This is a very interesting thread and as a video reviewer myself, I am open to suggestions as to how to make reviews more interesting (though I am bound by certain limitations which stops us from maybe doing the kind of reviews I would like.) I have two rules I keep in mind when I review. I do not "shred" nor do I show off to the viewer. Most of the time, the bass lines or even sometimes 'noodles' are simple but I try to cover the tonal range of the instrument. Ok, I'm not perfect but a viewer is there to hear the instrument not me. I'll often demonstrate different settings with different playing techniques and if a particular tone lends itself to a style then I will show that too. As for the equipment we use in the studio, it is often a nice accessible rig. For example, recently I've been monitoring using an Aguilar TH500 and SL112. When watching the review videos, you'll often hear me tell you to use decent headphones or big speakers. Most 'buds' and laptop speakers are pretty rubbish at real bass. With regard to the actual process of recording the reviews then uploading to the magazine, well there are limitations there. The videos and sound are all recorded in full HD, studio quality etc - but by the nature of the medium, everything is compressed in order to fit 30 or however many videos in to every magazine, every month. This has caused problems when reviewing certain items and I have flagged that as well as pointing it out in the review. My closing lines usually remind you that the best way to hear and decide if the instrument is for you is to get it on your own lap for a try out. The videos can help you make a decision, but your hands will tell you if a bass is right for you or not. And here's just a few of the reviews I have done : http://basschat.co.uk/topic/248043-doods-100-online-video-reviews/
Ahhhh.... When I search spottily for "50 best bass lines evaaar" it comes back with nothing in the search result... Do you have to have a full premium membership to access this playlist or can the gippo' like me who only have a free account with adverts get it?
You should be able to access the playlist either way - follow the link in my OP -
Desirable perhaps, but not a necessary skill. It all depends on what kind of gigs you might get a call for. Suffice to say in 40 years of pro and semi-pro work, I've never been asked to read dots.
Similarly, the musicians who I thought would hand me notation actually expected me to learn by ear. If I were lucky I got a rough crib chart, but either way, it was still one day of rehearsal then straight out to gig with 6 different artists. Frankly I took that as a compliment to my skill and attitude!
I got the purple and the clef right atleast Went green with the other so it's easy to tell which is which and so it matches your shuker when it's flipped
If only they could embed flip-paint - then that would have been a perfect match for my two Shukers! Flip-tastic!

Aguilar DCB pick ups, who's tried 'em? Opinions? Comparisons?
Dood replied to RustInPeace90's topic in Accessories and Misc
They are indeed passive pickups and depending on what pots you have in the bass, yes you may need to swap them out too. EMG do pots for both their passive and active pickups - it'd depend on what you have on board already. i.e. the EMG HZ pickups are passive and therefore the value of the pots is much higher - probably 250k or 500k whereas the active pickups from EMG such as the DC will be using 25k pots. -
Can you pull your basschat card and borrow one for a review for us all?
You don't know how much I'd like to get a pair of these to test.. oh and to take on tour later on in the year! There's also the option of getting them in to my bass department of Guitar Interactive Magazine. A video review in a pro studio would allows us to get an idea of what they are capable of. Oh and the magazine has a huge worldwide readership too, which is always a bonus. I've linked all 100+ reviews in the BassChat reviews section too. Plug? Of course it is!

Similar thinking here - actually something I've been *trying* to do for many many years! Who can remember the ISP rig I had eh?! I'd like to hear these and then have a pair of FR's stacked - maybe a third just..well.. because.
-
At the moment I expect to hardwire and run a stereo pair along side a guitar cable or similar then have a personal mixer sat in my rack. I don't run a wireless guitar pack, so whilst I'm tethered, I'll at least see how I get on with a wired system. That of course may change when I get fed up with too many cables ha! The LD looks good actually, but the likes of Shure look really promising too.
Glad to hear it all went well. Now comes the wait eh?!
Thank you! Yeah, recommendation greatly appreciated mate! Oh the wait... I'm not very good with waiting.... still, it's faster than a custom bass build!

I can't believe I didn't think of that!!!!!!! Absolutely brilliant!! I've ordered translucent deep purple shells with black cables. You did actually get the clef right though. I've put a gold clef on each ear and, well, so I don't lose 'em, I've got my name on 'em too!! You'll have to imagine the gold writing!
Ha Tony - you have a friend! A quad in the lows is a massive sound. It's what I love about the JH16s and V8s and my Roxannes. You probably realised when you tested them, they are all great... but one of them will speak to you with it's sound signature... for you it was the V8 So what colour scheme did you go for?
Yes! I mean, the Qi model was very good and originally that is what I had agreed with myself to spend on.. but you know how it is..lol. I'd have kicked myself if I had tried the V8's but went with the Qi's. Don't get me wrong, the Qi is very good - but the articulation in the lows that I heard in the V8's was noticeable. A bit like the difference between drop tuning a 37" scale bass vs a 33": Note definition, timbre and punch. I left the JH16's and similar in the cupboard. That would have made my bank card wince I think. I'm better off not hearing them for now! I know there will always be better - but the V8's offered what I needed and that's great. Colours? Well I'm playing with the 1964 designer so that I can upload a picture!
yup, I agree, you cannot make an expensive decision like that without being able to do a side by side comparison....
And I am VERY fussy!! heh heh!
Top choice goodly gentle man. PS. A year later and I still have the smile from ear to ear every time I put them in!
Thanks Tony! Yeah, these are gonna get lots of use!!
He shoots, he scores!
I appreciate the help from you guys Tonyf and EBS_Freak. This whole thread has been very useful and I thank you EBS for taking the time to share your experiences in such detail.

I think the East preamps are wonderful - however I do have a Glock' pre in my AB1 and have to say it's brilliant - the 3 band version offers a great deal of scope. If you happened to have a three pickup Dingwall, I'd suggest my 'DV Switch' mod too which got a big thumbs up from Sheldon himself at LBGS. Very pleased about that!
At the time I had a Hartke LH500. No input gain control!
Though technically, the volume control on the LH500 IS actually the gain control - it's the master volume that's missing from the LH heads
Does anyone own any "Cosmic Ears"? A guy was wandering the LBGS demonstrating some 6 driver in ears, which I thought were rather good, and considerably cheaper than most at £425, plus £50 for the impressions... www.cosmicears.com
Hey! I'd had them recommended to me too and they seem to get good reviews but I went with the brands I could physically try out and thus these weren't on the demo list.

Some details here:
The 1964 Ears 1964-V8 Custom In Ear Monitors are designed for the most discerning listener and are tuned with bass lovers in mind. The V8 is handcrafted with eight balanced armature drivers in each monitor, coupled with a three-way crossover that yields unrivalled sonic purity. Featuring a Triple Bore design, they allow for the IEM's high, mid and low frequency sound components to be sent through separate passages in the sound port, this approach results in a more convincing and transparent transition between frequency ranges. Center Drive Technology: Unlike conventional balanced armature drivers, theirs are designed with the drive-rod in the centre of the diaphragm. The result is a remarkably dynamic, deep, and rich bass response. 3-Way Crossover: Their true, 3-way crossover directs frequencies optimized for each driver. This dramatically increases headroom and reduces distortion. Triple Bore Design: By dedicating a separate bore to each frequency range, the V8 is able to deliver sound from each driver without frequency or phase distortion. 3D Soundstage: Each proprietary driver used in the V8 was engineered to work together in harmony to produce a realistic and spacious soundstage.

How you get on?
What a superb visit! - Yeah, Paul was great. Patient and knew that I wanted to demo the products with zero bias. He asked the right questions to help me form my choices and didn't steer me at all. I didn't take any preconceived ideas with me nor did I look too hard at the individual specifications either. Just trusted my ears and music source! Given my budget and my needs, I am pretty sure I've made the right choice. I'd totally recommend the Custom IEM Company to anyone - especially as they have such a wide stock of all the major IEM brands. I demo'd Ultimate Ears, JH Audio and 1964 specifically. Again, given my budget and needs, it did mean that I struggled a bit as they are all very good. However, there was one IEM in the price bracket that delivered the goods I needed. The JH and UE had a superb clarity and detail that I crave, but just one set I tried also had a weight and clarity in the lows that actually made me smile from ear to ear. I went to give the Qi a whirl but came away having ordered the 1964 V8.

I've been chatting to Alex about the FR's already. Very interesting indeed. I have to hear these cabs for sure!
