Nawww shucks!!! Thank you very much for the kind words. I do try and in honesty there's so much I would like to offer in my reviews but there are certain limitations as you can imagine. (Time/Costs/Space etc) I hope that therefore what I do get over is helpful and worthy! One thing I try not to do is shred or unseat the viewer by fulfilling an ego trip or anything like that. I mean, I could treat you to a ten minute prog bass solo in 13/8 but that is definitely not what demos and reviews should be in my view. I love bass gear and I love doing reviews - I could play with this kit all day every day!
And besides you would never play it as you probably have tons of sexy gear anyway lol
Well, I do love my toys and I think they're sexy! Not to everyones taste though I am sure! - but surprisingly I was looking for another 4 string to teach with! It just so happens that this one turned up coincidentally at the same time!
In that case I think you did the sensible thing and stopped bidding so in reality it could just be a Pretender thats worth about 200 bangers tops?
I'm far too sensible for my own good at times, but yes, I took the right choice and backed out.
But it hasn't sold if his mate has bid the value up twice. From my PoV it's worth the £700 ( though maybe knocking off £50 after his failed second attempt) purely because it's sentimental. But I get what you mean about feeling what it's worth, entirely different thing that is!!
Yes sorry, I was busy coming to terms with it.. heh! - It really isn't worth 700, even sentimental money. Really nice CIJ 62 reissues on here have failed to reach £450 and they are in great condition. This 'at a push' is an RI neck on an unknown body.
-
but ya know, too late now - someone has grabbed themselves an interesting instrument for what they felt it was worth - and that's what eBay is all about. Hopefully it'll still be as nice as it was 25 years ago
....gulp.... Might be time to hit him with the harsh realities of the worth. Send him links to Lozz's 78's at £1100 and perhaps some vintage RI's, throw in some bitsers, add that it's collection only and he should have a better informed evaluation!
Well, when I first spotted it - and boy was I surprised to see it again, I did contact him. He asked lots of questions about the bass and I referred to my own notes and pictures from when I was a teen. (Yes I was a stickler for details even then!) I told him what the bass was worth and then offered more in an effort to secure it, but he wanted at least 700 when he realised 1500 was out of the question.
-
Coincidence, or sellers mate pushing it up?
Hmmmm, well, he did say that he wanted way more for the bass - i mean he'd said that it was valued by a bassist as £1500!! - no way Jose!
-
I bid last second and was outbid higher than what I feel the value of the bass was. Interestingly the last bidder pulled out as he couldn't pay for it. (I'd chatted with the seller about it). I'm a bit cheesed off as I'd have liked it back for sentimental reasons but not because it was a 'fender'.
-
Hi guys - just been alerted to this thread. it didn't sell the first time and has been readvertised. It'd be wrong for me to say anything about the auction though as I don't own the bass - but yes it used to be mine and I sold it when I was a teen some 25 odd years ago. It does seem to lack the things you'd expect from a real fender, but I didnt know that when I was rather young!

Lost dogs - basses you wish you could buy back... Have you got it now?

D'Addario exl 220 nickel wound (string length)
Dood replied to ebenezer's topic in Accessories and Misc
How odd! - I'd suggest checking with D'Addario UK and maybe seeing if the 'extra long' set of the same gauge will suit. Their customer services are A1 and I am sure they will help you out. -
Nice to see you on here SmoothHoundChris! With a transmitter that small, hope you are gunning for the sax/trumpet/horn market? The dinkiest transmitter would be a right coo in that market!
I really like that the transmitter is small too. I mean, if you are slipping a small D Class head in to the front of a bass gig bag and carrying your cabinet in one hand, the last thing you want is a big wireless box to fit in the case too. I think this is a great little product and I suspect after taking it out for a proper spin it'll win me over. I'll get the low F# on it later -
I assume your bass has passive pickups then? The wireless is effectively providing a pre-amp so your pickups aren't loaded by the cable. I prefer the sound of my guitars through the wireless but for some people it's a touch too bright so they can round it off with the cable tone simulator.
Yes! Spot on, I was running my bass in passive mode! - I'll try it with my actives later -

Little bit of testing earlier on and I have to say that this is quite a cool wireless. I configured it to the 5ms setting and I feel you'd be hard pushed to tell much difference between that and a 20ft cable. (I say that as I am A/B'ing with said cable). I'm yet to try it out in a band setting but right now, for the money, I think this is a cracking box of tricks. Simple, no hassle set up. edit: with ref to the cable - there is also a cable length 'simulator' on the device too which is very good. With this switched off (I preferred that setting) there is a nice added clarity in comparison to a long lead. Just a smidge, but it is noticeable. -
Remember when you are hearing a low B, you are hearing the harmonic content also, not just the fundamental "B". Anything above 10ms in a close monitoring situation is a nightmare... Your striking of the string will be noticeably out with the rest of the music. For maximum laughs, you should try singing against a >10ms delay when you have got a feed direct into your ears.
If I am recording on a laggy system (thankfully it hasn't happened recently) it is possible to notice when the latency is higher than optimum settings. I can't really explain it and it's something you have to sort of test out, but even before your ear notices the sound delay, playing the bass just feels different. Less responsive. The only way I can describe it is to liken it to going from my bass set up to a budget instrument that has uneven frets, bad neck relief or unbalanced action. Just feels like you're fighting it as the sound comes back through to you via isolating cans. -
Spec page says 8ms latency. That's quite a lot compared to other products. Line 6 G30 is about 4ms and the new G70 and G75 is only 1.5ms.
I'd be keen to test both verses a standard 20ft cable. I wonder if Line 6 are being a bit keen and SmoothHound conservative? Or maybe it's the other way round! I do find the 1.5ms thing a bit hard to believe though knowing the sort of latency you get through the A/D- D/A conversion of even a simple effect pedal. Very cool if it is true though. I can do a pretty 'dirty' test of latency I think but I don't have any line 6 units to run as a comparison. -

I'm hoping to get it hooked up later on this evening! - I too like the way that it can be mounted on a strap too Muppet. I have to say that the hinge for the 1/4" jack plug on this one looks pretty strong as it is all metal. -

I've not had a chance to plug it in yet as the weekend has been full of festivities but the specs are on the product listing suggesting a very capable battery life and low latency. Watch this space! -
I'll be reviewing a 5 string LionHeart next week.

Initial thoughts are that it is well made, and presented well. It would certainly go well with any kit in which you are using to travel light and there's quite a lot of functionality but in for configuring it - though the system comes ' set up' and ready to go straight out of the box. Can't wait to plug it in actually! -
I have one of these lil chaps sat on my desk right now. I'll report back in a day or so once I've given it a whirl, but so far the specifications look good - and it is tiny! The company are based in Cambridge too which is great to see. http://www.smoothhound-innovations.com

Similarly, I took the advice of Russ and Tony here, bypassed the generics and went for a full moulded set too. Never looking back. I too have the 1964 V8.
