So, my tort plate just arrived - and I had to fit it immediately! 😀 😃 I grew to like the anodised gold plate, but Tort is still my preference, especially on Fiesta Red Perfect fit (well, one screw is just a tad out). Got it from "Musiclily" on eBay, about £11. Not bad value imo I think the bass sounds even better now 😉

Sale Pending. VERY RARE! 1980's Yamaha BX-1 headless bass - *SOLD*
Marc S replied to Marc S's topic in Basses For Sale
Just a heads-up on this bass. A pal of mine owns a rare guitar shop in Cardiff, and he has told me he'd be happy to take this bass in - to sell, for commission (obviously, that's how he's in business) Anyhow, I'm mentioning this here, as it will be more expensive in the shop. So grab it now.... or pay more -
( Unexpected) NBD: Hohner The Jack- a schoolboy crush
Marc S replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Bass Guitars
I've only recently become a fan of headless basses, and that looks a great instrument. Have you weighed it by any chance @Old Horse Murphy? My digital scales have a strap attachment, which I wrap that around the base of the headstock.... but that would be rather difficult with one of these! lol -

I played several gigs with my acoustic upright on a stand - so I could quickly switch to bass guitar. Even though I often play EUB (which of course is permanently on a stand) it felt very different. Playing an acoustic upright on a stand was much more "awkward feeling" and I couldn't get myself in a comfortable position. @NickA's point about "wrapping yourself around the bass" is quite right, IMHO. Somehow I felt less "connected" with the bass when I played it on a stand. Someone once said to me, that you need to almost dance with your bass Of course, if needs be - then you just have to learn to get on with it. I know at the handful of gigs I did this, I would have struggled for space and avoiding accidents, if I'd not kept the bass on a stand. Nowadays, I just play my EUB on such gigs. I would say though, that you should also practice with your bass off the stand, as well as on it. I'd also be careful about your posture - you may be causing issues for yourself in future. It would be interesting to hear what other Upright players think on these issues...

metaphorically, what does your bass sound like?

With me playing - it's like a join the dots picture, completed by someone with numeracy dyslexia -
Further to discussions about neck width & chunkiness, which really is a discussion about mass and sustain (I think). Here's an interesting video about the "mass" of a guitar body and sustain - apologies if you noted that I posted a link to this before But I think it's a really interesting experiment, and an entertaining video if nothing else Of course, it's a guitar not a bass, and this concentrates on the body and not the neck - but I think such factors as weight of wood, mass etc are all linked - unless I'm missing something? Anyhow - enjoy... but DON'T try this on your vintage Fender!

I was never quite sure whether a chunkier neck would add anything - but in the absence of any other "evidence" I'm thinking there must be something in it. @bassbiscuitsI once owned a 1970's Fender P. It too sounded great - but the neck was even chunkier on that. It was deeper front-to-back as well as wide. That also weighed a tonne. If the young me felt that - I probably wouldn't be able to even pick it up now lol

I'll double check when I get home @Aidan63 - but I think it's a single piece. (In fact, I'm pretty sure it is). Perhaps that's part of the reason for its' superb sound? In all honesty, I was never quite convinced that a few mm wider neck would make a difference - but of course, I'm happy to be proven wrong. perhaps it's a combination of slightly wider and slightly deeper neck, and the fact that it's a single piece of wood? Who knows? I will (in a couple of weeks) try to temporarily swap necks - as I'm interested in seeing what happens. In all honesty, I don't "need" to keep my Squier CV Precision (I've got too many basses, and too many of them are basically Precisions)..... but I am so tempted to do so as the CV looks almost as cool as this one

After playing this fab new bass pretty much most of yesterday afternoon (and much of the evening, to the dismay of Mrs S) I thought I'd add some thoughts on the bass here. EDIT: I even picked this bass up this morning, before breakfast & heading out to work! The neck is indeed, a tad wider than I'd normally prefer. It's a shade wider and slightly deeper than my Squier early CV Precision (which I also love to bits). However, I have been getting used to this. I do sometimes wonder whether bigger necked basses might be a problem, if I ever suffer with arthritis. Of course, I hope I never suffer from this. I did used to get some aching in my left hand a while back. But this may have been down to my bad technique on an upright bass with a really chunky neck? Or perhaps it was due to bad posture / use of a computer mouse? Who knows, and hopefully that won't return. On with the positive factors re this bass. It's absolutely amazing, in terms of build quality. Though the neck is chunky(ish) the finish feels absolutely silky smooth. Of course I love the colour and look of the bass. But the sound is something else. It's snappy and punchy, but also the lows are really deep and rich sounding. More so than any other Precision I've played or owned - and that has been quite a few! Indeed, this one is better even than my old Roadworn Precision, which I always wished had been Fiesta Red and not sunburst (no problem with SB Precisions - I just wanted that one to be this colour lol). It's better than the nice Oly White US one I owned some years back, heck it's better than my old JV or the CV I still have (may sound controversial to some - but that's just how it seems to me). I am blown away at just how deep and rich those low notes are and how the mids and top end sounds are so full of "bite". I can't wait for Thursday nights' full band rehearsal I'm just wondering whether it's the fact that the neck on this bass is a tad chunkier that is helping produce this lovely sound? I'm sure there will be BC'ers who agree, and those who disagree with this thought. I'm even thinking of doing a temporary neck-swap with my CV - Just to see what happens. Maybe it's the solid maple neck that's contributing to the sound? But again, I've owned maple necked & fretboard basses before, and haven't particularly noticed that much difference. I've now ordered a red-Tort plate for it. I've grown used to the gold plate on this bass, but I just know I'm going to prefer a Tort one - not everyone's choice, but an absolute classic IMO Currently in work, and wishing the hours away until I can get home and pick up this bass the minute I get through the door

It is indeed your old bass @woolf I swore I'd keep it forever. I unexpectedly liked the colour even more than I thought I would - its even nicer in the flesh, and I think better with the tort guard I put on it.... I may well withdraw it yet - as I'll be torn if it sells. I bought another P bass today, which is also a killer bass. In honesty I shouldn't keep both, especially as my main gigging BG is yet another Precision (well a PJ Fender Lyte) but you know how it is..... If I bought back all the basses I regretted selling, I'd be divorced by now lol

Great D.I. pedal, with super pre-amp tone controls. Added optional distortion, which is very flexible. Mint condition, boxed, with booklet and no velcro on the back. Can be powered by 9v battery or power supply (not inc). A superb pre-amp on this one... but I'm no longer using it as I like the flexible tonal options on my Markbass EVO1 head that I bought since buying this - hence its no longer being used. Collect from North Cardiff, or I can post for cost. (I'd prefer to insure).

You don't see these come up for sale very often. The Mel9 pedal adds Orchestral sound effects. Works best with the effects output into a separate amp, with bass or guitar output from the "dry" channel. Although you get a good mixed signal output anyway. Mint condition with leaflet, box & power supply. No trades (unless you have a TC hall of fame 2). Collect from Cardiff, or I can post at cost. (I'd prefer to post with insurance).

Just bought a P bass from Simon. We met in the obligatory motorway service station - perhaps BC members are ideally placed to compile a "best service stations in the uk" guide? Lol Anyhow, the bass is exactly as Simon described. Comms throughout were great, and he put the bass on hold for me when I requested. Thoroughly decent BC member and we had a pleasant chat too. Buy, sell, trade in confidence folks

I definitely didn't need another bass - let alone another P bass. But this came up for sale on here, and I decided to go for it. These top-notch basses were made in Mexico, alongside the Roadworn series. I once owned a RW P-bass, and always wished it was this colour - fiesta red 😀 after owning a Squier CV in this colour, it became my favourite. Anyhow, just playing it now - it's super build quality and feels and sounds lovely. The neck is a tad wider than I'm used to, but fairly shallow front-to-back and I'm finding it pretty comfy to play. I may swap the pickguard for a red-tort one - as that would be my fave colour combo.

Price drop to £410 if bought with brand new roundwounds (i can use the TI Flats elsewhere). Not sure how I feel about selling this one. I have absolutely loved playing this bass - it has probably been my favourite P bass ever. But I've just bought another P, in my favourite fiesta red colour, and it's also a killer bass. This is one of the first run of Chinese-made Classic Vibe basses (2008 or 2009, I think). It is astounding build quality, very comfortable to play, and sounds lovely. There are YouTube videos out there, where they are compared in blindfold tests, to US custom shop models, and the players can't tell which is which. This one is in great condition with one small dent in the paintwork, on the upper edge of the body, a few small swirls here & there, plus a slight witness-mark where the ashtray cover sits (I'll photograph that later, if anyone needs a pic). Collection from Cardiff, and price is firm - I need to recoup some cash, and I'm only selling very reluctantly. I may well withdraw if my Yamaha BX-1 sells, or decide to keep it at a band-mates studio.... if I ask him very very nicely. The neck is typical P bass (it's 42mm at the nut), but it's quite shallow front-to-back - I'm pretty sure it is C-shape / profile. The neck feels incredible- comfortable to play, and the fretboard is a lovely rich, dark rosewood. Weight is 4kg. I can let you take it away in an old, tatty-ish gigbag for protection. Currently Fitted with TI Flats - I may swap these onto another bass. EDIT: I'm happy to put rounds on it if the buyer prefers No trades - I have too much "stuff" and need to clear some space. EDIT: forgot to mention, I have the original white pickguard for this bass, which I will include.

For sale only (no trades) I recently bought this rather nice, unusual and rare Japanese built Headless bass from @Burns-bass on this forum. I like it a lot, but I've just bought another bass, and I'm sticking to my "one in, one out" rule as I promised Mrs_S on pain of death that I would! Lol It's superb quality as you'd expect from Japan in the 1980's (its 1986, I think?) In great condition with one chip in the paint on the top back edge, about 3mm diameter. Great "thump" sound, fitted with Fender flatwound strings. It came fitted with a set, but I fitted some brand new ones, and I've become a fan of these strings. Set up with a fairly low action. It plays nicely. It has a narrow and shallow neck which is very comfortable to play. It's very light - a shade under 3.5kg if my memory serves me. Also comes with its own Yamaha Hard case made for this model. The case is also in great condition. Collection from Cardiff (or I may travel a bit). Would prefer not to post. Price is firm - this is what I paid for it.... plus you get the new strings. These are pretty scarce in the UK - so grab it before my other stuff sells and I change my mind.

I rarely play a 5 string, but I like to keep one for noodling on. My only 5'er is an Ibanez SR505. It's great, and lighter than many 4 strings, at 3.5kg. I chose it not just for its light weight - I like the neck width too. It's fairly narrow at the nut. It's fairly narrow at the bridge too, but not too narrow (I have played 5ers with string spacing that's too tight for my right hand fingers) plus, you can adjust the spacing too. I'm not sure if production of these has now stopped? But they were well shy of your budget - I had previously seen them second-hand for around £250 - 280. They're really well made, with nice quality components too, punching above their price bracket IMHO.
