Exactly my suggestion as not only can you boost certain frequency areas, the cool trick is using the multi band compression to have say the mid range start to compress when you push it hard, which almost feels a bit like a valve amp So, not specifically using it as a compressor in the traditional sense. So flexible, damn this pedal is good.
Interestingly and slightly related, I learned a trick from session guitarist Keith More many years ago - wow, I must have been about 15 or something. I asked him how he managed to play ridiculous legato passages with very little distortion. He used to run his amps just on break up, rather than full bore distortion, but ran a rack compressor in the effects loop *after* the drive section. The usual compressing effect you'd get from using lots of gain was then taken up by a compressor itself and thus, the signal could be cleaned up for clarity but also to aid in his already nimble playing. It was soon after that I started toying with a dual signal path method myself (yup, even as a teen) which accidentally lead me to using what I now know as 'New York' style parallel compression. So, there ya go! /offtopic
Personally I don't like sub-woofers. IMO they sound artificial.
The problem with Subs is the same in HiFi world as it is in Pro Audio world. Plug any old amp in to any old speaker and it makes a sound, getting it sounding great requires proper set up. I suppose you could say the same of people's amplifier and cabinet choices.. It's mostly guess work and very little accurate testing lol. Get it right and the subs don't sound like an extra sound source but part of 'the whole'. -
Absolutely love them. The difference that stands out the most, following their conversion to custom moulds, is the noise isolation. It makes such a huge difference to their effectiveness and now I have perfect balance in my ears and can hear all of my bandmates and my bass with absolute clarity. The service from the custom iem company was excellent and I'm now a full iem convert. So much so that I just picked up a helix and my aguilar db750 is going up for sale.
Such great news! - I've been setting up my Helix LT today and am looking forward to it getting it's first outing at a gig soon. Like you, I will be using my current IEMs and just the Helix with no backline. All other pedals are staying at home it seems!

p.s. I'll see if I can arrange a review in GI.

I actually don't know the track, but it's the unmistakeable sound of a Dingwall bass and probably an NG2 too. The drive sounds pretty nice. Doug does make some exceedingly good pedals.
lol what if you get a Ground loop? sorry folks, show's cancelled lol
Ha ha!! It's not just this pedal that requires switch to be in said position, I've seen it on others too. It's necessary for Phantom Power to work
Exactly this for me. I want a bass with a superb tone stock, then a second that feels and plays the same; Right down to pickup and preamp' choice. Any tonal adjustments I need, I use my pedal board to 'get the tone' appropriate for the track in mind.
It does also mean I have terrible OCD for instruments in pairs.. Two Fender PJ's, Two Fender Precisions, Two Dingwall, Two Shuker basses, Two electric guitars....
I'd imagine that if it's a 'just in case my main bass fails' backup then something as close to the sound/output of your main bass as possible. That way you can switch with minimal faffing around with settings, especially as you're in a function band where keeping the show going and folk on the dancefloor is a priority. Recommendations for hearing bass on home hi-fi systems
Dood replied to Orbs's topic in General Discussion
I think a mismatched sub can actually make things worse and my recommendation would be to get a nice set of studio monitors ('Active', the sort with an amplifier inside) and preferably ones with at least 6" cones for the woofers, or better still 8" - not to be loud, but to move some air and grace you with a bit of audio depth rather than reaching for the bass control on the amp. I was lucky to pick up a pair of decent monitors from a studio doing an upgrade many years ago and they are still going strong for what I listen to all day and play through (of course when I am doing remote session work too). You needn't blow silly money - there's some good offerings out there at a reasonably budget, such as the Rokit models by KRK. The other options is to buy a really nice set of studio earphones (No, not Beats..) My tracking cans in my studio space are a set of Beyerdynamic DT770's which I managed to buy new for a total steal! They're a classic and well performing can which are enclosed so you won't get complaints about noise bleed. -
Cheers pete. The spec says it needs 40mA max to power it, the recommended power supply is rated 500mA. I'm trying to find specs for the Hartke Bass Attack as it works prefectly with both mixers via phantom power. I'm more confused than normal
The manual suggests that the DI switch must be in the GND position for Phantom Power to work. I'm sure you'll have tried it, but in case you haven't..
So... How would I configure my X18 to run stereo to a P2, or do I need a fancy lead?
I've also just spotted the the X18 also uses Ultranet. When I am playing with my own band, I actually use the Behringer P16m for my stereo ear mix. In this case I wouldn't use my Fischer or any other cables - everything is connected via one single Ethernet cable. I love using the iPad app for my mixes, but I find for me personally the P16m gives me access to everything I need in the whole mix, so much so that I can adjust it mid-song, where as my little iPad screen is a bit fiddly when using the Behringer app.
Get OBBM to build you a Y cable into which you can insert a standard XLR lead. The XLR lead going to you pack is the one that is going to take the abuse, so you may as well make that bit standard and leave the OBBM magic at the mixer side.
Which is the really obvious bit to mention! The cable that OBBM made for me is just that, a short run and of course yup, use a standard XLR lead to take you from backline up to you wherever you are on stage. Good point, I totally missed adding that to my reply.

D'Addario rounds, either Nickel or Steel. Sometimes I like to change things around a bit. The NYXL's are ace and despite being discontinued I have FlexSteels in my drawer which I also really like. Oh and the Balanced Tension Nickels. The only exception being for my unusual instruments that need strings that are outside of D'Addario's catalogue, in which case Newtone Strings here in the UK are amazing for custom work and are my go-to when it's time to order more. The customer service is superb too.
