I've ran an MB F1 with a pair of Hartke 4.5XL cabs - brilliant sound! Nice and deep but with great projection. I'd also jump in and say that Hartke cabs (XL range I've used or years) are great and certainly not low end.

Or buy any DClass head that has an effects loop, then run the TH straight in to the return. Any of the BC favourites will be fine, GK MB heads, MarkBass, Genz Benz, TC Electronic. But you may find as mentioned already, just getting the TH head instead will be less of a faff!

Is it possible, like the B3 to mix in a clean blend to each affect and a global clean blend to the whole signal path?

If you can find one, the TC electronic Nova Dynamics is amazing. Also look at the EBS Multicomp secondhand too. The MXR is pretty nice as well.

It's also worth noting that if an end user workstation is infected with malware, useful information such as email addresses used for logging on to websites ( and worse paswords) can be harvested by the malicious to spread spam or of course, identity theft.

How are you guys finding Roland support? Driver updates etc. Have they been keeping the unit up to date when for example Apple does an update? Has anyone had any problems with running either of these on Mountain Lion?

[/quote] Yup, certainly eBay shops are not meant to sell guitars that have been hanging in shops as new, only 'shop soiled' or 'used' i was told by one particular chain. I'd bought a bass but wanted to know why it was marked as soiled. The shop sent me photographs of it in pristine condition and were very up front with me saying that it had been hanging in the shop, hence the substantial price drop. Distance selling laws allow you to send the item back if you are not happy - and given the condition of the instrument, I'd name and shame and send it back if they sold it to you as a NEW guitar. It's not on and the distributors would have a fit about it too. Shops should be discouraged from taking the p*ss out of customers.

Excellent! 1 vote for the Roland - that I am yet to hear a bad thing about. Though I take on board your point about the headphone out. I tend to sub-mix to an external mixer so that may not be a problem. It might be a 'nice to have' though. so the Focusrite gets a vote too!

Ok, after pretty much giving up on my current interface - or rather the company who manufacture it that are having a hard time sorting out drivers for Mountain Lion, I've been on the look our for something small and simple to replace it. Spec-wise, these both are getting great reviews, but I'm not sure which I want as of course I can't test them first. Well, not easily! So, here's my shortlist: Roland UA-55 Focusrite 2i4 Both have two analogue inputs, balanced and 48v available. Both have direct monitoring that will be very handy too. The Roland has digital ins and outs too that I could make use of in the future maybe, though less important. I thought I needed extra line-ins, but to be honest I've never used the ones on my current interface. The Focusrite I think comes with a suite of plugins n' stuff whereas the Roland has the ability to record at higher rates. Prices can be about the same but I don't know which I'm leaning toward most. Some say the Focusrite has a particular sound to it that actually works well for recording Bass. The Roland on the other hand is said to be flat sounding having less of a character. Kinda concerned that the Focusrite character might not be my bag and I'd be stuck with it. At least I can add to the Roland if I wanted to. So there's a few thoughts out loud - I welcome your responses! p.s. Mike 'Urb' Flynn has been very helpful and offered up some wallet-melting options. I would LOVE the RME Babyface that he has just gotten or even the Motu he is selling, but my budget has just shrunk substantially - those on FB will know why!

Install the DAW called Reaper. Its free to download and features a whole host of really good plug ins including EQ. The program is available for download in full and is not limited, however after 30days you'll get a 5 second nag when you open it, but still no limits to operation. It's brilliant - one of the best DAWS for features. I bought the full license within a couple of days I was so impressed and have been using it as my main tracking DAW, though I also use Logic Pro and most of the other DAWs.

I'd suggest getting a 110 for the Drop D string and standard gauge for the rest - the only set that I can think of that comes with these gauges as standard that I used to use for many years is the Billy Sheehan signature Rotosound strings. He often uses his Hipshot D-Tuner to drop to a D on the 4th string but the 110 isn't too heavy when pulling back up to E. I did much the same until I moved straight on to six string basses. It's a brilliant set with a slightly lighter G string at .043.

When it comes to the note choices, then an electric bass either fretted or fretless can easily 'do' what an upright can, but when it comes to the timbre of the instrument, well things get a little more difficult. I think there's quite a few electrics and semi-acoustics that try to emulate stand up bass and do a great job. Finally, feel i think comes from the player, not the instrument and thus, as my old IT colleagues would say, SISO* *sh!t in, sh!t out.
