Who's finally happy with their rig?
Marc S replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in General Discussion
I was happy enough with my flexible rig - a few different cabs for different bands / venues, with a MarkBass EVO1 dual channel head. Then I opted to get a small, lightweight head, for when I didn't need 2 channels (and to try something different) So I opted for a Peavey MiniMax 600 head - OMG! It sounds superb, but it has really made a difference to the low end frequencies. They just seem more clear and punchy, and moreover, I can get a decent upright sound with the head too. I bought it just before the prices went up, and I think it was a bargain. I still like the MarkBass head, especially as the 2 separate channels allow for 2 very different EQ settings, but I now prefer the Peavey head wherever, and with which ever band I'm playing with, Upright or BG. EDIT - and with whichever cab or cab combination I use it with. -

Do you find your playing limited by your tastes?
Marc S replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
Definitely not. I'm only a hobbyist too - but my range of listening tastes is quite wide and varied. I'm also in several bands, each of which (apart from one) is quite different to each other - so I'm playing several genres too, and with quite different musicians. I also play upright as well as bass guitar - and that requires quite different discipline and approach, let alone the different styles of upright playing I need to do.... The downside if all this, is that I'm busy learning songs, but don't get enough time to truly "learn" as much as I'd like, because I've got a rehearsal with band A, followed by a rehearsal with band B, for a gig with each this weekend, while I need to learn some stuff sent to me by band C for a gig next week..... and I'd really like to nail those songs, and perhaps work on what I could play that's a bit "different", and work on some theory & technique. Of course, I also need to work in the meantime etc etc But I wouldn't change it, it's my hobby and I enjoy it all EDIT: I meant to add / underline that it's time, and not taste that limits my playing, or at least my ability to improve -
Yes indeed - rather naff, and a bit tacky .... so why do I now desperately want one? lol

And I have to admit.... I've drunk a bit too much of your Bourbon! 😉

Hello Simon, Are you sometimes struggling with hitting the right notes because of "stretching issues" with your fretting hand? Have you tried a short scale bass? Would that possibly help. As others have mentioned, I can sometimes lose a bit of accuracy when doing BV's - so I simplify playing when singing sometimes. It depends on the song though - sometimes I'm fine on bass while doing BV's... Just the other week, I went to see one of my fave bands. The Undertones- Derry's finest. They always bring the 19 year old in me back out. Don't know if you're based anywhere near them? But if you get the chance to see them... go for it. Great bunch of NI lads, and the nicest guys. Welcome to BC, from South Wales 😀

Hi @Homatron That midi controller build sounds ambitious, adventurous and interesting! Nice basses you have there - great to hear your wife bought one of them for you too... that gives the bass something extra special. You describe yourself as a "mediocre bassist", but if you're enjoying yourself, there's no such thing as mediocre. Welcome to BC. Hope to hear more from you. 😀

Attempting the best bassline played by Maggie Philbin ...
Marc S replied to vantagepointrocks's topic in General Discussion
OMG - I recall this going out on TV at the time, but had forgotten about it until now. I remember watching Swap Shop all too well.... and thinking it was the best thing since Double Deckers! Lol. Also, used to quite fancy Maggie Philbin - all too predictably -
I am now a veteran here on BassChat. Does that just mean I'm old? 😉 😀

Enjoy it while you can, Marc, as you still have something you can aspire to. Once you have achieved the dizzy heights of Grandmaster there is nothing else ahead. Just an incentive-free vacuum. You can't be demoted so you might as well be grumpy and rude to everyone, like I am, without fear of repercussions.

DROP: This is now £175, if gone by Saturday - If it's still here, I may donate it to someone I know who has set up his own guitar & bass school. Just adding a possible trade - I'm potentially seeking a Fretless Jazz neck (Fender / Squier fit), or maybe a fretless bass - cash added for the right one. You don't see many of these around, as I gather they weren't in production for long. 1980's Cort headless bass, with Steinberger licensed bridge & nut. Features my own home made strap extension, using a metal bracket and wood added upper horn - as I couldn't reach the end of the neck comfortably before. This bass is fitted with passive EMG pickups, which are absolutely thunderous! It's louder than either of my active basses, and these pickups sound awesome. Not sure it was originally fitted with EMGs, and have seen no mention of this. I had the frets levelled a while back by a Luther near Cardiff, and the bass plays nicely. However, the action is a tad on the high side IMHO. This hasn't bothered me too much, as I tended to play it quite hard, in the band I mainly used it for. Ideal as a backup / spare as its so compact & light (around 3kg I think). It has a few scuffs & scrapes, and has definitely been gigged. Comes with nicely padded gigbag. I'm only selling as my backup is now a short scale headless Ibanez - so I'm not using this anymore. Collection from Cardiff preferred. I don't have a box / packaging. No trades (other than fretless Jazz neck) - I'm having a clear out. The skulls are easily removable stickers - I used in on a couple of Halloween gigs.

It's stereo 2.5w + 2 5w But it's louder than that sounds, so to speak. I've played in folk jam sessions with it, in a pub, along with 4 or 5 guitarists, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, plus a drummer (using brushes) and it more than coped... Edit: I've played alongside louder musicians who beat hell out of some makeshift drums - but it could still be heard, when placed in a shop doorway. I also played it on a beach in West Wales, and it was fine even there. Probably not good for metal though! Lol. It seems a shame that they've discontinued these, as it fills a gap in the market.

NOW £115. Plus, I'm after a Fender-fit fretless neck (Pref Jazz dimensions, and lined - but WHYG?). Or possibly a Fretless bass, with cash added for the right one. These are Cracking little micro bass amps, and are now discontinued, sadly. Can be powered by mains, or 6 x AA's - so you can get spare batteries anywhere. This one is in great condition. Great as a small practice amp around the house - it even has a headphone socket. Also good for busking too, which I've done a few times. It has a carry handle attached. What's really nice about these, is they have 8x sound presets, bass, middle & treble EQ, plus gain. But the effects feature really nice chorus, flanger & reverb. Even better, there's a built in drum / rhythm machine with 11 preset styles. I'd much prefer not to post, if possible - so collection from Cardiff preferred, or could possibly meet, if I happen to be on my travels. No trades thanks - the clear out continues....

Saw the Rezillos and The Undertones last night. Both bands were great, the Undertones particularly so 😀
