Many bass cabs have been going to a PA/full-range style driver and design in recent years and many folks like the way they sound. You won't get vintage warmth unless you have an eq or amp voicing getting you there, though. I think a full-range music speaker playing bass guitar should work just fine, as long as you can tame the treble. Older bass cabs don't do recorded music well because the high end wasn't necessary for bass guitar so the designers didn't care about the roll-off.
I get your point about the older bass cabs etc. But i disagree there is no way tiny full range speakers will do the job, the only small speakers that can do bass are the ones in phil jones stuff and there designed for bass. And full range speakers can do bass but not better than an actual single purpose bass speaker. There is always a trade off. So my view still stands i bet if you put a five string through that the speakers will turn inside out. Ive not found one demo of the product and its frequency response is 60hz - 20khz while that does not paint the whole picture it suggests to me its will struggle to produce correct bass tone.

Here is mine a Vintage pre wilkinson i named Laura. This was the explanation of the name from my very first basschat introduction post. "Bought a cheap 15 quid pre wilkinson Vintage from a mate. That had done the rounds between friends, wasn't in the best of condition and was filthy, so i named it after a girlfriend it reminded me of haha." Added the cool speed strips myself.

I think its sounds ok but replace "we r" with "we are" and take away the but before it. Just reads cleaner in my view and but always looks negative. Also the next sentence that starts off Looking doesn't look right. Maybe start of a new paragraph with that.

Ive complained about slapping in demos before but now if its done in conjunction with proper playing and in a sensible manner i can see why people who slap would want to know how that sounds. I do hate it when the recording is of crap quality though, if your going to demo something be it as a manufacture or just someone in the bedroom invest in some decent recording gear and learn how to use it. I could even forgive crap playing as long as the crap playing comes through crystal clear haha.
I think you can just disconnect the tweeter in the 121p and wire the driver directly, I would do that (or swap it for a better one) as it's probably the ghastly little LeSon one they put in the other "p" cabs so no crossover. Does the 121 have the tweeter control knob?
Yeah i could just disconnect (no tweeter control). I think im gonna have to hunt down a place where i can try them both.

I like the idea of this. But it looks a bit too much like a ipod dock combined with a 90s ghetto blaster. The wood (pine) fronted one looks like furniture from the 90s too. Its also 400 pound to expensive. Also im thinking bass speakers never ever play music well such as there designed frequency range. So its either going to be crap at bass, or crap at playing music through or both even. If it had dedicated bass speakers and another two full range drivers for music streaming that would make more sense.

Norms rare Guitars, a look at some of his vintage Fender basses
Twincam replied to Rick's Fine '52's topic in Bass Guitars
Now sitting in my rack, and it is indeed awesome!
I'm resisting the jealousy not very well however haha. -
Thinking of getting either one of these. Both fit my purpose, both are portable and i like the reviews of both. Im not a fan of tweeters in bass cabs, and the fact ive seen lots of people complain of the hissing from the 121p combo puts me off slightly. I am leaning towards the players school combo as its cheaper, but the fact its cheaper despite me liking the reviews is making me think i will of somehow bought an inferior product.
I've put some relief back in the neck; it's slightly less than business card thickness at the 8th fret but it's still more than I had before I straightened it out, so I guess I didn't have enough in the first place. My issue now is that my saddles are as low as they'll go on the E and G strings, but they are still quite high, and the intonation seems to be out in the middle of the neck. I guess now it's a three-way trade off between relief, string height and angle of the neck get it playing as well as it can.
If you now have correct relief but the string height is still high and the bridge saddle are maxed out and won't go any lower then take off the neck and put a shim in the neck pocket. Cut a small piece of business card off then place it in the neck pocket right at the back. Put the neck back on. This will lower the action. Ive just done this to another peavey Oh and i know you have resolved the buzzing now but in your first post if ever you have buzz with a fretted note its never the nut slot as fretting a note takes that out the equation. Having said that you can get back buzz but its rare and your strings would have to be resting right on the frets from nut to fretted note. You can check for a low nut by fretting at the 3rd fret there should be a paper thin gap at the first fret to string.
Considering the guy was showing us a quick snapsot of some of the different early Fender Basses in the collection, what would you expect? He showed us the different evolutionary models of P bass, including a possible one-off custom colour '58, with matching headstock. Same with J's, rare stack knob and some great custom colour examples shown. Would be nice to have an extended verion of the vid, showing them being played, and comparing the tones etc, but I thought it was a nice little watch. Considering that Fender only made 2 pre-CBS basses (I wont include the bass vi for purposes of this discussion), a Jazz and Precision, what else could he show you, other than fine examples of rare models, which he did. There is a whole series of other video's showing other stuff they have, and newer bits, hollow bodies, solid bodies etc. I respect your opinion, just curious as to what you would have liked him to show?
Oh don't get me wrong i loved seeing the basses, and i liked the vid. And i know he was showing fender basses. Just i thought it got a little boring,to me. Some of the basses were the same just a different/rare colour which is cool. Would of loved to hear there different tones, or maybe more in depth info like how neck dimensions changed. I know its only a short vid. Now im looking like im calling fenders boring or something im not at all. Just would of been cool if he pulled out a few other basses. Telecaster bass the one with the humbucker near the neck, Isn't there some horrid fender bass V thing with mustang pickups, And talking of which a old mustang bass (my fav) would be cool to see. Just to mix it up from the normal p's and j's. Oh and to add that stack knob jazz is awesome and my fav in the vid. -

Cool and i like/love fender basses... But found it a bit boring just pulling out the same old fender p's and jazz basses. The same basses over and over again really. -
Ive just give the pics a good look over. Wtf is going on here, i can't even imagine trying to put the thing right in any way.

Great series. Really makes my inner geek happy.

Anybody fancy trying out a new musical instrument this year?
I tried replacing the speaker in a Roland CB100 with a Celestion Neo some time back. It sounded - not to good.
Yeah Roland bass cubes use some sort of ffp forward feed processing system where a sensor reads the speaker movement, compares it to the original signal and adjusts speaker output or something like that, the whole system is monitored. So replacing the speaker would very likely mess with the whole thing.

Don't sound good solo/clean (now with recording)
Twincam replied to Twincam's topic in General Discussion
Here is a quick recording of what i mean, its recorded with a potato so not great at all, but you can here all the noise that's coming through the amp. Oddly enough now its been converted etc etc the noise is less on the original you can here that string noise more prominent its like 25% of whats coming through the amp. http://youtu.be/rtN-izGa6po -
Don't sound good solo/clean (now with recording)
Twincam replied to Twincam's topic in General Discussion
Ok so just been practicing and had a real listen at myself and whats coming through more than anything is my hands shifting position, seems i catch just lightly some strings, but also after fretting and shifting my fingers i slightly slide my fingers coming off the string. Slow playing i sound ok even medium tempo i sound ok. The quicker i have to shift about the more noise i generate. I have just came back to playing rounds so im maybe more sensitive to this. Im not to bothered about some clanks and fret buzz or even a little overtones (although overtones im sensitive too) i rarely get any buzzing anyhow. Just that amount of noise im generating ive never heard anyone sound that bad. A simple example would be if i play a 7/6 arpeggio in G since i have small hands im forced to move up and down with my hand ever so slightly where others can stay in one spot. Im going to try lifting off cleaner and i think im going back to flatwounds, actually gonna put some tapewounds on there. Me and rounds don't mix. -
Long way off for me but im thinking by the end of the year (November) something Markbass, and maybe an Ibanez SR one of the premium models that's a fair whack of cash all at once for me. But definitely upgrading amp wise this year. The only problem with also getting a new bass this year is my laptop is now old and slow. Keep looking at Markbass stuff and i so want right now!.
Just to broaden out the discussion a bit. I do find it hard to understand why bassists are seemingly obsessed with "low action", or plays like butter etc. I can understand guitarists thinking this way with the thinness of the strings they play, but bass is a bigger instrument which, lets face it is physically harder to play but which still demands that good tone is produced The idea that you can set up a bass to play "easy" like a guitar is wrong. Bass guitars are almost mini double basses which are not easy at all, at least not to start with. Hence the best tone is achieved like a double bass with a high action which allows the strings to really get moving Apparently Jamersons P had immense high action just like a DB, but boy did he get a great tone, but then Geddy Lees J has amost no action at all and to me it just sounds clanky and grindy which I know appeals to some but it does'nt really sound like a good solid bass tone to me. I shall now retire to my nuclear shelter....
Having tried all sorts of setups i agree with this partially, but i think there's definitely setups that allow for easier playing while still getting a good tone.

Not really sure exactly what im looking for out of this thread. But im a little frustrated as i sound pretty good playing with effects, or in any sort of mix (with or without effects), and even with the washing machine on ive noticed i sound better. Playing solo with no effects i don't sound half as good. And i can hear all the little mistakes and overtones. Ive always wanted to sound good clean, ive always wanted to be a James Jamerson if you like. Clearly im not. Should i work on this or just use what im good at. As at the min im fighting against my natural style my ears want clean bass my hands want something different. I will admit im a little lost at what i should be doing. At this point im better and learning faster at working on basses than i am playing them.
Convert it to a 2-string, replace the pickup with a cheap Jazz unit jammed into the cavity at an angle, and put it on eBay for £269 as suitable for people with fat fingers. Don't forget to drop a hint about the possibility of it being an early Fender prototype!
Hahahahaha . I have a "hot rail" pickup just right for the job.

Think i will start using mineral oil, which is the same as lemon oil but unscented and cheaper.

The Conan original films have great soundtracks sound great when a full orchestra is belting out the anvil of Crom. Crom!.....

A Jack Russell pissed through the grill onto the speaker. Speaker is a paper type. Will a damp cloth be alright im guessing piss and water isn't the best thing for paper speakers. I assume any solvent based things are also a no no. I am not amused!.

Hahahaha. Im never ever going to look at a music master or mustang again without that image coming up. What can not be unseen!.
