1. I just wear marigolds. Yes, it completely destroys my technique but it's worth it. Crusty jugglers...
2. Brilliant. I love watching your builds. I learn so much.
3. I have a similar thing with Wooten. Incredible technique and deep knowledge of music theory but all I hear is lift music. Or, if any of you ever played a game called "Transport Tycoon".... And, musically, I'm not a complete "just keep it simple" kind of person either. I LOVE Squarepusher. Tom might even be my favourite bassist, so I'm not averse to rapid-fire, technical mumbo jumbo, but Wooten, Bailey, Hamm and some others just sound unbearably cheesy to me. also, I'm not a fan of Jaco
4.
dont think ive ever seen an SR506 (or any SR500 range) with a maple neck, my SR500 have the rosewood fret board. yours looks pretty sweet
Yeah, it was hard to get. They weren't made in huge numbers and Ibanez didn't make them available in Europe. I think it looks so much nicer than the rosewood and (I didn't mention this on any other post about it) because I think the fretboard-as-tonewood thing is nonsense, I wanted the much-more-sustainable maple.
5. Over the years, I've tried different ones and, like you, forgotten what set I was currently using. A quick overview of me and my strings: I don't replace them very often. I'm not in a band so I probably put on a new set every year or 9 months or so. I do like the sound of new strings (and I always go roundwound with the exception of some Fender nylon tapewounds I put on my acoustic...which I liked) but I'm not so into the sound that I replace strings the minute they lose that new sparkle. I've tried Rotosounds, D'addario, Pyramid, Fender, DR and Foderas ..and my sr506 came with Elixirs, which felt crap to me for some reason. Maybe they make cheap ones to put on new basses as a marketing thing. The first ones to actually wow me were the Fodera nickels. They felt so good and sounded great and, although the new string sparkle faded after a week (as it always does) they maintained a fresh sound for longer than any other string I've used. I'm currently using D'Addarios because I bought a couple of different packs to experiment and they're almost as good, but I'm going back to Fodera next. I think that's my string. I also put some DR high beams on my fretless and they sound, and feel, fantastic. I've been lucky recently. Before these, I had D'a "super brights" on the fretless and that was a mistake. Not the right sound for a fretless.
6.
I voted a couple of days ago but have listened to them all several times since. After gorging myself on noodles I’m still hungry for more and looking forward to what’s going to be served up next month.
Probably more noodles but, judging by previous comments, with a side helping of s**t.
7.
Voted. All nice pieces. I was quite surprised how similar some were though in terms of arpeggio acoustic guitar styley. There must be a shared consciousness connecting some bass players. I will enter next time, judging by my playing at rehearsal the other night (first time I've touched a bass in a month) it will be sh*t!
I noticed the similarity too (I'm one of those noodlers) and it's interesting. Speaking only for myself, that tends to be how my bass noodling goes because I'm not in a band. I make music myself and, if I've put something together in Ableton, my basslines tend to be very simple, but that's not the kind of thing I'd bother playing when I'm just sitting with my bass in silence. So unless somebody wants to hear me playing whole notes, I suspect my Noodle-comp submissions will be along these lines
8.
... need to make sure mine is louder next month, I seem to be at about half the volume of everyone else
same! I'm so crap at the mixing and mastering stuff.
9. Here's a playlist for the 11 that are on SoundCloud NOODLECOMP and, by the way, for those who are interested in this kind of thing, can I just take this opportunity to strongly recommend Hakubaku organic Udon noodles.
10.
Nice stuff. loving the melody

That's just lovely mate, very dreamy

Somehow missed this one! Loved it though. Great chord choices
Thanks very much!
11. I did one https://soundcloud.com/alittlebitrobot/noodle-01 not very bassy, though...
12. somebody buy this! I've had mine for nearly 10 years now and I love it. They're so well made. I replaced the electronics in mine last year with a passive loom from Ki0gon and it's the business. Perfect. GLWTS and, incidentally, the body is Bubinga. In my case, one solid piece, but I can't tell for sure from your photos if that's the case with this one.
13. very jealous of all you SR Premium people, but I love my sr506M Here it is on the day I got it about two years ago [sharedmedia=core:attachments:145962] I'd love an ATK too. Yours looks amazing DeezerButler.
14. Well, I think if I said "no", then I'd be committing to posting regularly until the day I die. So, yeah, I probably will go quiet at some point, but I'm such a lurker anyway it'll go unnoticed.
15.
Looks like your hopes have been answered....
haha! Amazing!
16.
I just watched every video, read every article, scoured every forum in existence...
oh, great, I've done that too
17. brilliant! Thanks for the explanation. The first time you tried fretting, did you balls it up monumentally or is it easier than it seems?
18. I don't like any of these songs, but I'm not happy about my musical taste lining up (if only briefly) with someone being such an arsehole about it. This really is lose-lose.
19. To answer the original question, I think the youngest bass players that have inspired me are Leonard Hubbard, Tom Jenkinson and Stephen "Thundercat" Bruner. But, just on the generational point.. I listen to some music from the 30s (early Jazz stuff) along with music written much longer ago ("classical music" and "traditional Irish music" will do as umbrella terms for now). So, taking the Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five record from 1925, that's exactly 60 years before I was born. That's the equivalent of somebody born in 2000, listening to music from 1940, which still effectively pre-dates the electric bass. So, I think every great player just joins a pantheon of great bassists, rather than replacing the older ones.
20.
To be honest, my process is pretty much 'make it up as I go along'.
well, it's VERY effective! I can't see any screws, though. Do these just sit on top with friction after you've set the pickup height?
21. Wow, this is really coming together. Mind if I ask about your process for pickup covers?
22. I remember mentioning on another site that Jaco just does absolutely nothing for me. I didn't even start a thread like "I find Jaco boring and over-rated. Thoughts?", I just mentioned off-hand that I'm not a fan. .....never again.
23.
...just a pity Ibanez necks are a couple of mm too thin for me. It is tempting though.
Agreed. And I've got one. I thought I'd get used to the thinness but I've had it two years now and it still feels slightly too thin. I like the look of this SC but there's no temptation there for me. .....which is lucky.
24. That's more like it! I usually like singlecuts, but the BTB looked ugly to me. This is nice.
