on an old Westone I borrowed from a mate once) or bypassed? Or, do I just buy a new passive p/up? Any help hugely appreciated.
Hi! Bizarre that you are getting 'some signal' with a set of EMG actives! I'd expect no sound without a battery - So yes, to get them to do what they should - battery is reauired ) - The only way to get round it would be to install a passive pickup instead, as the EMG contain a preamp inside the pickup casing itself.
Pretty sure you're going to need a battery, I'm surprised you're getting any signal out of it all. My Jap Jazzes had EMGs installed when I got them, seemed to be a popular "upgrade" in the 80s and early 90s. I think the feeling now is that they sound a bit sterile and the original pickups have more of that Fender sound. If you swap to different pickups you may need to change the pots for volume and tone at the same time, I think the active pickups used different values from passive. I'll be interested in what everyone else thinks as I'm considering changing mine to stock Fender items but I don't which are best.
Yup, EMGs do have more bottom and top than most that gives them a natural 'HiFi' tone in comparison to say, a passive Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder. However, as a big fan of EMG pups - it's easy to take away the top and bottom, but it's not so easy to make a passive pup sound like an EMG. Depends on what you prefer I guess - there isn't one 'right' answer Rich is dead right, most active electronics will require different value volume and tone pots (usually in the region of 25K Ohms vs passive 250k-500k Ohm pots) if you swap to passive.
Hi Rich, Yeah that makes sense, cheers for the reply. I was wondering about pickups too, I know these come highly recommended (and they do similar ones for the Jazz); http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/spb-1-...or-precis/66504 But the genuine Fender ones aren't much more; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Original-Pick...=item45f5579f62
I can't really comment on other pups - but I remember having a set of old DiMarzio P style pickups in a late 60's P Bass once - I really liked them and I was thinking about seeing if I could get a set to mess around with in one of my P basses to see if they were *that* good!
 17.
After realising that Precision necks really are a bit too much for liking I'm on the lookout for basses that fufill this criteria. I'm aware of the Lakland's and fender deluxe. I'm am looking at passive basses and something under £400.. Cheers!
Ya know, I typed all that and totally missed the obvious! ha! - You might be able to pick up a Fender Jazz Bass Special or the active option, Power Jazz Bass Special off ebay for not a lot of money. BRILLIANT basses and I expect lots of pics of 'em on this thread. As used by Duff McKagan, the fellow from Simple Minds (err sorry - was it Derek Forbes??) and Mike Inez in Ozzy Ozbourne's 'No More Tears' video. Simple Minds: Sadly you have to wait till 4:27 onward to get a good look at.
 18. Forgive me if I am incorrect - but I believe the 'A' profile neck on a Fender is a slim one? - I have a 70's CIJ American Vintage (non-export) P-Bass and the neck on it is nearly as slim as my'89 Power Jazz Bass Special which has a '62 Jazz neck profile. I believe my P bass has such an 'A' style neck. Would I be correct in assuming that Fenders around the late 60's and early 70's were made with 'A' profiles more than say 'C's?
 19.
The jack socket. Can you imagine if every make had its own socket design to take a cable, rather like mobile chargers.
Good call!
 20. D and H Class amplifier technology - undeniable progress in the performance Vs weight debate. I can see even more improvements made in performance too - there is a lot to be said about the technology even now, compared to 'D Class version1'. I support it with open arms (and a healthier back!!)
 21.
Glad to hear someone achieving this split signal idea. I've been looking into something similar for a few months, though in my case, I want to supply a clean, unaffected signal to one channel of a power amp and to one channel of our PA, and another, effected, signal to the other channel of the power amp and a second PA channel. Do you guys reckon the power amp you use is crucial? Would you get away with a cheapie, or might that be negating any gain from splitting the signal?
I think any power amp will be fine - but I personally would (like with any gear) try to steer clear of the real cheap and nasty stuff. To make your life easier - you could look for a power amp that has 'link' XLR outs - so you could just daisey chain the power amp inputs straight out to the PA without the need for a seperate DI box. - You'd set your signal TO the power amp and elave constant then control your on stage volume with the volume on th epower amp it self - thus, the PA / engineer wil always get a constant signal should you need to adjust your onstage volume mid gig.
 22.
+ Total = £22
I reckon something like that would do nicely - I'll have to look if they do 'shallow rack' sized shelves as well. _ i'd also consider drilling four holes in and mounting the amp via rubber washers direct to the shelf. Just to be safe.
Ages ago I took my old Trace out of it's wooden sleeve and rackmounted it with a handful of bits of meccano. I think it made him calm down and lock to the click better. Infact, I watched him record several songs, start to finish just to a click, no band and they were 'pro level single takes'. What a git!

 25.
Nothing new here, but I was doing a bit of Kate Bush tonight ( ) and just wanted to post a couple of her tracks featuring John Giblin's tastefully understated fretless playing - (imho, of course ) At times, if I'm playing fretless, someone will inevitably ask, "oh, d'you know that song by Paul Young...?" All due respect to Pino but I'll tell them I'd far rather be playing either of these two. Babooshka Breathing
Wow! I'd never *really* listened to these songs before - I LOVE the slid harmonics in Babooshka - perfect. Love it! Brilliant bass line - I'm off to listen again!
