1. Video worked fine for me. Great work and a lovely p bass. Very tempting.
2. Someone emailed me this... Got a few minutes to waste/broaden your musical experience? Go to this website... http://everynoise.com/engenremap.html Someone has put together a web page showing hundreds of musical genres... Many of which you will have never have heard of, and have bonkers names... Click on a musical genre and it will play you a sample Click on the arrow on the right of the sample and it takes you to a map of artists in that genre Click on one of those and it will play you some of their music Click again and it will take you to that artist on Spotify Enjoy... Share if you find something interesting David.
3. They are over 600 quid new - so yes, if all is well. Quite tempted myself...
4. I expect there is already a thread for this, but I couldn't find it. I've just seen some pics of the venue for our next gig, and wow ... The fabulous Longton Central Hall in sun-drenched Stoke on Trent. One bonus of playing with a gospel choir means you get to play in some beautiful old churches and halls. Anyone got some pics to share of interesting places they have played? Lovely old Victorian boozers? Posh hotels? Fancy theatres? Or what's the most dismal room you have played? Show us your pics...
5. Wow! The Cheltenham Jazz festival has a particularly good line up this year. This could get expensive!
6. Hi Niki, Greetings from another Glos bass player. Enjoy basschat, it is a really good forum.
7. Recommend you check out the Geoff Chalmers/Lauren Pierce bowing technique course at DiscoverDoubleBass. Lots of useful videos and materials.
8. Saw this on gumtree... 'previous owner etched numbers on the fretboard' www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instrument/bass-guitar-.-fender-p-bass-style.-unbranded-and-old/1150545121 ???
9. I wish my EUB playing was as 'terrible' as yours was. Have a bump for a Stagg at a very good price...
10. K&K bass max pick up is less than 90 quid on Thomann, and Shadow sh965 pick is 100 quid. I've got the Shadow on my cheap EUB and it does the job. I'm guessing that it wouldn't cost a fortune to get a luthier to make your bass properly left-handed. Probably worth getting the fingerboard shimmed at the same time. Something to save up for.
11. Half the fun of having a cheap EUB is bodging it about to make it easier/better to play. If it works for you then go with it. Think I'd go one step further and paint f holes on it...
12. Someone called my EUB 'Veronica' and the name stuck. I now get asked if I am bringing Veronica to practices. Haven't named my bass guitars.
13. Davo's top ten tips are spot on. Good worship bass players are good bass players i.e. good listeners, sensitive to the mood and dynamics, locked in with the drummer, adding power and energy when required. There is more variety in Christian worship music the uninitiated might think. It's come a long way since Thora Hird and Cliff Richard. Bands like Rend Collective have written some great worship songs with a folky, rootsy feel, and bands like Gungor are simply excellent musicians and songwriters, and so talented they defy any label. Worth checking out if you have never heard them. Sorry you had a bad experience, Marc S. Some folk are threatened by anything that isn't done they way it was when they were children. But in my experience many more want to see some life, spark and energy in their churches. We did a gospel choir gig in an ancient cotswold church to a largely grey haired audience. At the end, an elderly lady said to me, 'Good stuff. That's the most life this church has seen since about 1740.'
14. Don't know if this helps, but there is a Q & A on the gollihurmusic.com website that says... My fingerboard isn't flat, it's curved - do I need to fix that? No. If you lay a yardstick lengthwise against the board you should see daylight in the middle. "Relief" is the term used for the concave curve that is purposely cut into the fingerboard, to allow strings to vibrate without hitting the fingerboard. Unlike most bass guitars and similar instruments that have adjustable truss rods, the relief is planed into an upright bass fingerboard. This is necessary to avoid getting buzzing from undesired string/fingerboard interaction in some positions, and it must be done carefully if you want very low action from your instrument
15. Thought I'd start this thread off again as I'm thinking about getting either a bassbone or the lehle basswitch iq di (I need to swap between an EUB with a piezo and an active bass). There's a video review where Ed Friedland couldn't speak highly enough of the basswitch. Any more experiences to share?
16.
Which one is "The Stagg thread" - there are quite a few.
I meant the one titled 'Stagg!!!' - there's about 18 pages so happy reading... David.
17. EUB strings - there are loads of choices. I replaced a string on my EUB with an 'Innovation Honey' - and was pleased with the result as it sounded reasonably like an acoustic bass. A set will cost around 90 quid. (Unless you want to play Rockabilly/slap style, in which case there are specialist strings for this.) Again, the Stagg thread will probably come to your aid here. think there are issues about some manufacturers strings not fitting the Stagg, see the thread for details.
18. Hi Jenny, I agree with Marc S. If you want a budget EUB then have a look at the Stagg (there's a huge thread about these - loads of Basschatters love them) or the Harley Benton EUB on Thomman. (Either way, prepare to invest another 100 quid or so swapping the stock strings for decent ones.) I've got myself a third hand Harley Benton for not very much money from this forum, and it's great fun. I have now hired a 'proper' acoustic upright too. The Harley Benton is easier to play (and a lot easier to gig with!). The scale length is a little less than a 3/4 acoustic and I don't know whether it is the action, or whether mine happens to have lower tension strings, but I find it easier on my fingers. Warning: Once you start down the road of playing upright you'll get addicted and it will empty your bank account! Good luck, David.
19. Inanely bass for sale on gumtree Presumably an Ibanez. Damn you autocorrect!
20. Always interesting to watch good players - particularly the right hand. He uses his thumb and third finger much more than I do!
21. If you are into blues or bluesy gospel I can recommend the Gospel Blues Train radio show. (If you like the Paul Jones radio 2 show you'll like this...) You can find it on a Christian music website called www.crossrhythms.co.uk/radio - it's on the listen again list. The host is Lins Honeyman. He's a very good blues player/singer/multi-instrumentalist from Perth and very knowledgeable about this music. This week's show is all about blues harmonica. There's a nice Paul Jones/Jack Bruce harmonica/bass duet about six songs in. David.
22. Don't seem to be many double bass tutors in my area. And those that are, are all booked up... Anyone available in Chelt/Glos/Tewkesbury/Stroud/Cirencester/north Swindon? I know there are some great tutors in Bristol, but it's a lot of traffic to battle through... Please PM me... Thanks, David
23. Never seen one of these before. https://www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instrument/fender-squier-katana-bass-guitar-vintage-and-rare-made-in-japan-cheap-quick-sale-/1138271621 Someone is asking 200 quid for it, near Birmingham.
24. I 100% agree with Fatback's post above. If you are prepared to make a serious commitment to practice then get your self an EUB and a bow. If money is tight you could start with a cheap and cheerful Harley Benton EUB (there is currently one on Ebay with a starting price of 100 quid). I can fit mine in the back of a Fiat Panda. If you are prepared to spend then the Yamaha SBs have a great reputation. Or if you want a compact acoustic DB, and you are prepared to spend, you could try the David Gage 'Czech Ease' one that Marc S has up for sale on the EUB forum (I'm not on commission). Go for it, it's great fun!
