1. The Nova Drive is a cool pedal as essentially it is two distortions in one. I'd describe the two as a Tubescreamer overdrive and a RAT distortion. The overdrive has a clean blend (excellent!) - What is interesting is that you can configure and save all of the settings as well as the routing as a patch! You can run A into B in series, Bin to A in series or both in parallel!! The reason I have made a point of saying this is that by running both effects in parallel with a clean mix too gives you everything from a mild 'grit' to a filthy distortion when both are maxed out together. Using the dry blend allows the low end back in and also some top end clarity too. Both pedals have an EQ section - the distortion in particular allows you to boost bass AND treble (rather than one tone knob) so you'll get that top end bite back - but you also have the option of quite a lot of bass boost if that's what you need. For that cleaner crisp bite I would roll the lows off the pedal then dial in some top to taste. It's an ALL ANALOGUE signal path too and fairly touch sensitive. You can make it bark by digging in. I like that it can be controlled externally via MIDI - but you don't have to use that function at all. You can just press the two buttons on and off! Hope that helps - do ask any more questions!
2. I recently reviewed the Seymour Duncan Studio bass. I wanna buy one! I've been a massive fan of the TC Electronic Nova Dynamics pedal that I'd recommend in a heart beat, but they are getting harder to come by. The SD has turned out to be a bit of a dark horse. It's pricey, but certainly in the time I had to review it I was very impressed.
3.
Looks like i'm going to go for it, i like loud as the older you get the less your hearing works so it has to be BIG... And if i do gig, it will be good enough. Cheers Dood.
Hey no problem - if you want to see my review, here's the WT with the 6x10. If you need to 'subscribe' it IS free to read the magazine and you won't get loads of spam: http://licklibrary.ceros.com/iguitarmag/ron-bumblefoot-thal-guitar-interactive-magazine/issue17/page/121
4. If you're using it mostly in the house, the the 4x10 will be a beast! - If you want to go smaller, the D series 12" cab is a good purchase too - it does the 'Eden' thing well.
5. I really like the WT550 - yet another piece if gear I shouldn't have sold. I have reviewed the 610xst which sounds superb but the weight will let down those looking to go lightweight.
6. Old thread bumped - anyone have thoughts about the differences between the Berg HD212 and Barefaced Big Twin 2?
7. Nova Drive Still Available. WILL SWAP FOR BILLY SHEEHAN SIGNATURE DRIVE
8. It does look impressive though, yes.
9. I'm near Norwich, so a bit of a way to go!
10. A cabinet a lot of people would like to hear that's for sure! (Me included!)
11. Flawless transaction and great to deal with. Thanks Graeme!
12. This is a very interesting thread and as a video reviewer myself, I am open to suggestions as to how to make reviews more interesting (though I am bound by certain limitations which stops us from maybe doing the kind of reviews I would like.) I have two rules I keep in mind when I review. I do not "shred" nor do I show off to the viewer. Most of the time, the bass lines or even sometimes 'noodles' are simple but I try to cover the tonal range of the instrument. Ok, I'm not perfect but a viewer is there to hear the instrument not me. I'll often demonstrate different settings with different playing techniques and if a particular tone lends itself to a style then I will show that too. As for the equipment we use in the studio, it is often a nice accessible rig. For example, recently I've been monitoring using an Aguilar TH500 and SL112. When watching the review videos, you'll often hear me tell you to use decent headphones or big speakers. Most 'buds' and laptop speakers are pretty rubbish at real bass. With regard to the actual process of recording the reviews then uploading to the magazine, well there are limitations there. The videos and sound are all recorded in full HD, studio quality etc - but by the nature of the medium, everything is compressed in order to fit 30 or however many videos in to every magazine, every month. This has caused problems when reviewing certain items and I have flagged that as well as pointing it out in the review. My closing lines usually remind you that the best way to hear and decide if the instrument is for you is to get it on your own lap for a try out. The videos can help you make a decision, but your hands will tell you if a bass is right for you or not. And here's just a few of the reviews I have done : http://basschat.co.uk/topic/248043-doods-100-online-video-reviews/

16.
Ahhhh.... When I search spottily for "50 best bass lines evaaar" it comes back with nothing in the search result... Do you have to have a full premium membership to access this playlist or can the gippo' like me who only have a free account with adverts get it?
You should be able to access the playlist either way - follow the link in my OP
17.
Desirable perhaps, but not a necessary skill. It all depends on what kind of gigs you might get a call for. Suffice to say in 40 years of pro and semi-pro work, I've never been asked to read dots.
Similarly, the musicians who I thought would hand me notation actually expected me to learn by ear. If I were lucky I got a rough crib chart, but either way, it was still one day of rehearsal then straight out to gig with 6 different artists. Frankly I took that as a compliment to my skill and attitude!
18. I know a chap who has penned a few number ones for major artists and doesn't mind admitting he cant read music at all.
19.
I got the purple and the clef right atleast Went green with the other so it's easy to tell which is which and so it matches your shuker when it's flipped
If only they could embed flip-paint - then that would have been a perfect match for my two Shukers! Flip-tastic!
20. They are indeed passive pickups and depending on what pots you have in the bass, yes you may need to swap them out too. EMG do pots for both their passive and active pickups - it'd depend on what you have on board already. i.e. the EMG HZ pickups are passive and therefore the value of the pots is much higher - probably 250k or 500k whereas the active pickups from EMG such as the DC will be using 25k pots.
21.
Can you pull your basschat card and borrow one for a review for us all?
You don't know how much I'd like to get a pair of these to test.. oh and to take on tour later on in the year! There's also the option of getting them in to my bass department of Guitar Interactive Magazine. A video review in a pro studio would allows us to get an idea of what they are capable of. Oh and the magazine has a huge worldwide readership too, which is always a bonus. I've linked all 100+ reviews in the BassChat reviews section too. Plug? Of course it is!
22. Similar thinking here - actually something I've been *trying* to do for many many years! Who can remember the ISP rig I had eh?! I'd like to hear these and then have a pair of FR's stacked - maybe a third just..well.. because.
