1.
No.... don't go the 535 moulds route...!! it's a half way house. If you are going to pay for moulds and 535s, seriously, just go custom. The difference is way big. I tried telling Tonyf this... he ended up going to customs in the end anyway after going the Shure with moulds route. Listen to me on this one! Also, read through the thread for opinions on ACS. They are OK - but ultimately, there are far better options for bass players, for lot less money. I have the live pack with a set of T1s. They are OK, but I'd rather take a better monitor with a decent aux feed over the T1s with the live pack (this all depends on the desk of course). For example, check out a 1964 quad. http://www.custom-in...ar-monitors.php Seriously, spend half an hour or so reading through this whole thread. I reckon it gives you the best information that you can find on the net. You are looking 260 + 130ish (factoring in impressions cost) for a set of Shure 535s with sleeves. 110 quid short of a full on custom (you can normally wangle free imps) with the treble, mid and dual lows that you really need. I know it's 110 quid but the difference between custom and universals is night and day and easily worth 110 for the comfort and perfect fit which gives you the uber clarity and thumping bass that you don't get with an ill-fitting universal. They will never fall out when you are performing... and above all, they are as cool as.... ...and you can't put a price on that.
Your comments are very much appreciated and I will certainly give this thread a good read in detail. Speaking frankly, it's my hearing that needs looking after too and if I am already happy to pay for pro moulds just for protecting my lug-oles then I shouldn't skimp on getting good quality sound in to them either.
 2.
Nothing beats customs but if you don't have problems with universals and don't want to throw yourself into the world of custom IEMs, the Shure range is actually pretty good. You have to pay serious money (circa 1k+) on IEMs to get as good as a great set of on ears (width of soundstage is always cited as a problem) - but not many people want to sport the Paul Gilbert look on stage!
I think ultimately I will always wonder if I should have upgraded to customs in the first place and thus the likes of ACS will be on the list. - I've asked on my FB page for experiences too, I guess I wanted to know if 535's with some moulds would do the job.

 4.
If you are using them for stage use, they are pretty much as good as anything else you can get in the price range - there's the IE8s from Sennheiser too... which are meant to have have a very deep bass but I am yet to find anybody who can fit them in their ears without them falling out.
Thanks EBS'! For stage use yes, but if they make good for 'quiet practice' then also good! I'll take a look at the IE8's too. Either that or it's time to hit the credit card ha!
 5.
I'm really looking forward to checking it out too. The IP series inspired me to roll my own amp with the same OEM power amp/DSP chip set that Jim used. For his sake, hope he used something a lot more user-friendly on the programming end this time!
I'm looking forward to trying out this amp too. I like the idea of fine tuning amp and cabinet combinations with a tweakable EQ and filters. It makes lots of sense to me.
 6. What's the feeling from IEM users about Shure 535 in comparison to some of the other models mentioned in this thread? Any experiences to share?
 7. Where are you based?
 8. I'm possibly on the look out for a Fender PB70/Ash with a Maple fretboard.http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/pb70ash.html - Will get a few trade ideas together. Maybe a 62/VSP instead if funds will stretch.
 9.
That would be a ABI 5/3 in Ferrari Yellow. My dream dingwall, if you make it an all wenge neck
Indeed it is! It is also very unusual now as I've completely rewired it! (There's a thread about it) - As far as I know, at the moment it is the only Dingwall bass that features *only* serial pickup configurations. My mate Ben who lives just down the road from me has an AB1 5/3 with the Wenge neck and I have to say, it looks amazing! If I remember I'll endeavour to get a picture on this thread!
 10. I wonder how this would get on for bass guitar? http://www.carvinworld.com/products/TS100
 11. That's in the right ball park for sure JapanAxe - and to be honest the preamp only need be a simple Marshall tone stack (cathode follower?) rather than lots of gubbins on board.
 12.
Pre-amp valves are fine on their sides but the power valves seem to need to be vertically oriented otherwise the electrons get confused. IIRC the AC30 had them upside down
Yeah! Brian May used to have dead straight hair until he started playing AC30's!!
 13. I owned a Warwick preamp once that was made up of a valve preamp followed by a small valve power amplifier whose output went to DI as well as the connections to feed a normal power amp. The idea being that you'd get the tone and feel of a real valve amplifier in a rack but choose your solid state power section to drive your speakers. Great idea but in reality it wasn't as articulate as I'd hoped.
 14.
"...and the height of the power bottles pretty much dictate things" Do they have to stand upright?
No. I was also wondering about the use of different shaped transformers too, such as toroidal types.
 15.
I'd suggest reading pt-1 of the blog, but basically jamup and an interface I like the line 6 sonic port
That's pretty much the way it goes yup! Can't believe it has become so easy to be truly mobile in our bass rigs! It'll just keep getting better too for sure.
 16. I have to admit, I purposely left out some of my own thoughts - but I did wonder what results could be achieved by losing at least one transformer (mains) to power the valve amplifier using an SMPS instead. The other transformer would obviously still be a sticking point given it's role in valve amplification.
 17. The second I saw the picture I thought something wasn't right about it - but the owner says lower down. It's not an official Sheehan model. The attitude was offered in non-signature models (including a 5 string) and this standard version has been 'upgraded' it seems. Actually, still a very nice bass without the Sheehan mods.
 18. Ok, so this is a crazy question to begin with, so let me flesh it out a bit. I have in my possession a vintage Marshall Super Bass 100W valve amplifier. It has been recently serviced and had a few part upgrades to improve it's response and tone. I have to say, it sounds amazing! It is however a big beast of an amplifier as you all will know. So it got me to thinking. I *know* that the output and power transformers are big and bulky. I know that the valves need room for a bit of fresh air. But has anyone actually tackled making a 100W all valve bass amplifier smaller and lighter? Rack mountable in a 2u box at least! I'm not talking about hybrids here. Everyone is doing that these days!
 19. Seriously, if it's that sound you have in mind and your budget is tight - trawl the marketplace here for Hydrives - less hassle in the long run and the results will be much better
